I like to play Internet games starting as Romans. Do you guys usually train workers or settlers when you first start the game?

I think you would be better posting this in the MP forum.

:rotfl:

Playing SP in almost every situation Worker first is the best move (Exceptions do exist, most notable beeing Seafood).

It is far better to work 4 (or more) improved tiles in your capital while building your first settler, as oppsed to paying maintenace for two cities, both working plain earth.

Also by building the settler late you probably can settle a better city with regard to your overall strategy, as more land will be explored, and some strategic ressources should be revealed alredy.

I think what Sam_Yaeger tried to say, is, that in MP sometimes different strategies are used then in SP.

Depends on the map size and number of players. If I'm given enough breathing room I often build a settler first (unless Stone/Marble in the fat cross) so that I can found a second city in a good production point to grab the Oracle for the Fuedalism rush so that my capital can focus on Barracks and then pumping out some early troops or what ever else the situation calls for.

However building either a worker or a settler first can be very dangerous in MP. One false move and you'll find yourself in a war under 20 turns and your capital in flames so its a tough gambit.

You cant 'speed up' production much early in the game... However some "optimization" do exist:

- Settling your capital on a Plains Hill gives you +1:hammers:. It can shave 3 turns from your first Worker, so 1 turn spent on moving the Settler up the hill is worth it...
- Beeing Expansive you get a bonus on :hammers: when building worker. So better Work a 3:hammers: tile, than 1:hammers:+2:food: (which is the same for non expansive leaders) - again can save you up to 3 turns on the first worker, assuming you have that one 3:hammers: tile (Forested Plains Hill). With Settlers same is true for Imperialsitic.
- Having a 3:food: tile and teching BW as first tech: Building Warrior first working the 3:food: tile. On turn 7 food bar has 21:food: (of 22 needed), so you switch to work a 1:food:+2:hammers: tile. Warrior will be done 3 turns later, you start worker, revolt to Slavery as soon as BW is done, and whip the Worker. This way on turn 16 you have a Warrior + Worker
