I just discovered the notion of SG's while researching Civ 4... and I absolutely love the idea! But I'm a total newbie (to SGs, but also to Civ 4, though not to the series)... what's the best way to get my toes wet and jump into one of these games?

Pentium is being cheeky, but that's exactly right. No getting the toes wet, just jump right in. In fact, now is a great time, since even old SG hands know as much about civ4 as you do. I'm sure several games are looking for players, but I know for a fact that LKendter is looking for some for his LK109 game, which has no special goals (cultural victory, spaceship, etc.) or rules (always war, isolationist, etc.).

Ok, sounds good. I see a lot of SGs starting up with a pre-existing roster (to this naive observer). Is the right way to join just sign up in the thread of an SG, or send a private msg to the organizer, use telepathy, etc... ? Also how do you tell when an SG is full or not?

I'm starting in on the newbie game eotinb started so hopefully I'll be a little less clueless after that one has rolled for a bit...

Hi! A lot of times, SG's are planned in a planning thread. For example, "RB" games are planned in the thread marked "The Realms Beyond - Succession Game Discussions", and the thread for the game is only started once there's a full roster in the planning thread.

Another thing that happens frequently is that a player will start a thread when they have a game with an open roster. But, as people sign up (usually, by seeing that there are openings and posting a reply saying that they're interested), the thread's starter will edit the first post so that people can see quickly whether the game still has open spots available. So, it might look like the game was full when the thread was created, but that's not the case (what that is a sign of is that the person running the game cares enough to edit the first post and keep the game information accurate- that's a good sign that if you participate in one of that player's future games, they're going to have the perseverance to stick with an entire game with your roster).

Good luck, and I hope that we have a chance to meet in game sometime!

man this concept blows me away as well.

back back way back before the war (and well after the war too - cheers to 6 month wars) when I was stationed in england, my roomate and I used to play those classic nintendo(nes) koei games like romance of the three kingdoms and Gengis Khan as a sort of proto SG concept.

I was the infrasructure wiz and would spend infinite time min maxing all the queues and the micromanaged 'nibbly bits' that makes turn based games soooooo fun. :D My roomie would get fed up and kick me off the controller while I took the free time to get the beer and remember to use the restroom.

Paul was the 'burn it all down - again!' type who would take my neatly trimmed lawns and trained peasents and just RIP apart everything, much to the chagrin of the poor AI's within our reach. He was very much a burnt toast sort of warmonger making sure to completely strip anything he didn;t plan on leaving me.

So when paul's offensive push finally pettered out he would abdicate the throne ...er lazyboy... and call me over to um "fix crap".

He would hand the empire back to me always larger than before but always in a complete state of dissarray with peasents run amok and the gardens weed strewn.

And so the cycle repeated - albeit a little more woozy from said beer. :goodjob:

This SG thing takes that so much further in that it's online (duh) and civ is so much more complex a game than ghengis khan was/is. This complexity sets SG up as a great teacher as it really helps not only the lurkers following the sulla/sirians but also the players themselves see how others think.

Also, the strict turns means you really focus on your portion and have to reassess your views/opinions on the game. Amazing synergy in that I'd dare say peeps that compliment each other, like sulla and sirian, play a stronger SG game than solo in that they constantly have to prove/justify their moves to the other, even if the other never says anything.

Amazing job all around on this site but SG is the Crown Jewel. Having fun while you learn and it's easy on the sleep deprivation if you stay away from the odd mono games :groucho:

oh man look it's after 4 am, better start another game before I realize it's late. :crazyeye:

Cheers!
