SGn00b - for those new to SG's

Hmm war with Toku. Let's see how far we can get.

Turn 1 - Some upgrades and moving troops around. I see what I can get for peace, and I don't get it. I want combustion for peace, and Toku is willing to give us Antium and 250 gold. I think we can go a little further, at least on more city, so I say no.

Turn 2 - Moving on Tokyo and Antium. Hopefully taking those will convince Toku to give us Combustion for peace.

Turn 3 - Bombardment starts at antium, it's the confucian holy city too!

Turn 6 - I think by the end of my turns I'll take both Antium and Tokyo! :)

Turn 7 - Because of some crappy results, Tokyo may not be taken...we'll see.

Turn 8 - Well at least I accomplished on of my goals. Problem is I coulda gotten this with out losing all our troops. I get this for peace. We need it for a while.

Turn 10 - Just some more building up and then we'll be ready for another war. Either Toku or Saladin. All the others are basically done.

Sorry about no screens, my computer ate them apparently.

Got it and I'll play it tonight (unless my girlfriend springs something on me unexpected, in which I'll play tomorrow night). If anyone can offer me some tips on how to stop my girlfriend doing that, I'm all ears :mischief:

Looks like my first goal will be to build up our troops again. No problems.

Know how I said my computer ate some pictures? Well one of them was what we got for peace. Sorry I didn't write it out. We got Rome, and some amount of gold. I believe it was 250. I want to build up and take it to Toku some more, especially after how lucky he got at Tokyo.

Now that, my friend, is impossible.

Quick note to say I am downloading the save now and will play between now and the time to go to bed. Can't wait actually as for the last few months, I've had to endure dial-up 56k access (which is really 48-50kb) and in the next week or so, I'll be moving over to ADSL2+ as it is known here (up to 24000kpbs). Now I expect all of you to come back at me and say "we've had that for years". Yes, I know, Australia is very behind the times (as adsl2+ has just started to be rolled out).

Be back soon with the turnlog and play. Its looking good folks :)

I use a program called "Printkey-pro" which unfortunately is not free (however other free ones exist), so I don't have to rely on Civ4 actually taking the screenie. It never fails to take a screenshot. I can edit the pic in the program and I then copy it over to Irfanview to reduce the size of the image (and sometimes reduce the image quality a touch which can vastly reduce the file size for a minimal image quality loss). From there, they are uploaded (which takes forever sometimes ).

I'll soon see for myself but I'm hoping that we have kind of broken the back of Toku. I've found (and this point has been posted by a lot of people too) that the A.I. will usually use most of its armed forces in the opening stages of any war. With that point in mind, I do hope that from here, it might be easy sailing to Domination (or hell, even conquest as Saladin surely has to be poo'ing his pants right about now ). Caesar is out of the game really.

It does show something to me at least that if Toku is willing to give a city to us, then it is possible that we do have him on the backfoot. I dont know if the A.I is programmed in this way or not as Rome was never his in the first place (as opposed to gifting a "native" city of his).

You know, I so much wish that wasn't true but I know it is. If she was a Civ4 fan, then it wouldn't be a problem. She only has to hear the opening music, a cow moo'ing, or Leonard Nemoy's voice without looking at the monitor to know that Civ4 is being played. :borg:

IT (1890AD)
Will concentrate on a number of things these turns. First thing I can see is that I will get our available worker force to build railways between our cities. Previous players have made a good start with this
I set our troops that need healing to heal in our cities. Most will take 2 turns to heal. Some up to 6 turns.
I take a look at our Power Graph. For the first time in approximately 800 years, we are the most powerful.

Power_Graph.jpg

Next, I take a look at our demographics. I don't think we have a problem here

Demographics1.jpg

Our Victory conditions

Victory.jpg

I decide to leave our Civics where they are for the moment :mischief:

Our relations with the other Civs
Saladin - Pleased - +5
Caesar - Friendly - +13
Monte - Furious - -6
Toku - Furious - -9

Toku is +6 towards Saladin; Saladin is +10 towards Toku.
We have 8 turns left on the Peace Treaty. Unless something happens, I think I'll leave it the way it is for now

and concentrate on building more forces for the next attack on Toku.

Our surplus resources

resources.jpg

Talking about trade, we are down the following techs with the AI:

Saladin
Liberalism
Democracy
Biology
Combustion
Artillery

Toku
Liberalism
Democracy
Biology

We are, at least, up the following over those two:

Saladin
Assembly Line (they must be researching this now surely!)

