SDP, an business idea.
SDP stands for Subscribe, Download, Play.

It would be some kind of game library not unlike steam.
The difference would be instead of P&P (Pay and Play) as steam, it would be S&P (Subscribe & Play) like spotify.

If you pay the subscription fee you can then access to any game that is included in the library for no additional cost and as long as you pay the fee you can continue to play the game.

I'd be curious how much of a monthly fee you'd need to charge to cover the (presumably exorbitant) licensing fees publishers will want from you.

Not a bad idea but it would take some pretty deep pockets to change the way the video game industry basically monetizes its products. Also how do you handle cash grab DLCs and pre-orders? I.e. the new business model for AAA titles. They'd be sort of eliminated wouldn't they? I'd certainly resent paying a monthly fee plus additional one time costs to "unlock" additional content.

No Mass Effect? No Dragon Age? No Civilization? No Elder Scrolls? No XCOM? That's a crappy deal :( Yes, I know that EA doesn't have Civ, XCOM, TES rights. Not my problem. Still makes it a crappy deal.

The idea is interesting, OP, but it would have to have some top tier games for me to be interested.

Wouldn't work, a lot of games on steam do not have any sort of extra DRM - you can install them and play whenever you want, even if you're not online or connected to steam. I don't know if you'd be able to convince some companies to add extra DRM so that your model could work. I suppose you could stick to some companies only, but like already said, the monthly fees would be too damn high.

Back in the day I'm sure Steam could have done this model if they'd wanted to. Difficult modern startup though. Now that we're up to 50GB installations for games I don't see how it could work. Its going to take a new super broadband and games designed to be streamed to make something like this work.

What you are looking for is PlayStation Now. Twenty bucks a month to stream your choice of some top end PS3 games.

Not bad, not bad. But there is only one small problem. I am a member of PC Gaming Master Race, you dirty console peasant. ;)

Is your TV? The capability to play streaming game via this service is built into TVs being sold by Sony right now and will be included in future TVs sold by other companies soon.

At least that's what Sony hopes. Lord knows that 3D TVs and 4K TVs haven't taken off in the manner they expected.

Alternatively you could just quit bellyaching about game machines are more innovative than your stodgy tower and join the twenty first century.
