Sellswords

It doesn't really make fiscal sense to drop yourself into an area with limited contracts and like three or four other companies trying to grab them.

Trademaster Jagielka sat in his office, angrily mulling over his situation. Ever since the Imperial Princesses transferred his guardsmen from his offices to their own personal retinues, banditry had doubled. Usually Jagielka would turn to sellswords in this situation, but where were all of the companies that he trusted? Oh right, they were all helping the Princesses increase the size of their play armies by recruiting reluctant farmers! Of course they would be doing easy and risk-free business in the form of forcing hapless peasants to leave their homes instead of taking honest work. Meanwhile, he had to deal with the loss of resources and tax income in this province. The Princesses weren’t going to reflect on their own actions when this became a true problem, instead they would just blame him.

“May the Gods protect me from their wrath…” muttered Jagielka. Of course he would give his treasonous thoughts words and, in truth, he did love the Empire. But his job was extremely stressful and, sometimes, he would face problems he would have no solutions to. Ones that required patience and large amounts of luck. As fate would have it, Jagielka was very lucky that day. His secretary knocked on the door and poked her head in.

“Trademaster,” said the secretary “I have two people waiting outside who are inquiring about the Caravan Guard contract.” Jagielka’s eyes lit up.

“Send them in!” he said enthusiastically. Two people, one man one woman, walked into the office. They were both dressed in ornate white robes, decorated in a series of white and red patterns. Although their robes had hoods, they were not wearing them so Jagielka could see that the man was an elf (or half-elf, he had trouble telling the difference sometimes) and the woman was human. They both had tranquil smiles on their faces, yet their manner was still respectful. These people, whoever they were, certainly presented themselves as professionals.

“Greetings Mr Jagielka,” said the elf “I am Anton Sobol. This is my colleague, Andrea Molska.” The woman, presumably Andrea, gave a quick curtsy. “And we are Sobol Solutions.”

“Providing optimal solutions for clients utilizing best practices of high quality adventurers for competitive prices.” Andrea recited quickly and enthusiastically.

“I thought I recognized your names from somewhere.” Jagielka said. Sobol Solutions were a new company, but they were already known in Polnoc for their eccentric business practices and their limited use of sellswords. It was rumoured that the captain was the only person in the organization (if it even extended beyond him and Andrea) who had combat experience. However, the few clients of theirs that Jagielka knew had called them extremely reliable and were pleased with their results. Although, he wasn’t sure he was comfortable with entrusting the caravan to one person.

“Your reputation is sound,” Jagielka continued “And there hasn’t been any other companies as experienced as you applying for the job. However, I doubt that a single sellsword could adequately defend a caravan of this size. So unfortunately I must reject your application.” Anton continued to smile, seemingly unphased by Jagielka’s rejection.

“Mr Jagielka,” Anton began “There seems to be a misunderstanding about the nature of Sobol Solutions. We do not provide sellswords to our clients, we provide solutions. We have done research into your situation and we have determined that you have a problem.”

“Namely,” Andrea interjected with almost perfect timing “Your guild is responsible for a caravan that must go from Polnoc to Swit without being interrupted or compromised by hostile entities including but not limited to bandits, marbeasts, a variety of wild animals and/or monsters.”

“Sobol Solutions has determined that we can provide an optimal solution.” Anton continued “If you accept our application, I can guarantee that your caravan will arrive in Swit on time and unmolested. If we were not certain that we could provide an optimal solution, then I would not be wasting either of our times. We are so certain of this that we are willing to put our money on the line.”

“If, due to the action or inaction of Sobol Solutions,” Andrea once again interjected “the caravan fails to arrive within 24 hours of the expected arrival time or if it arrives with a significant amount of cargo missing or damaged then the money awarded to Sobol Solutions from the contract will refunded in full. Sobol Solutions is not liable for unforeseen circumstances such as negligence on the part of a third party, weather or other acts of the Gods.”

“Now, what would you prefer to hire Mr Jagielka?” Anton asked “A dozen fallible and mortal sellswords? Or a solution that is guaranteed not only our own word, but also the words of our many satisfied clients?” Jagielka was taken aback by their arguments, for a few moments he silently stared at the pair.