Toku
Military Tradition (Cavalry)
Assembly Line (Infantry)

I'll be aiming for Combustion (for our Oil) and then Industrialisation for Tanks. There is an Oil source in between Tlacopan and Ironchou. It has a jungle on it so will be good to remove. I see a lot of arse-kicking down the track :hammer: Electricity is due in 1 turn.
Rome is in starvation with no defenders and no build. Set it to build a Machine Gunner and will also fortify the city with another, built in another yet undecided city. For now, I move a Cavalry from Neapolis to Rome for some defense. There are also two infantry outside of Neapolis; I move those to Rome too. I promote one of them with City Garrison I & II. Rome's borders will expand next turn.

I micromanage a few cities (concentrating mostly on commerce without sacrificing production) to get our surplus gold up higher. I want to raise the science rate to research quicker. We need those Tanks ASAP as I don't think it will be long before Toku has both military tradition and assembly line. Vast majority of cities look very good.

I also upgrade an Archer to a Machine Gunner in Texcoco. It may have been better to disband him actually.

Ok, I think that is enough of an overview. Let's see how much I can achieve over these turns. Continued next post.

TURN 1 (1891AD)
Oh how very interesting! Saladin wants a defensive pact! This has many pros and cons to it. In a way, it would be a good idea to join with Saladin as it might give Toku second thoughts about declaring on us. And if Toku does, well we know what will happen. We can always cancel the agreement anyway (through declaration)... Our relations with Saladin once again will be improved (and the relationship between Toku and Saladin further strained). The cons? Well, just the principal of it. To me, we don't need anyone else at this time. Even though I don't think we could take them both on at the same time, we can certainly take either one of them on separately. No, this may be a mistake to some/most/all of you, but I think signing the agreement is a good idea. I just have a feeling that if we say no, Saladin may ask Toku for the defensive pact.
I agree to the pact; this may be cancelled later by declaring war on Toku again (which will happen). This at least will keep Saladin off our backs for now if it were to come to that. And we may get some cheap trades out of it too; just not now as he supposedly does not like us enough.. Idiot!
Electricity comes in. Romes borders "expand". Set research for Combustion (8 turns).
Connect up some more railroad. Hope you folks don't think I'm :smoke: too much by signing that defensive pact.
Death to Azteca finishes the Factory. Now doing a huge 54 hammers a turn. Set it to a Machine Gunner in 3 turns.

TURN 2 (1892AD)
GZ finishes a Granary. Set to a Cannon.
GE finished a Grocer. Set to observatory for the extra research bonus.
Build some more railroads.

TURN 3 (1893AD)
VIlcas completes a Harbour. Set to a Library.
Timbuktu finishes a Machine Gunner. Set to an Infantry.
Toku is slightly more pissed with Saladin.

Toku.jpg

TURN 4 (1894AD)
Buddhism spreads to Texcoco.
Antium comes online after rioting. Set its build to a Theatre to get those borders expanded. It is in starvation at the moment and only producing 7 hammers.
GZ finishes the Cannon (104 hammers a turn / 66 base). Set to an Infantry. Send Cannon to the front.
Railroad almost connected up to the front too.
Cuzco finished a factory. Set to build Mt. Rushmore (10 turns).
Death to Azteca finishes a machine gunner. Set to an infantry.

TURN 5 (1895AD)
 Nothing at all happens.
Cannon reaches the front. Sleep on a hill with some Cavalry. The cannon still has a promotion or 2 pending.
Saladin still will not trade any of his technology. He has changed his reason though - "He doesn't want to trade it just yet".

TURN 6 (1896AD)
Tlaxcala finishes a Machine gun. Build a barracks.
Rest of turn taken up with moving workers around.

TURN 7 (1897AD)
Revenna finishes an Infantry. Fortify it and move the cavalry out of the city to the front. Rev builds a barracks.
GZ finishes an Infantry. Build another.
Olly builds a factory. Set to machine gunner.

TURN 8 (1898AD)
Beijing builds Wall Street (we now move up to +127gpt). No point in increasing the science rate, even though I wanted to, as we get combustion no quicker.
Beijing now starts a machine gunner.
We get a Great Prophet in Beijing. I move him to Cuzco as being the founder of Hinduism, it has the most cities so will have the greater impact. I'll leave though for you Beef to do as you see fit with him.
Death to Azteca finishes another Infantry. Move him to the front. We are slowly building our forces again. Set this city to build another infantry.

TURN 9 (1899AD)
Combustion comes in. Raise science rate to 70%. The lure to Liberalism is strong (3 turns and its Civics). No, choose Industrialization (13 turns). We need tanks and NOW.
Our peace treaty with Toku comes to an end.
An Oil well will come online in 11 turns.
GZ finishes another Infantry (its moved to texcoco on its way to front). Going to build a Cannon now.
Our Great Prophet is set to sleep in Cuzco.

TURN 10 (1900AD)
Kumba Saleh's borders expand - finally. Still under threat from Toku's borders tho.
Everything else left as is.

SUMMARY of sorts...

We look to be in good shape. I personally think that the defensive pact with Saladin was a good idea even though we haven't got any direct benefit yet. Besides Toku, who else is going to attack Saladin? No one worthy of even scratching any of his troops. We are relatively safe in that case as we plan to go back to war with Toku soon (...to kill the agreement if necessary). Industrialisation in 12 turns and tanks!

I just wouldn't want it to be the case where Saladin sides with Toku and the only way out for us is to declare and fight both of them at the same time. This is my main reason and I'm sticking to it

I don't think much has changed as such in so far as that our plan is still to wipe Toku off the map and win via domination. Saladin has a lot of culture and modern troops but I feel is still not as greater threat as Japan is.

Good luck Beef. I hope I didn't :smoke: too much here again. :) Now its bedtime for me (way after midnight here).

Edit: And how about I add the save? That might be a good idea.

Sadan01 said:

Nah, I think that's a good idea - it doesn't affect what we want to do at all, and means that we're more likely to be able to choose when we go to war with Toku rather than have him pre-empt our tanks :D

Well, looks like another builder turnset for me then - should be able to do that tomorrow. Sally offering that pact was a bit of a surprise, but I think I would've signed it too. As pling says, we can always cancel it without much of a loss. We're up 'Leccy, but he won't trade it, am I right? Strange. Reckon I'll head for Flight after Ind. (we need Radio too, though, IIRC) with a possible stop for Liberalism (good civics). What tech would the GP help us with? The shrine might be more useful, I'll see.

Right, here we go again - buildup for the final push, methinks. I might not even get to see another save for this game (maybe that's a bit optimistic), which would be nice - I've managed to be up in 3 games at once now!

IHT 1900 AD:

12 turns for Industrialism? There's so much good stuff to research at this point in the game - Democracy, Liberalism, Flight, Artillery. Reckon Ind. is probably right though. However, I'll make a 1 turn stop to snag Liberalism with the help of the great prophet (and realise immediately after that I should've kept him for AFTER it was researched. Meh.)

Turn 1 (1901):

Start a Hindu Mandir in Rome, it'll need the culture boost. Continue research on Industrialism. Adopt both Liberalism civics, Free Religion and Free Speech for the culture, gold and research bonuses. It'll cost us a diplo modifier or two (including a large one with Sally) and experience bonuses (we're mainly building infra anyway for now) but it'll save a small fortune in upkeep if I disband a few obsolete archers and so on. It'll take 2 turns to switch though :(

Turn 2 (1902):

Zzz.

Turn 3 (1903):

A huge jump in our income and a couple of turns off research, baby. Groovy. Unfortunately, Toku is now furious with us - methinks some more units are in order. Disband a bunch of obsolete Archers and bump up science for a bit. Sally's pretty advanced - there's SAM infantry in his cities here :S

Turn 5 (1905):

We've got some oil and uranium hooked up now, which is nice.

Turn 7 (1907):

Start The Pentagon in Guangzhou (our most productive city), due 20 turns.
Broadway's due in a similar time down in the south in former Aztec lands, mainly for the culture boost.

Zzzzz....

Nothing more interesting to report. We've nearly got to tanks and the lands we've recently acquired are pretty much consolidated. I reckon we should wait for the Pentagon to complete then build a load of tanks while researching Flight, but I leave it to the next player to make any final decisions :)

And now it is my turn. Perfect timing, as we've only got one more day left of Midwinter Break, then it's back to school (shudder). Playing tomorrow, unless I am stupid and forget.

Turn 0 (1910 AD):
Well, looks like a builder turn. Industrialism in 2 turns, so once that comes in I’ll build as many tanks as possible. Everything looks fine. I check to make sure we actually have an oil supply, and yes we do. Just wanted to make sure, I’ve been in a no-oil situation before.

Turn 1 (1911 AD):
Work Boat in Tlacopan, start Wealth so I can switch to a Tank the next turn. Same with Cuzco, which finished a Coal Plant. Move the Work Boat towards an oil source, not sure if we can build offshore platforms yet, but it doesn’t hurt to check.

Turn 2 (1912 AD):
Saladin calls up and cancels the Defensive Pact! I let it go, but bad omens… Industrialism comes in, start Communism so we can get State Property and really crank up the science. Queue up or start a Tank in pretty much every single city. I left things to finish if they were important (Pentagon, Broadway) or close to done already. Also we can’t build an offshore platform yet, so I just put the Work Boat to sleep.

