SGn00b - for those new to SG's

Another big graphical glitch - weird. I'll have to try and sort that out, but feel free to skip me for this round.

Eek! :eek: Hope you solve the graphics issues.

So the roster stands as:

Sir Toma (has retired)
pling (on deck)
Chriseay (The Master Trader finished the Incans)
Sadan01 (Just Played)
BeefontheBone (Graphics issues - skipped after a turn)
Admiral Kutzov (has retired)
Pie-es Tasty (Up!)

I got the save. It's kind of weird not going after AK. I might be able to play tonight, or I might play on Friday night. It all depends. Now that finals are over I have way more free time. Onto victory!

I'm treating this inherited turn as Turn 1 this time, because there's so many unmoved units.

Turn 1 (1772 AD):
Looking around, I see that, once again, we have wet paper tissue defences. Especially concerning is the Aztec stack next to Angle... I change from a granary to a Grenider. Teotihuacan looks like it's just about to fall, so I attack. Captured with no casualties.

f94371e8.jpg

I rename it Doom of Azteca, because Teotihuacan is too hard to spell. Tenochtitlan is also weak-looking, so I use a wave of greniders. And by Greniders, I mean cavalry, because I'm tired and I thought all those cavalry were grendiers. Every single unit in the stack attacks, and just manages to capture the city, with only one dead grenider and lots of wounded cavalry. (I had a screenshot, but it didn't take) I rename the city Death to Azteca, because, again, Tenochtitlan is too hard to spell. By the way, both cities will riot for 11 turns. Looks like they have only one city left, unless I'm missing one... I move the wounded units into the captured cities, then turn my sights on the last city.

Turn 2 (1774 AD):
Lots of stuff happen in between turns. First, that stack near Angle bombared defences. Roman revolt in that city way northwest, some Aztec units move into our territory, looking like they're aiming for that Roman city on our borders. Also, Rome and Antium have been captured by the Japanese, doesn't look good for the Romans. Now, onto victory! Looks like our victory march will consist mostly of Cannons, but that's okay! We're striking deeper into the last stronghold of opposition.

Turn 3 (1776 AD):
Macchu Pichu celebrates "We Love the King Day!" More murading Aztec units pillage. Some stuff finished building, a Library in Ollantaytambo, start a Cannon, and a... something in Cuzco (sorry, I forgot what it was!), starts a Cavalry. Now comrades, we strike! And by strike I mean move closer, one square at a time...

Turn 4 (1778 AD):
University finishes in Beijing, starts Cavalry. More Aztec nusances. Ceaser cancells a deal, I don't know why. Doom of Azteca gets almost engulfed by Arabian borders. A rifleman attacks our glorious stack of victory, but loses. To a cannon. That's pretty embarassing. Thus proving that history is on our side! We are destined to crush the Aztecs! I finally see what our wave of unstoppable destruction is up against: Tlatelolco.

1b17cd17.jpg

I'm going to have to rename that one too. I'm thinking something like "Destiny." Hmm... yeah, I like that, Destiny. Onto victory! I notice we have two cavalry, sitting in Texcoco, not participating in the offesive! I wake them, and send them on a mission to destory those that would molest the motherland. Also, Saladin adopts Emancipation, which we don't even have yet, so beware.

Turn 5 (1780 AD):
I meclessly crush the invaders, and unleases flaming pain via cannon onto Tlatelolco, reducing it to 0 in only one turn. I hold off till next turn to capture the city so we can use full force against those who defy our might.

Turn 6 (1782 AD):
Lots of things finish building, too many to keep track of. Mostly new units are ordered up. Steam Power finishes, start Corporation because we desperatly need another trade route to improve our sorry finaces. Now, for the fun part: destroying Azteca. Tlatelolco falls easily, with only one destroyed Cannon. We salute your sacrifice, Comrade. I rename the city Destiny. Unfortunatly the Aztecs still have another city, one which we cannont see. So I call up the Aztecs. And by call them up, I mean don't call them up because they won't talk to us. I'll keep trying.

Turn 7 (1784 AD):
Our vast armies just kind of loiter around, because there's nothing left to kill. I finish off the invaders, and peace is restored. Sort of. Not really.

Turn 8 (1786 AD):
We get Issac Newton in Beijing, yey for us! I put most of our army to sleep, as there's nothing left for them to do. I'm not going to use Issac Newton yet, I'll let the next player do that. My suggestion is to discover Corporation, then use Newton to get halfway to Scientific Method and research that.

