Here we go again...

I propose Alphabet, it will allow us to trade for the other techs. It also has some beakers invested in it already if I recall correctly.

Alphabet isn't much of a tie-breaker but how far off from disocvering a religion are we now theoretically? Is it within reach, without trading?

Well, Caesar is Buddhist. And someone has researched Hinduism. Nobody, I mean no nation, has reached Judaism, but it will take us 34 turns to reach that. Or 53 turns for Code of Laws and Confucianism. Alphabet will take 23 turns. Then we should be able to trade for those early religion techs and cut down how long it takes for CoL or Taoism. It might be a little faster to beeline for CoL right now, but I think we would be able to get other techs we missed by going the Alphabet route. Also, trading techs should help us gain friends in this aggressive land mass.

I made a point before writing for taking the religious path and grabbing CoL via the Oracle. Majority said it was better to try trading. I still don't think this is the best way, but it's the way it was done. Now, it's better going on with it than going down again... So, Alpha it is!

I don’t believe we ever voted on whether we should research Alphabet after writing, but I agree it looks like Alpha is the consensus choice.

A couple of points: I think we can still be first to COL if we research Alphabet before we head down the Mysticism path; but successfully building the Oracle is probably a nonstarter. If we’re going to try for the Oracle at the least we need to decide which city will build it and pre-chop a bunch of forests. I doubt if the effort would be worth it.

Second, Alphabet allows us to trade technologies but it also allows other Civs to ask us to donate our hard-earned knowledge to them out of “friendship.” We need to start thinking about how we’re going to handle any such demands. Because we’re so puny at the moment (I believe we’re last, or close to it, on the Power Chart), not agreeing to such demands may be dangerous. We may want to start building military soon if we don’t want to be pushed around diplomatically by the AI.

The AI is totally incapable of launching an attack in this stage of the game. So there isn't much risk in denying at this point in time IMO.

I agree. Typically when there is still unclaimed land the AI will expand, rather than attack. If an AI is hemmed in, than the possibility of attack is there. At least IME.