“Mr Sobol, Miss Moslka,” Jagielka began “You two can make a very convincing argument. Let’s get a contract written up.”

(OOC: I plan to write more this turn, but I’m pretty busy so I decided to post what I had and then count anything else as a bonus)

Orders are due in 4 hours. They will still be accepted afterwards, but will automatically lose any competing contact bids.

156 Imperial Age, Sixth Moon, First Quarter

Usually Jagielka would turn to sellswords in this situation, but where were all of the companies that he trusted? Oh right, they were all helping the Princesses increase the size of their play armies by recruiting reluctant farmers! Of course they would be doing easy and risk-free business in the form of forcing hapless peasants to leave their homes instead of taking honest work.
Jagielka (NinjaCow64)

The Crier
‘My dear fans and cursed critics, come now and listen to my exciting news and useless dribble! The Empire is as strong as it ever has been, its seams as frayed as they have ever been!

‘Word from Ziemno speaks of bandits with military grade equipment, no doubt stolen from our fine men and women in His Imperial Majesty’s service, or from the Charkov royal families’ retainers. Speak no foolishness or slander of other possibilities, for only cowards and traitors are critical of the news!

‘In Polud halfling and human bandits pick off elven pilgrims, while Imperial pioneers from Swit poach in Hikar’s forbidden forests. Let us ignore how far off Polud is from lands civilised by humans and halflings, and ignore how highly unprofitable attacking pilgrims is. Mere bandits, and stupid ones at that!

‘And now across the Empire come tales of bandits waging war upon each other! Even sending out contracts to the very mercenaries that have been hunting them!

‘Times are not troubled my friends. They are just as they always were.’

Company Reports
The Baron's Fabulous Knights
Spoiler :
’Barons and Princesses can all go bugger themselves dead. If they think they can steal our little ones for their armies, they’re going to find an army coming to their homes. They may stomp us down now, but tomorrow they’ll burn.
Rybi Ogon peasant, moments before being stomped by Albrecht.

The Baron’s Fabulous Knights undertook two contracts; one clean and simple, the other messy and complicated. Two guesses which one the Baron took care of, and which one the underlings had to deal with. The first job, protecting a trade ship between the capital and Malyport, was more of an uncomfortable cruise. The Baron and his employees ran into no trouble, though the cargo boat had uncomfortable company in what was undoubtedly a corsair shadowing them for most of the voyage. Nothing came of it, and the company was paid for little work.

The rest of the company went off to Rybi Ogon to assist the local Princess in pressing her subjects into her private army. The peasants did not take kindly to their loved ones being taken away, and a mob rushed the recruiters and mercs. The mob was poorly armed, and after a spat of brutal violence, the peasants retreated with their dead.

Borderland Voyageurs
Spoiler :
’Damn horcs, they took our jerbs. Dey terk er jerbs!’
Rownina human merchant, still employed.

The Voyageurs once again took up a contract protecting the ventures of Trader Jolana as she began constructing a permanent office in Rownina. Early on in the construction a guild representatives approached the office with a group of private guards, evidently attempting to threaten Jolana and her workers into shutting down. They found themselves unable to pester anyone, blocked by the half dozen Borderland half-orcs.

The guilds weren’t deterred though, as one night a dozen men of ill-intent set upon the office, wielding swords and axes. The mercenaries abandoned all pretense of avoiding severe violence, taking the initiative as their scouts shot down a number of the thugs. The melee was short and brutal, with the Voyageurs managing to kill most of the thugs and drive the rest off, while the company suffered the loss of one of the new recruits. The construction was eventually completed without further incident, and Jolana was soon enough able to hire her own private guards.

The Companions of the Verivalan

Without pay, the Companions of the Verivalan have disbanded.

The Dirty Dozen
Spoiler :
’Tepjet was certainly an arse, but I didn’t want to see him get eaten by a marwolf. Well, maybe only a little.’
Brodzki.

The Dirty Dozen bid on two caravan contracts, but lost the Long Wind Caravans deal to the Lucid Crow. The company split itself between the single caravan job and exploring the countryside.

The caravan out of Yedi Tepeli met only a slight bump in the road when a handful of human bandits tried to attack in broad daylight. The ragtag highwaymen were beat back quickly, with the mercenary’s only taking minimal wounds.

The scouting party made an incursion into the Marwoods, hunting for a rumoured abandoned bandit camp. The party did find the camp, but also found out why it was abandoned. A pack of marwolves stalked the party, then ambushed them as they searched the camp. The putrid beasts tore apart Tetmajer before the other sellswords even noticed. Under Captain Pepper’s command, the party drew into a close defense, but recruits were not prepared for the savagery of the marbeasts, and Poza and Chapula soon fell. The marwolves were eventually brought to heel, and the party quickly scavenged what they could before fleeing the Marwoods. As they left, Pepper swore he caught sight of a humanoid creature watching through the trees, eyes glowing a muted green.

Higher for Hire
Spoiler :
’Haven’t seen bandits like that before. Can’t place it, but they didn’t seem much like bandits to me. I don’t much like thinking I have soldiers coming after my caravan, when all I have to protect myself are some penny-pinching, cold blooded sellswords…’
Caravan master, Dv’gav.

The main three sellswords of Higher for Hire took a simple contract guarding caravans between Dv’gav and Temho. While they were expecting to run into wild animals or rag tag bandits, they weren’t expecting a well armed and led team of raiders. The ruffians out numbered the mercenaries two to one, and despite being a cut above regular bandits, they certainly weren’t as specialised as the sellswords. After a prolonged and hard fought melee, the raiders backed off, taking care to remove their wounded and dead, though they were forced to leave one corpse behind. The scavenged equipment for the corpse was military grade, though there were no insignia or sigil indicating whether it had been of Imperial origin, or from one of the Charkov Island noble families.

Guy Redpantos meanwhile preoccupied himself with climbing the mountains west of Dv’gav. While the mountains were rumoured to be crawling with bandits, mountain cats and great tusked goats, the skirmisher saw little else alive but the occasional cliff pigeon. He was rewarded for his time after a few days when he came upon the corpse of a fellow climber. The poor fellow was stuck with an arrow through the throat, but it didn’t seem he had been robbed, as all his equipment was still there. Odd, Redpantos would have assumed any bandits would take whatever they could off a victim, but all the better for him. The corpse also had a map, with an X marked at (e,9).

Lucid Crow
Spoiler :
’That kid tried to sell me those tusks while he was bleeding out. How did he even drag those back? They’re longer than he is tall, and his leg is almost right off him. Wizards are crazy, I telly you. Mad!’
Imperial Army Sergeant, Fort Wlozy

The Lucid Crow mage duo split up, with Uruhara searching for rumoured bandit treasure around Fort Wlozy, while Natalia took another guard gig with Long Winds Caravans.

Natalia pulled off the guard job flawlessly, blasting away a pair of hungry wolves that tried to sneak in during the night to steal some food.

Uruhara meanwhile did not find any bandit treasure, though he did run face first into a marboar. The beast was the size of a mule, and twice as heavy. The wizard managed to kill the creature with waves of sorcery, but he took serious wounds from the monster’s twisted black tusks. He managed to remove the tusks before dragging himself back to the Fort and passing out. The Fort’s smith suggests that he could fashion the tusks into mastercraft equipment for 30 gold, or could be sold to buyers for 20 gold.

The Polud Irregulars
Spoiler :

For their first job, the Polud Irregulars took a contract protecting elven pilgrims trekking to a mountain holy sight. The climb was treacherous, with only a barely perceptible trail to follow. Things were made increasingly difficult when a band of human and halfling bandits began harassing the procession with a series of hit and run attacks. Each time the Irregulars beat them back, but both the pilgrims and the mercenaries taking on some injuries. The bandits were eventually all killed or driven off, and the pilgrims finished their rites in peace.

The Redshirts
Spoiler :
’Hey new guy, you’re going to want to duck.’
Crimson, seconds before blowing up the hillside.

The Redshirts took a simple caravan job as their first contract in Ziemno. They ran intro trouble north west of Fort Vorat, coming under fire from bandits in the hills. The first accurate arrow flight caused some minor wounds among the Redshirts and caravaneers, but the responding barrage of sorcery lit up the hills, driving away the bandits. The Redshirts moved in after healing themselves, poking through the charred and blasted hills for corpses. Those they found were surprisingly well equipped for bandits, though identifying them was impossible thanks to being shredded by the magic blasts.