Turn 9 (1788 AD):
Cannon finishes in Tiwanaku, start a Hindu Temple, otherwise, snore.

Turn 10 (1790 AD):
Angle finishes Granary, starts an Ironclad, because we need sea power and defense to keep our shores safe from any potential seaborne threat. Cuzco finishes Cavalry, starts Forge. Huamanga finishes Hindu Temple, starts bank.

End of Turn Thoughts:
I might have gone overboard a little with the Communist roleplaying, but what can you do? Feel free to change the names back, I just thought it would be easier to remember them with new, more awsome names.
Teotihuacan = Doom of Azteca
Tenochtitlan = Death to Azteca
Tlatelolco = Destiny
Also, use Issac Newton, and try to find where the Aztecs have hidden their last city.

Good set of turns there Pie. Death to the Aztecs!!! :hammer:
Do you think we have the power to stop the Japanese?

Oooh yay :) Good work on stomping the heathen Aztecs ... I shall try & find their holdout city :crazyeye:

I've got the save now - I think I'm up in the other SG I'm in, too. Though no-one's posted a roster there in a while so I'm currently hunting about in it to see if it's me :) Anyway, hopefully I'll have a chance to play later today, might be tomorrow morning though.

Turn 0 (1790AD):
Workers in Destiny put to sleep until Destiny comes out of Anarchy ... lets hope I remember they're there in a few turns :)
Angle was starving, put the engineer in there back to work
Hey! Ceasar's pleased with us :)

PleasedCeasar.jpg

But he doesn't love us enough to give us his world map :(

NoMapCeasar.jpg

We to have a Great Scientist - Good Enough doesn't have an academy (and is the highest rated science town that doesn't). But I like Pie-es-tasty's suggestion, so I'll hold off with him for a turn (which is when Corporation comes in).
I have this awful feeling that the lost Aztec city is behind Toko's lines - Toko seems to be picking off Aztec cities too, so he may have it part enclosed .. I shall try to move something round Ceasar's lands to see what I can see.

Get two workers out of Shanghai where they're sleeping and go to redo the improvements around Angle

IBT: Saladin offers us Fur for Gold, I accept
Monty wants a peace treaty, I refuse

Turn 1 (1792AD):
Corporation -> Scientific Method

Beijing: Cavalry -> Market (going to alternate infra with military and we need markets)
Shanghai: Cavalry -> Market
Ollythingy: Cannon -> Barracks

Promote the two Cavalry to Flanking I/Sentry I, send them off to Roman lands, to start scouting

Use up Mr Newton on Scientific Method

Turn 2 (1794AD):
Doom of Azteca starts building a Christian Temple. It has happiness issues :(
Death to Azteca starts building a Library, it has fewer happiness issues, but it still has them.

Turn 3 (1796AD):
Scientific Method -> Astronomy (heading for Physics, hopefully first)

Ghangzhou: Cavalry -> Theatre
IronChou: Drydock -> Ironclad
Cuzco: Forge -> Cavalry

A Grenadier has healed, send it off to Destiny which is a bit short on the old garrison type troops (lots of Cavalry though)

Start to poke about in Roman lands looking for the Aztecs.

We have oil, incidentally.

Oil.jpg

IBT: Toko wants us to cancel deals with the Romans, I tell him no.

Turn 4 (1798AD):
Nothing of note

Turn 5 (1800AD):
Texcoco: Barracks -> Cavalry
Vilcas: Granary -> Barracks (we're gonna need some defence here!)
Destiny starts to build a Theatre - food issues, we need culture

One of Monty's ships is hanging about near Destiny. Maybe he's behind Saladin's lines?

MontyFrigate.jpg

Change IronChou over to building a Caravel - it can go through people's lands and also across the ocean

Turn 6 (1802AD):
Ghangzhou: Theatre -> Cavalry
Angle: Ironclad -> Drydock
Ollythingy: Barracks -> Cavalry

Turn 7 (1804AD):
Tiwanaku: Hindu Temple -> Barracks

The Cavalry scouts are stuck.

Turn 8 (1806AD):
Death to Azteca has stopped starving at size 11. Library -> Theatre

There's a Cav unit with movement orders towards a stack I'm building at Texcoco that won't finish till the next turnset, sorry.

Turn 9 (1808AD):
Astronomy -> Physics

IronChou: Caravel -> Grocer
Vilcamba was starving, MM to avoid this. Theatre -> Library

Took research rate down to 60%, most of our gold was used up.

