Severe out of sync problems

I'm having serious oos problems. My friend and I play via internet, rather than direct IP, connection and we seem to be almost permanently oos since the last Warlords patch/BTS. Declarations of war, peace and battles all seem to provoke instant oos. We've tried carrying on, which just ends up with an alternate reality when we load up the game next, and logging out and rejoining, but nothing seems to make a difference. We're going to try direct IP later, but I'm not holding my breath.

Is there anything that can be done to avoid oos problems?

Reloading 1 or 2 turns earlier always fixes the problem for me. In a typical 2 month game I get 1 or 2 OOS errors total that way. You just need to make sure you are not reloading the turn that's already OOS corrupted (that's why it's safer to go 2 turns back).
