Just had my first win on deity, playing as poland

with the 4 cities tall strat i managed to win on turn 299 via diplomatic (i was 5 turns away from launching spaceship)

sejong finished the last part of the spaceship about turn 290, but never launched it. He was in a war (that he was winning). all his cities were connected and fairly close together, i have no idea why he didnt launch. Is it likely it got captured? in the "victory progress" it listed him as finishing all parts required.

Anyhow, it was an epic game. It was essentially peaceful until the era before modern where all hell broke out, my friend neighbours ethiopia and byzantium backstabbed me from the east and west, but i had just made 7 GWB and upgraded to bombers quickly. Constantinople made a nice addition to my empire. I also threw a couple of nukes at ethiopia in the last few turns, while korea warred with siam.

it was the best game iv played, BNW has seemingly made lategame a LOT better. maybe it was just deity but i wasnt sure if i was gonna win till the last turn. However, i am slightly gutted that sejong didnt launch, if it was a bug then its ruined the game for me, if it was something like warfare preventing him launching then thats great i guess

OH, i also had embargoed him about 20 turns prior

any ideas why he didnt launch

The only things that could have happened were if his spaceship parts were captured, or if he never sent them to the capital... At least you won

Does the victory progress screen list space ship parts when they're completed or when they're actually added to the space ship?

Pathing problem? I've seen units that choose to go on like a 17-turn path while waiting a turn to move it could get to the same place in 2 turns.

You said he was at war, were there a bunch of enemy units in his territory? Maybe he never had a chance to safely send it to his capitol. Maybe the city he built it in was surrounded by enemy units.

If you got the notification that he completed the last part, he should have won. Did you just seem it build with a spy? He might have just changed production or lost it i the war.

Any chance you turned off the victory condition? I would assume that would take away the ability to build spaceship parts, though.

Not quite - each spaceship part has to be brought to the capitol too.

One idea, just wild guessing, that popped into my mind - I wonder if the AI is coded never to win science before a certain amount of turns have passed, to give the player a chance or something? Science victory is, after all, the only VC you can't prevent remotely, so it wouldn't be too far-fetched for it to be a special case of sorts. Still very weird, though.

nope victoria condition was definately on, i saw it in the victory progress screen i didnt have a spy there

The units in his city is an option i guess, although he was the tech leader all game and he took a city during the way so i assume he was winning the war. I couldnt see his land when it happened

I don't understand how you can say that it's the best game of Civ you've ever played but its ruined the game for you as well.

You'll probably never know why he didn't/couldn't launch. But if you enjoyed the game then it's shouldn't matter, surely.

sonic it was still fun, i just mean if a bug prevented him from winning when he had fulfilled the necessary conditions then it takes the shine off it for me

we do want to be ABLE to lose, right?

I don't know, I'm fine with losing but "someone finished a spaceship, too bad" is a rather lame way to go. Luckily space victory tends up to kick in only if another victory condition isn't getting picked.

I'm 90% sure that you only get the notification when you actually add the spaceship part to the ship. Try it out - leave a spaceship part for a while after it's finished, and check the victory progress screen. It wont't show until you add it to the spaceship. The only way you can know if a spaceship part is made before it is added is through spies or open borders.

i dont have the save anymore unfortunately

Sejong definately had all the parts built and added as per the victory progress screen.

is there a chance somone dropped a nuke on his city destroying the spaceship the turn before he should have won?

Did you perhaps miss the defeat screen and kept playing out until you won?

If you see something weird like this, it's best to keep a save for it. They can be investigated and the game can be made better. Especially if you're going to make a thread for it on the forums where 'show me or it didn't happen' is a common statement.