The Sea Worgs
Spoiler :
’Thank Hikar we’re paying on completion of contracts.’
Fort Midor Ish Hikar mercenary contract handler.

The Sea Worgs split up to cover two contracts. The first contract, patrolling near Fort Midor Ish, was covered by Captain Mooseblood and Gonnic. While the pair was nominally there to deal with incoming Imperials, they soon found themselves face to face with a marstag coming out of the Marwoods undergrowth, eyes growing faintly green in the night. Gonnic was killed almost immediately, impaled on the beast’s monstrous antlers, where his corpse remained until the end of the fight. Dalas was heavily injured, only saved thanks to a nearby patrol of Imperial soldiers.

The rest of the company had better luck taking an anti-poaching contract, successfully scaring off a group of Swit poachers without any violence. The mercenaries got the impression that more may return in the future though, without more extreme punitive action.

Prince Sedlak, happily ordering servants to stuff the marstag corpse

The Shadowdancers once again took the marstag contract, this time sending Sargal and Saphaleh to hunt the beast while Morgun recovered from his wounds. The magic wielding duo tracked down the beast, and was able to bring it down with their combined sorcery. The marstag didn’t go down easily though, and severely gored Saphaleh.

Silverwolves

’Damnable Vorel can’t keep their own backward-arse inbreds from attacking their own people. I’m supposed to be fighting monsters, not dealing with this rabble…’
Imperial Army Captain, Fort Nos.

Coffers stuffed with newly found gold, the Silverwolves hired two new recruits and took two contracts.

The first contract was a bandit headhunt. Serverian, Melon, Chion, Samantha Goodwin, and Vodka Vodkavich set out on the trail of the highwaymen, and soon found them extorting a group of travellers. The Silverowolves’ archers made quick work of the highwaymen outliers, though the ensuing melee with a handful of heavier bandits resulted in some mild to moderate wounds. The highwaymen turned out to be Vorel soldiers, though apparently off duty.

The second contract was a simple caravan job, which ran into no troubles at all, lucky for the new recruits.

Spoiler :
’Alright you tiny little half-buggers! Give us all yer booty and- er… oh. Oh damn.’
Pirate, suddenly surrounding by Stunties and Skinnies.

The Stunties and Skinnies undertook a contract to rid Cekic’s waters of pirates. The Imperial Trademaster begrudgingly accept to lend the mercenaries a small trading ship, on the condition that the company would have to pay for any damages. Posing as two simple halfling traders, the Stunties and Skinnies quickly attracted the over-eager pirates. Coming up in their two small fishing boats, the pirates climbed aboard the trading ship, where they soon found themselves swamped by nearly a dozen sellswords bursting from crates around them. The ensuing fight was a massacre, with the pirates still undermanned from the fight they had with a different company last moon, and the Stunties and Skinnies got by without any serious injuries.

Swellswords
Spoiler :
’It’s going to take half a moon to clean this…’
Imperial Army Captain, seeing the crypt for the first time.

The ever growing hoard of Swellswords bid on two contracts, but only won one of them, resulting in all 46 employees taking the crypt survey job. With the sound of half-hundred poorly or unarmed rabble crowding into the crypts, it was not at all surprising that whatever dwelled in the dark’s interest was piqued. A creature unlike anything the Imperial Archeologists had ever seen set upon the mob. It was twice the hight of a human or elf, and while it held the shape of a humanoid, it’s body was complete and utter blackness,as if there was simply a hole into nothingness in whatever space it occupied. Upon its body of nothing it was clad in plates of an oddly transparent material with a soft yellow glow, and it wielded a massive sword made of the same material. The creature smashed into the Swellswords, cutting down the rabble in great bloody swathes. Against a regular guard squad or a properly armed mercenary company, it would have killed them all. But up against the disordered, untrained and under equipped mass of Swellswords, it fell, utterly overwhelmed as recruits clambered over it, ripping at its plates and stabbing into its blackness. As the plates fell it shrank screamed, until the last plate clanked to the gore-covered ground, the blackness gone. As soon as word got back to the capital of the event, the company was relieved by an Imperial Army regiment. The Imperials and the archeologists took all the plates and the sword, though Muncel managed to take a long shard that had broken off the sword, hiding it in his coat.

Rumours
New Rumours
Spoiler :
Polnoc
From a half-elf merchant in Brud na Plazi:
’The were from one of the Princess’ armies, I’m sure of it. They dressed like it, spoke like it, and carried themselves like soldiers, not bandits. They said there was a ‘toll’ for crossing the bridge now. Sod on that! The Imperial taxman said nothing about it. Damn soldiers are just doing whatever they want now, and the Princess’ aren’t giving two sharts, and the Imperial bureaucrats don’t want to get their fingers dirty. Can’t rightly hire anyone to go up and kill Royal Family soldiers, but if some ruffians who didn’t mind pissing off the Princess’ some went up and took them out, I wouldn’t complain, and they’d make a pretty penny from all the coin those bastards have cinched…’

Kosz
From a half-elf prospector in Fort Usta:
’One of them mercenary gangs found gold in them hills, and now everyone one and their dog is up there, poking around for the good stuff. And they’re finding it too! Hundreds of coins worth of raw gold is flowing out, free for anyone to go pick out of the ground. Or, if you’re an utter bastard, free to be taken from the cold dead hands of those that did the actual work to get it out of the ground.’

Old Rumours
Spoiler :
Ziemno
From a human ‘sailor’ in Dv’gav:
Aye, I was aboard the Stampede, first mate I was! Alright, second mate. Okay, Okay! I was deckhand. I was still onboard though! We set out of Odrodzi for Dv’gav, hauling some heavy as hells dwarven metal. Fine stuff I’m sure, but I swear to the Mother we were halfway under just out of the bay. Said to the captain it would be the death of us. Hah, I was mostly right! Not for me though, ol’ wiley one I am! we got hit by a storm midway, big black nasty one. Got turned around, and smashed up against the east coast. Where? Blast if I know! Somewhere by the damned forests, had to trudge through those dark woods, dodging beasts and bandits for a day just to get to Temho. I won’t be going back, no way, but if any of you fools think you can get through those woods, you find a nice boat full of fine dwarven steels…

Cieplo
From a human shepherd in Mal’kiv:
So, I was out tending the goats, as I do, you see, and then I saw! Something shiny, out across the field. Thought it might be some coin, a nice shiny silver, or even a gold! I was so close to it, and it was much bigger than coin, what could it have been? I was just reaching out, when a damnable horak swooped down, nearly took of my head! It grabbed the shiny, and that wasn’t enough, it took one of the goats! Flew off with a bale of earth in one claw and my goat in the other! Flew south, towards the hill lands. Ain’t got no coin to hire one of those fancy mercenary companies, and the guard don’t care none for a lowly goat herder. If only I had been just a second faster…

Skal
From a halfling caravaneer in Sasiedzi:
Have you checked the lists? So, did you see it? Right here, look! We should have nearly five pounds more, and this isn’t the first time. Look at this one, and this one, and this one! A pound here, a pound there, who knows how long this has been going on… No, the buyers haven’t made a fuss, few even really notice the difference. Find out where it's going? No, it would cost more to do that then just ignore it. Who knows, maybe someone is skimming off the top in Yedi Tepeli or Odrodzi, or maybe the soldiers in Forts Wlozy or Ucho need some extra wine…

Polud
From a dwarven hunter at Fort Midor Ish, during deportation interview:
Yeah, yeah, you need a statement. Just like the like the Temple Rangers or the Imperial Consul. I’ll probably need to give a couple more back in Skal, eh? Alright, alright. I was hunting, er, poaching. Where else can you find so much unowned, untamed land outside of the Mar? Well, yeah, but Swit is so boring! And you know what Swit doesn’t have? Rachs. Yeah, that’s what I was hunting after, a wild rach. Big leathery bastard, stalking the forests north of Ak Ie. Why? Gold? No, there’s no way I could take any of the remains out of Polud, the damn rangers would have hanged me. But the stories my friend, the stories. I would be known across Rohnia…

Swit
From singing halfling boy in Auksas:
Old man on the hill,
we all call him Sill.
Potions he does brew,
all he eats is stew.
If you take a spill
you can go see Sill.
Fix you good as new,
then he’ll feed you stew!

Zmier
From an Imperial guardsman in Paznokcia:
I thought the corporal was a lying arse, but I saw it myself, I tell ya. That orc band we skirmished with last quarter? No, the other one, the one where sergeant Privich got cut in half. Yeah, that one! Did you see their bandleader? Yeah, and did you see what he was wearing? That was some of the most incredible plate I’ve ever seen! Must be from a forgemaster, dwarven most likely! If only we could’ve nabbed him, but I don’t much look forward to running into that band again…

Kosz
From a fisherman in Skala:
Biggest river eel I’ve ever seen, that one was. Nearly took me arm off, and sure as hell took my boat. Bigger than my little dingy she was, I didn’t have a chance. My fault though, can’t blame the old girl, I felt the pull was too strong, but I got greedy, must of tore her mouth up. Too bad I didn’t have a bigger boat though, could have squeezed enough oil outta her to give half o’ me old platoon some of them speedy potions…

Pogrzeb
From a huntsman in Tanuc:
Never seen hunting like this before round here. In the past quarter alone I’ve nabbed ten does and four bucks. Every day! I don’t even have to go out for long, the boys and I are almost always back to the old lady by noon. Some kind of miracle it is, praise the Mother and Father. Course, some of the older folk say it’s the spirit of the forest coming back, or something coming from the trees, or some other superstitious rubbish. All I know is that I hope it keeps up, we’re making a killing…

Rozbita
From a Trade League merchant in Cieply:
I was expecting two shipments by now, one from Pocalunki and one from Usciski. Only the Pocalunki one came and went. Been two days since the expected arrival date. That means either pirates got him or the dumbass sunk himself. Don’t got the gold to send someone after him, so I hope he just sunk himself…

Polnoc
From a dwarven miner in Adatekni:
Not the first time he’s gotten himself lost in the mines, but I’d wager this is definitely the longest. Call the guards? Why in blazing hells would I do that? He’s an arsehole! I hope he stays lost in there, or better yet eaten by a troll or rocksnake. Means less competition for me, that bastard can forge like all demon. Let’s just pray he meets a real one down there…

Stracil
From a dwarven guardsman in Tirmik:
Ever seen a mountain horak? Sure, they’re smaller than a plains horak, but they stick together, live in the cliffsides like wild pigeons. Real pain to climb up to ‘em, but the nests are just full of stolen shiny goodies. Of course, it’s not like it’s just the climb that’s difficult, but the damn horaks will be coming at you the whole time, and working together too! They might only be a bit bigger than a wolf, but when you have a dozen of them swarming around you on a cliffside, it’s down right terrifying. Why am I telling you this? Well, I saw a new flock of them settling up the mountain and - wait, where are you going?

Great update!

Is there a way to heal outside of having a doctor?

Can Specialists be fired and have a new one hired the same turn? Does it cost gold to recruit a new specialist?

on that note I should have an entertainer

Wonderful :)

Question. Shouldn't Ront level up now?

Yep! He'll level up at the beginning of next update, you just need to say what you want him to level into.

Can Specialists be fired and have a new one hired the same turn? Does it cost gold to recruit a new specialist?

Nope, for now you're stuck with specialists.

on that note I should have an entertainer

Yup, include that in your orders and he'll pop in. You'll need someone to distract the meat shields from their fate...

NOTE: Medicine costs have changed to buy: 10g, sell: 5g

“No, no no! This is all wrong” Urahara furrowed his brow “Once again, you’ve missed key aspects of our origins!” Sighing dramatically as he lay on the table, Urahara asked “Why did you even ask for this interview if you weren’t going to listen to anything I say”

The stern looking elven man shook his head “If you wouldn’t mind, let me interject on three points. First, I am not a reporter, I am a cartographer. I make MAPS. Second, this is not an interview, this is a kidnapping. And third, I find some of the details of your origins difficult to believe. Also, on a side note, you should really go see a doctor about that leg”

Zolo, who had just entered the office to Urahara arguing with a tied up elf, turned to Natalia and the new recruit who Zolo had no idea was hired “Did something happen while I was out?”

Natalia flipped absentmindedly through her book “Urahara kidnapped what he presumed to be a reporter off the street. We’re waiting until he discovers otherwise.”

“Right then. Why did Urahara kidnap a random person off the street?”

Natalia shrugged as she flipped to the next page “He wasn’t random. He was writing. Urahara just made a logical jump from there”

“I see. And you’re content with him randomly kidnapping this person?” Then without missing a beat, Zolo snapped his fingers “Of course, how could I forget, this is just standard procedure around here”

“Really?” The recruit asked “I thought I was special when I got kidnapped.”

“Nah” Uruhara shouted “Yours was the same script as Zolo’s. Even the whole drunken rampage part”

“Script?” Asked the recruit

Ignoring the recruit, Zolo turned to Natalia “So why did Urahara kidnap this man?”

“We keep losing contracts to this other company, and not enough companies have heard of us. Uruhara is trying to change that”

“Of course, so we just kidnap a publicist? That’s one way to make the news! And why haven’t we kidnapped a doctor? Or medicine? Also, where is Lubbock”

“Couldn’t find one. Too expensive. Paid time off”

“We get paid time off?” Asked the recruit

“Lubbock thinks he does” Natalia smiled menacingly, sending a shiver down Zolo’s spine

“Alright Lucid Crow!” Shouted Urahara “Since he’s not writing, we’re going to his employer to see if we can get some...positive coverage….”

The elven man looked hopeful “Yes please! The Skal Cartographical Soci….”

Before he could finish his sentence, Urahara shouted “Off to the Skal Daily! Zolo, you hold the reporter’s rope. He’s a slippery one, don’t let him go”

Zolo sighed “Boss, listen. I think this is a mistake. I understand we need news coverage but not all news is good news. Let’s let this chap go and see if we can kidnap a doctor. I know a good one”

“Nonsense Zolo, my leg is fine! Recruit, get my cloak!”

“Yes sir!” Said the recruit. As he opened the closet door, Natalia and Zolo shouted “NOT THAT ONE” but moments too late, and the recruit burst into flames.

Urahara frowned “Pity. But technically, he didn’t receive the crow tattoo yet, so he’s not our problem!” He smiled at the elf mischievously

“I didn’t see anything” said the cartographer

Urahara beamed “That’s what I like to hear! Now, off we go!”

Zolo was quite frankly surprised that Urahara failed to find a doctor, but was able to find the Skal Daily, being that it was buried deep within a labyrinth of back alleys and side streets. Urahara blasted the door open with a quick spell, and marched triumphantly into the newsroom that was bustling with activity just moments ago.

A young dwarven woman asked softly “Can….Can we help you?”

“Yes! My name is Urahara, the leader of Lucid Crow, and I’m here for my interview!”

“Interview?” Asked the young dwarf. She looked at the other staff members who shrugged “I...did you have an interview scheduled?”

“Does the owner of the fastest growing mercenary start up need an interview to be scheduled?” Before the dwarf could finish, Urahara shouted “Of course not! Now, it all began as I…..”

After an hour of what Zolo admittedly thought was decently entertaining story, the dwarven girl was given the chance to speak “So again, for the fifth time, I’m not a reporter. I run the presses. The man you blasted unconscious was our lead one, but he’s….unconscious. Second, this is not an interview, this is a hostage situation. And third, I find some of the details of your origins difficult to believe. Also, on a side note, you should really go see a doctor about that leg.”

Urahara clapped his hands and smiled “Thank you so much for all of your help, Skal Daily, I truly appreciate it! And remember, if I’m not on your front page, I’ll burn your office down tomorrow! Cheers!”

As he left the building, Natalia followed Urahara with an unusually dreamy look in her eyes. Zolo untied the cartographer, and turned to the distraught dwarven girl. “So uhh….sorry about that....My name’s Zolo, do you think we could uhh… get a drink so-” and then he got hit in the face with a book as the girl screamed “GET OUT!”

Running, Zolo grinned. He liked them feisty. And with his training, even with the blood running down his face, it didn’t hurt to ask.