Turn 10 (1810AD):
Good Enough: Cavalry -> Bank
Macchu Picchu: Cavalry -> Bank
Cuzco: Cavalry -> Market
Huamanga: Bank -> Cannon

And a couple of pics:

Suggestions for next player - maybe should make a 10 turn peace treaty with the Aztecs while we look for the city to get rid of war weariness? I think I should've done that at the start, but I figured it would be easier to find them :(

Roster:
Sir Toma (has retired)
pling (just played)
Chriseay (Up!)
Sadan01 (on deck)
BeefontheBone (hopefully fixed his graphics issues?)
Admiral Kutzov (has retired)
Pie-es Tasty

I tried to get a map from Ceaser before, encountered the same problem. I also tried to get a peace treaty while we looked for the lost city of Azteca, but Montezuma wouldn't talk to us.

Good job Pling, go get 'em Chirseay.

Ok Chriseay. I'll try and get to it tonight myself (about 8hrs from now is easier to say than trying to work out comparitive timezones). We could always do a swap so you can still play this round?

My graphics seem to have been sorted out (lord knows why I'd placed the sound card right next to the GPU fan...) so I should be able to play again next time around.

Chriseay, take it mate. RL took over last night and I didn't even get a chance to sit in front of a computer, let alone play Civ. However I have another problem where my girlfriend has decided to organise my weekend so I will not be around Friday or Saturday (with this morning here in Aus being Thursday) so Beef, can I do a swap with you in the roster? I dont know how you are situated for playing over the next few nights but I won't be able to get to the game until Sunday, at the earliest.

So you were getting heat issues? A friend of mine has a older system where the GPU fan blows right onto the CPU. He had to install two new fans to get the case cool enough that the system was stable. Ahh, these newer GPUs love blowing a lot of hot air. Glad you got it fixed mate :thumbsup:

Preturn - Wow, it's been a long time since I've seen this game. I try to find the remaining Aztec city by trading for a map, but no one likes enough to do it. Monty gives us 1 gpt, and his map for peace. This way we'll know where to go to finish him off, at least if Caesar doesn't do it first.
civ4screenshot00785tl.jpg

Turn 2 - Lots of military finishing builds and healing. It's all sleeping in it's y spots until we decide what to do with it. Probably attacking Caesar or Saladin.

Turn 3 - Beijing is focusing on workboats to re hook up our pillaged seafood.

Turn 4 - Monty and Caesar make peace.

Turn 6 - Death to azteca starts the Forbidden Palace, while doom to azteca is in revolt to the arabians. I am building a theatre, but that may be a difficult city to hold.

Turn 10 - There are a bunch of workers going to coal on our border to mine it, they will be there in two turns.

Right now we have a decision on whether to fight another war or build ourselves up a little first. I've started on the buildup, but we do have massive forces, so a war may not be the worst idea.

Monty's a moron, as well as a heathen, it seems :devil:

Think I'd prefer to attack Saladin - Ceasar's the only one that's remotely friendly, so he might even help us with someone else :mischief:

How tough is Caesar? He's the only non-Buddhist left, so clobbering him first might make sense in terms of not antagonising the others. We should build up before taking on Toku though, he's always well-defended.

@Sadan: I think I've got my front case fan going now too, and moving the sound card down has helped a lot. I had to buy a new case not long ago to improve the cooling on this system - an X800 XT is clearly a bit too much for it :)

Caesar isn't too tough, in fact he's getting owned by Toku right now. We might be able to get in on the fun.

Well, in that case I retract my suggestion - better we get him than Toku :ninja:

It's looking like we are the biggest in terms of land area (minimap). Would that be true? I'd have to go with Beef's suggestion about attacking Caesar, being a non-buddhist however we would be that much closer to Toku's borders. When I played my last turns, he was by far the most powerful Civ on the map although I don't how is he in the technology stakes. Maybe a lot of troops, but crappy ancient tech ones.

Beef, are you happy to do the swap? I am at work now and although I am trying my hardest to get my boss into Civ4 :D even though it is not really working, I won't be able to play this until Sunday (GMT +10hrs). I just wish I could play Civ4 at work.

I think it is about time that nVidia and ATI do something about the power consumption of their cards. It is starting to get a little crazy really when you need an extra MOLEX connector from your power supply to plug into the card itself to supply it enough juice? And we aren't even touching on heat-related issues either. Maybe they need to go the way of Intel with their new Core CPUs that consume less power but are more efficient :gripe:
