SGn00b - for those new to SG's

Welcome back ST :) Happy New Year to all.
I'm surprised that I wasn't skipped actually as by all accounts, it has been my turn since Dec 30 and I haven't been around. Take this message as my "Got It" message and I'll play tomorrow night (24hrs).
Strangely, I haven't been receiving emails advising that others have been posting in this thread. Checked the subscriptions and I am definitely still subscribed to this thread. I just didn't think anyone had posted... The other thing is, is that I am subscribed to RB6/RB1 and other SGs too and I am receiving email responses from all of those, just not this one. Anyone else experiencing this?
Hope you all had fantastic New Year's parties. I think I got to bed at 7am Sunday morning after wayyyyy too much  and :smoke: which almost led to :vomit: ... That's what I call a decent New Year's effort

Sadan: I had that once when you posted for me to take another turnset, but other than that it's been working fine.

I haven't been here the last couple of days because I've been messing with my fabulous Christmas presents and now I'm trying to get all my homework done before school starts tomorrow (bleeeh).

Anyway, good to see you back Toma!

Well I didnt receive an email notification when you replied Pie. It is just chance (and luck) that I visited this thread again - back at work now . I wish the x-mas/new year break was a month long.

Anyway, I'll play those turns tonight once home and had a few  ... :mischief:

I'm up to 1.52, in fact I played my last turn in the patched version.

For me not only is it back to work tomorrow, but I'm taking a class this semester, so that fun starts next week. It's been a coupla years since I graduated, plus this is a grad level class, so this could be interesting. Good luck to everyone with back to work and school.

ST, yeah, I am currently patched at v1.52. I think most in this SG already have patched to v1.52. Was it Beef or the Admiral that expressed concern of the combat changes in the patch?

Everything else in this post from here on is OT - Just a warning...

Now now ST, no need to say things like that, let's look at this for a moment:

School Holidays over the Month of January - Good or Bad?

Good
Time off just after Christmas/New Year
Can laugh at those suckers that have to work through
No work/homework to speak of over the break
Can enjoy the Australian summer (as in, enjoy the actual *day*)

Bad
If not working at the very least part-time, no money
Have to face the following year of harder work
Pending homework and assignments/exams
The money, if working part-time especially, is helpful but not all that good.

Well, after writing this garbage, I dont know which is better. I sure know this, I would give my right somethingorother to have the rest of January off. :mischief:

You get all of January off? Lucky dog.

About the patch, I patched it about an hour or two after it came out.

Ok. About to start playing. It seems I have a lot of reading to catch up on first. I don't envy ST ;)
I'll post some thoughts (if I have any ) before I start the game. If not, you'll all see my turns up next...
Good to see that Monte and Mansa are at war. I hope they completely waste their forces on one another or drag other civ's into the war (hopefully not us however). This may be the big advantage we are looking for if one of them is able to drag in the Inca - hopefully on the losing side so they can expend their forces a little (please note, I have posted this without reading too much and also without looking at the save. If I am being an idiot, well, look at my avatar).

Was it Beef or the Admiral that expressed concern of the combat changes in the patch?
That was me - the combat changes now favour the civ with more advanced units more heavily than before, making it more expensive to swamp a small, advanced army with a large, primitive one. Anyhoo, I've already patched to play an RB game, so it doesn't really matter.
They still haven't fixed those bloody barbarian city names either - it's not like it'd be more than a couple of minutes' work to edit the file...

@Sadan - yup, I reckon we need to be poised to take advantage of that war, especially if Huayana gets pulled in (after all, it's primarily his land that we're after, other than that aztec city in the south of our territory).

Turn 0 - 1050AD
Drop science rate down from 80% (-25gpt) to 70% (-17gpt) - Machinery still in 6 turns for either rate. This may give us another turn or two at the higher rate.
Change Texcoco's current build from a Library (63 turns!) to a Lighthouse (45!) so we can get extra food on those water tiles. A worker down there posthaste would probably be a good idea - taking a worker via a ship is probably the best idea however we don't have much time as if Basra and/or Monte's borders expand before we get there, we have no hope without open borders with the Inca. Angle is probably the best city to build it in (11 turns after the Forge completes however it will grow in another 5 turns).
The Inca really don't have many troops guarding their cities. The two cities we can see have the following:
- Ollantaytambo (Copper, Rice and Incense in radius) --> 1 Axeman and 1 Archer however city is located on a hill.
- Machu Picchu (Copper, Sugar and 2 Gems in radius) --> 1 Spearman and 1 Archer
I think we should draw up battle plans very soon for our conquest. The Inca are now, without a doubt, in our way.
Second Gold Mine in Shanghai is also a priority to mine and hook up (although I think more food is required first as Shanghai cannot support both gold mines at this time).
At this point, we are second only in power to Saladin. The Inca are back in 5th with Monte catching up fast. We are leading the culture-stakes by a fair margin. Screenies later.

Turn 1 - 1055AD
Farm Rice at Angle.
Change citizen utilisation in Shanghai to work the Wine instead of tile due south. We get 4 more beakers and 1 commerce net out of this move.
Road cottage in Ironchou.
Christian Missionary finished in GE. Debate whether to send to Shanghai first as Chr has not spread there. Decide that this is where he will go. Benefits of state religion are too good to pass up.
Start Plantation on Dyes near GZ.
GE starts another CM (Christian Missionary) as we have at least Angle to convert (Texcoco can wait for now due to difficulty getting down there).

Turn 2 - 1060AD
Move worker NE of Shanghai to SE to work Banana's.
Pfft.. Nothing else this turn.

Turn 3 - 1065AD
An evil looking Mansa Musa asks us to declare war on the Aztecs as they are a "threat to us all". Yeah right. Tell him to fight his own battles as the Inc... ahhh, the gorilla's on the Banana near Shanghai are more of a threat to us. :satan:
1_Evil_Mansa.jpg

He is disappointed. Oh well. Tell King Kong that. I ask Mansa what he thinks of the Inca. He is annoyed with them. Good! :)
Mansa Musa adopts Theocracy.
About to start a Galley in Angle but realise that Monte's borders are all the way up to our southern coast so nothing but a Caravel would get through without Open Borders anyway. Damn! Change build to a Lighthouse instead. It will grow in 2 turns.
Shanghai becomes a haven for Christians. Excellent. We now have a 25% hammer bonus for buildings in that city.

Turn 4 - 1070AD
Worker finishes road at Ironchou. Moved to just outside Angle to connect road into that city. From there, I will start extending it back to Shanghai (plus mining the jungle-hill on the way).

Turn 5 - 1075AD
Surprise!
2_Colossus.jpg

We also conduct a census and find that we have 1 million souls in our empire. 1 million and 4 if we count the banana's and King Kong.
3_Million.jpg

Worker finished in Ironchou. Moved to GZ to work more Banana's.
Slow Beijing's growth slightly by moving two citizens out into the sea to work. There had been gorilla sightings in the area.
Beijing will grow in another four turns and then it is at max health. Change build to Aquaduct to combat this.
Set Ironchou to build a Granary for quick growth.

Turn 6 - 1080AD
Machinery finishes.
4_Machinery.jpg

Another CM finishes in GE. Send to Angle to spread religion there.
A Great Engineer is born in Beijing - Archimedes.
5_Archie.jpg

At the moment, he wants to add 1600 beakers onto Engineering. Eng is 1950 beakers away (23 turns). Put him to sleep for the moment. I don't think Engineering is good enough to rush for yet. Was thinking of the possibility of rushing a wonder but once again, we only have The Hanging Gardens and Sistine's available. Neither really is of use at this time. Pikemen would be nice but based on what the Inca have at this time (from what we can see of their borders), I am not impressed that Engineering is a good choice right now. GE starts a Cho-Ko-Nu (6 turns).

Turn 7 - 1085AD
Forge is finished in Shanghai. Starts work on a Cho-Ko-Nu as most other things are just too expensive at this time.

Turn 8 - 1090AD
Worker at Angle moved north to mine jungled-hill and start a road to Shanghai.
Pfft. Nothing else this turn.

Turn 9 - 1095AD
Same worker starts mine near Angle.
Sugar plantation finished near GZ. Shuffle citizens around to reduce our treasury deficit moreso (now -3gpt instead of -6gpt).
Road the plantation.
Christianity spreads in Angle by the Missionary. Nice guy.
6_Religions.jpg

Cannot decide what to do with the Great Engineer sitting on his arse in Beijing. Beef, I'll hand this one over to you as you have more experience in this than this particular n00bie does. I'm tending towards rush-building a wonder of some kind but at the moment, our available USEFUL wonders amount to basically bugger-all. Literature up in one turn so that will change some things.

Turn 10 - 1100AD
Happy New Century! [party]
Literature is founded.
Cannot attach Literature pic as there is a 10 image limit. My bloody preoccupation with smilies gets in the way sometimes.
Nobody seems to have founded Music so set *off*course for that as we will get a free Great Artist if founded first. He may be useful. Feel free to change this and everything else, Bone.
Saladin adopts Theocracy. Tokugawa adopts Serfdom and Vassalage.
Nothing else happened this turn so saved it here and all yours.

