I really don't like the idea of civ-specific wonders. The americans getting the pyramids is exactly the 'what if' that civ is all about.

Its a preference issue. That is why it is nice to have the Mod's.

I find the biggest differnce between the Mod's and the Epic game is that some of the Mod's intentionally break the symmetry. This leads to greater differences, more historicity, etc.

For instance, if you play Warhammer, the differences in the Civ's and the flavors is a lot greater than the Epic game. Chaos is much different from the Empire which is different from the undead factions. A lot of this 'flavor' is created by different units, governments, buildings, and wonders which are often keyed to religions and types but are pretty specific. The differences between Civ's in the Epic game is substantially smaller.

TAM also has these features and perhaps goes farther. Almost every Civ has a Civ specific wonder. The Romans get a fearsome military, the Egyptians get tremendous early tech and a powerful start, the Hittites get a powerhouse capital that can churn stuff out fast. Rhye's also has features like this. Rhye's changes the game drastically, and expanding at all costs in the beginning isn't the only way to victory.

Which is 'best', civ-specific or not? Its a meaningless question. I like the difference, others don't. I think the moral of the story is it is great to have the mods and the ability to play either way.

I think what Breunor is saying is that Civ specific should not be put out with the release, as it would be an easy moddable thing. that way you are not forcing people into something that they don't like, where as if it is just mods then people can use it if they want.

Thanks Peanut!

Aaronpark, sorry if I wasn't clear. I guess I shouldn't have said it was 'meaningless'. What I meant to say is that the games with Civ-specific wonders are so different that they are really different games. I like them, but its more of a poll, not really an item to 'discuss'. So it would be very useful as a poll to see what people want more, but at that point there really isn't much to discuss. But if somebody likes a game where everyone has the chance to rewrite history and create Civ's, while I like a game which keys on the differnces in civ development, there really isn't anywhere to go.

I didn't mean to imply that the thread isn't worthwhile -- indeed, I'm glad you took up mantle to discuss it.

Peanut got what I am saying. I guess I was assuming that the debate would come out near even. Because of this, you can have the most people enjoy their experience by not having them in the core game and putting them in the mods.

Realistically, including them probably takes a LOT of playtesting which would slow game development down. Some of the Mod's that have them I think don't waorry about pure balance, some of the Civ-specific wonders are clearly better than the others.

Best wishes,

Breunor

It would be more fair to make culture specific wonders like Native American Pyramids for the American Civs or Statue of Zeus for Mediterainian civs mayber have them give you an extra UU or sumfin.

I'm not sure if this is what you were saying but i think you shold be able to choose a region and get wonders for there maybe. This may solve the problem about not being able to rewrite history.

If you get a certain wonder should it change world opinon like aztek pyramids caused their downfall, or the staue of liberty made people like america more

Totally irrelevant ot the discussion, but I just had to say it: the Statue of Liberty was actually built by the French!:crazyeye:

This thread HAS inspired me to try some of these mods tho, if I can figure out how.

The wonders in Civ were civ-specific wonders (Hoover Dam, Pyramids, Hanging Gardens, the Pentagon, etc.). I don't see how you could make Civ-specific wonders (or small wonders) and still keep all of the other wonders universal.

Each mod should come with a readme.txt file to tell you how to install it. Once you do that, click on 'Scenarios' for Vanilla Civ/PTW or 'Civ-Content' for Conquets, find the file, and play. The mod/scenario creators are pretty good about helping you install it. And you can always ask in their thread if you have problems.

How about the civ specific wonders can only occur in certain instances. Like america and france are friend for so many years america can get the statue of liberty. things like that basically adding to instead of taking away wonders

I believe the Rise and Rule mod addresses this very issue. Some wonders are only available to some groups.

I had an idea. What if there were natural wonders. Like that red rock in australia, or the grandcanyon, or mount everest, or that waterfall in africa, (sorry about the names) it could be a religious area or tourist attraction like in conquests. Post revisions to this idea or additions or say your opinion of it.

If you like civ-specific wonders so much - then you should try my mod :D
I made 2 civ-specific wonders per civ. :king:
And of course PLENTY of other wonders - but it's not ready yet :( (it will probably be in late february:sad: ).
I will add a edit/url to the developement thread w/ the list of new wonders, improv, units, resources and stuff when i will find out where to add it :D and when i have spare hours for writing endless stuff ;). (if you are intrested i mean :p )

i dont like the idea. civ is about what if. i wouldnt mind them in a real life simulator mod, so that you can watch civ3 play out real life history. but in the main game no. it just would become too repetitive.
