First they demonstrated Rome:

Rome got to pop 10, Athens (or was it Sparta) was also pop 10, meanwhile Kyoto (jap capital) is at pop3, and later pop 4.
Rome attacks Greece who is still using mass warriors/chariots.

Then they show off Congo... It's 1610AD and Congo has infantry. Meanwhile Japan has warriors/crossbows :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Let's keep in mind that these games are set up to purposefully show some elements, maybe they aren't played straight.

And then, AI touch ups will probably go on until launch, so maybe they botched something regarding how the AI stores money to upgrade its units.

Remember, they are playing on Prince too.

Actually it sounded like they are normal playthroughs employees played.

i.e. The Rome game was just recently played by Ed Beach a few days ago, and the Congo game was played by someone else (I can't remember the name but they mentioned it several times).

It's also the latest build.

Latest build doesn't mean anything. It could be the latest build where they messed up the AI's code for upgrading units.

Do we know anything about difficulty levels? Maybe Prince is easier this time? It seemed like that Kongo game was pretty easy for the player.

Latest, not final. There's still a month to go. Plenty of time to make the necessary tweaks.

Or the player was really good...:crazyeye:

Ed said that Prince is normal, where the AI don't get any bonuses. Maybe Japan took a hit and is really behind everyone else. Meanwhile Kongo is doing really well with high pop cities.

Yeah I am pretty sure Ed Beach spent 2+ years of his life developing a game where on reasonable difficulty your infantry meets with warriors in modern era.

Some of you just need to be worried about something, don't you?

Some of you can just put your fingers in your ears, sing la-la-la and ignore any possible worries, can't you? ;):p

I'd say this is a legitimate worry. While the reasons given in this thread could apply, it is a very short time until release, and you'd think if they'd have a proper AI, they'd want to show it. Not a peep has been heard about the AI for all this time, apart from much talk about their strategic agendas, etc. The combat AI has barely been mentioned (afaik; please direct me to a video where they talk about it if it does exist). Worry level: 8/10.

The guy who set up the Kongo game was Pete Murray, who I'm pretty sure knows his stuff. The situation would likely be the same with a lot of people here if we played Civ 5 on Prince.

I think the problem lies in Greece's REXing and keeping up with their infrastructure while neglecting their military somewhat - and Ed mentions it. So they had the ability to build units but gold for possible upgrading of early units was spent elsewhere (for example, builders or buildings).

Last stream when ED played with Norway Japan AI has 0 ships and 0 units on turn 150.
Now newest build warriors and bows vs infantry and 6-7 pop cities versus 16-17 Congo. Best AI city i seen on stream had 11 or 12 pop.
AI totally incompetent.
21 october disaster incoming.

Yeah, and I'm sure they'd never release a Civ game without research overflow either.

Spoiler :
For those who have forgotten, the release version of V had no research overflow.

Look, a month from release, it is now time to be worried if things don't look right. Maybe this will be fixed, maybe it won't be, but let's not condescend towards legitimate concern.

Well, it's no better than relying on inductive reasoning to turn one happenstance into an 8/10 concern. Are you too used to playing on Deity to think such discrepancies should *never* transpire?

This is perhaps the most concerning thing I have seen so far. I hope they can whip the AI into shape before launch.

You know it, I know it, all us regulars at Civfanatics know it. The AI will be as good as it was in civ5, civ4, civ3, civ2, civ1 and all the side games.

Its not that i think Firaxis is incompetent (they are very competent) but the AI has been poor in so many civ games (and even x-com which was a seperate team!) that wishing or hoping for better AI in the next game is just a pipe dream.

It has been discussed to death; the players that would apprechiate better AI are a minority. Plenty of players still lose on Prince and below difficulties so AI is good enough. As lazy and annoying as it is, if you want a challenge you will just have to enable AI cheats.