Save attached. Notes and more screenies on next post.

Some notes:
I think once we have our financial situation sorted out, which it is slowly on its way, we should look at attacking the Inca as they seem to have bugger all in way of military units stationed on our borders. A few quick strikes will make them lose one or two cities. We certainly seem to have the military advantage over them from what I can see.
Let's hope I wasn't :smoke: too much during these turns. I know that Bone will let me know if I was ;)

Now, onto some screenies... What's first.. Hrmmm.. Oh I know, how about a shot of our current standings? YAY!

Ha! Master Trader! I like it.

I can't look at the save, but from your report it looks like a build up of some Cho Ko's and Macemen and we should attack the Incans. Maybe a switch to theocracy/vassalage? Do we even have the option of vassalage?

Things are looking up! Money woes seem to be aliveated somewhat by the Colossus, and next we shall crush those pathetic evil blasphemous Incans. I haven't looked at the save but I'm sure it's the city upkeep that's killing us financially, so we should look at getting State Property (can't remember how far away it is, altough it's probably still a ways off). I think if we switch to Vassalage, then that'll pile on more upkeep, but of course it would be offset by switching from Organized Religion to Theocracy.

Of course I'm just throwing all my thoughts out there, most of it probably doesn't make any sense.

State Property's at Communism, which is a long way off our research path methinks.
Glad you kept that engineer, I'm always loathe to use them for anything other than wonders, and the Library is a great one - it gives about 6 gpp plus a load of beakers, and more with the Sistine Chapel or Representation :ok:
I'll play tomorrow - it's 20 to 2 in the morning and I just managed to spill apple squash on myself - time for bed, methinks.

Just a random point regarding the Inca. The Incan city due north of Texcoco should be first on our hit list for the following reasons:

1. We know what forces the Inca have in that city. I think the other city further north should also be taken but not right away as it is stationed on a hill.
2. The other reason is that of Texcoco. If we take the southern Incan city first, we can move our workers and further troops/missionaries into Texcoco as a matter of priority as it has basically no production or food production.

The only negative I can see with taking the southern city first is that it will put us closer to the war between Monte and Mansa and due to our very poor relations with both, we may be brought into the war - however if this is the case, we should be able to improve our standing with the "other" civ, depending on which side we are at war with. I certainly think Mali is a better ally. Monte we could possibly pick on after we have dealt with the Inca. With Saladin down at the southern part of the pangaea, if we attack Monte and take cities, we'll be in more contact with him - although that is probably too far away at this time to think about.

Our available civics are the following at this time (excluding the most basic ones - the top ones in each list):

Hereditary Rule - +1 :) per military unit in cities
Nothing in Legal (such as Vassalage)
Slavery (currectly in effect)
Nothing in Economy
Organised Religion and Theocracy in Religion - Theocracy is recommended for our war buildup soon. With Philosophy (which will come up soon I'm sure), we'll get access to Pacifism however this probably won't help with a +1gold payment for supporting military troops.

@Bone: Yeah I think rushing the Great Library will have a nice benefit to our empire. Even though Sistine's gives us more culture per turn than GL (10 vs 8 pt), we get 2 free scientists with the GL which I personally think cannot be underestimated in usefulness. The question is building the GL where? I think Beijing, or Guangzhou. GZ being close to the Inca border (although not for much longer with our military plans  ) will be effective to get the borders expanded as fast as possible. Good Enough would probably be in that category too however will need to be sufficiently protected against the AI. Beijing as it is our capital and relatively safe from AI's unless they come by ship.

After seeing this message from Pie, I thought I'd get some more screenies from my turns (1100AD) regarding our city upkeep and expenses. I know we can all look at the save ourselves but I like posting screenshots and a few () smilies thrown in for good measure...

Overview of Finances

Finance1.jpg

Unit Upkeep

Finance2.jpg

City Maintenance (Ouch!)

Finance3.jpg

Civic Costs

Finance4.jpg

So as you can see, the City Maintenance is the one that is hurting us the most with 29 of the total 59 gold in expenses going to that - i.e. around 50%.

Screenies good! I have to reboot to look at the save, so this saves me the trouble.

More on topic ;) can we build courthouses yet? Might be something we should aim to get?

No we can't actually :shakehead. Code of Laws is just 5 turns away. I think I must have looked like a cow stunned looking into headlights on a car when I saw the Music Advance/Great Artist combo.