Turn 3 (1913 AD):
Snore.

Turn 4 (1914 AD The start of The Great War):
Guangzhou celebrates “We Love the Dictator Day!” which is kind of funny. Otherwise, nothing much happens.

Turn 5 (1915 AD):
Snore.

Turn 6 (1916 AD):
The first Tank is born! Err, created that is. In Angle. Order up another. Also a Tank in Cuzco, make another. Move the tanks to Antium to be in position for the inevitable offensive and have then sleep there.

Turn 7 (1917 AD):
Communism comes in, start Democracy, because Emancipation is going to start worrying us soon, kind of ironic though, don’t you think? I’m going to wait to revolt to State Property until Democracy comes in, so we won’t have to revolt twice.

Turn 8 (1918 AD):
Snore.

Turn 9 (1919 AD):
Tokugawa nabs Versallies, but that’s okay because we weren’t even going for it. Otherwise, snore.

Turn 10 (1920 AD):
Snore.

End of Turn Thoughts:
Tanks are coming in flocks now, so it might be very close to time to eliminate the Japanese with our horrible massive tank gang. Also, Democracy in 1 turn, we should switch to Emancipation and State Property and crank up the science, probably getting Flight next to aid the war effort. Good luck!

Thought I'd better :bump: this to get us back on the main SG page. How you going Pling?

Eek! Sorry guys, we had guests for dinner last night and I totally forgot that I needed to play before then! I should have time to play later today.

No problems there Pling :) I wasn't trying to hurry you up. I wanted us back on the main SG page :D

Sometimes RL does take over, as much as we may want Civ-time (at least for me anyway).

Talking of RL, I won't be able to play this coming Friday and Saturday as I'll be having a "boys" weekend so copious amounts of  will be consumed so I'll be in no shape to sit and play 10 turns. Depends what you folks want to do. Chriseay, I don't mind doing a swap if you want to, or I can swap with Beef instead if you two want to go ahead of me.

In fact, a swap with Beef might be a good idea anyway as tomorrow night (Thursday) is late-night shopping and I need a few things. Beef? Do you mind going ahead of me? I'm sure you won't mind as then you won't have to fix my :smoke: moves

It probably won't make a huge difference, I doubt I'll fancy playing it before Saturday anyway. If I get chance in between I'll grab it, though - might as well keep it moving :)

Regarding Versailles, Tokugawa building it was a good thing, surely - it'll be right where we want it :)

Turn 0 (1920AD):
All looks well - Tanks mostly seem to be gathering in Antium. There's only half a dozen for now, I'll wait for a couple or two more then move on Toku. There seem to be quite a few infantry there too, which I could use to garrison captured cities.

Turn 1 (1921AD):
Democracy discovered, start working on Artillery for the units.
Revolt to State Property and Emancipation:

BeforeCivics.jpg

AfterCivics.jpg

That'll save us some money ... but 2 turns of Anarchy!
Bunch of worker movements, and 2 tanks sent to Antium.

Turn 2 (1922AD):
More worker stuff, waiting on coming out of Anarchy (now have 9 tanks, will invade shortly).

Turn 3 (1923AD):

Aaaand we're out of anarchy, I've notched Culture up to 10%, keep those borders growing :) Kumbei Saleh is revolting, though :(

KumbeiRevolt.jpg

And I declare on Toku & start the tanks rolling towards Tokyo (trying to ease cultural pressure on Kumbei initially).

IBT: Toku attacks the tank stack, kills one tank, does a little damage to the rest.

Turn 4 (1924AD):
I may've misclicked and there may be an automated worker running around, I can't find it though :(
I destroy the troops Toku was using to menace our tanks, splitting the stack a bit in the process. We can see that Tokyo's not that well defended though.
I promoted all the tanks to CityRaider I to heal them a bit.

Turn 5 (1925AD):
Kill more Jap troops. And move tanks in outside Tokyo.

Turn 6 (1926AD):
Sent a tank to re-inforce Death to Azteca. More tanks heading for Antium for second wave stack. Got a clutch of tanks outside Tokyo, think I'll need a few more before taking the city, though.

Turn 7 (1927AD):
Not a lot. :coffee:

Turn 8 (1928AD):
The Pentagon & Broadway are both built :woohoo:

IBT: Tokyo defence tries to shoot down my tanks, and fails.

Turn 9 (1929AD):
Artillery discovered, start to research Flight.
More tanks built.

Turn 10 (1930AD):
And Tokyo is ours!

TokyoCapture.jpg

More troop movement (sending tanks towards Tokyo, most are between Antium & Tokyo).

And a couple of pics to finish up:
