SGOTM 01 - Fifth Element

Turn 4 70BC
Thebes Axe > Aqueduct (no hammers yet so can be changed) unit costs back at 3gpt
Memphis Library > Granary (part built) put citizens back on to the cottages
Increase science to 80%. All 3 libraries working optimally - Thebes 25, Memphis 15 Moscow 10 beakers. Drama due in 8 but treasury will empty before then and will have to generate some gold.

Send Tiu C2 & Merneith C2 two of our two least experienced chariots 7/10 towards our galley under construction at Elephantine so they can embark on a voyage to Persia. Tiu C2 was unassigned while new Axe fortifies Thebes, Serket I C2 rides the short distance from there to Heliopolis to replace Merneith.

Workboat N locates what appears to be an island off the North coast of Persia.

I forgot to load my screen capture utility so I save the game and restart. I don’t like the resident one as a) I don’t understand why it sometimes displays a pop up window to ask for a filename and sometimes just does the capture automatically and 2) gives you no choice as to which part of the screen to capture. After the reload I take a screenie of Persia.

Turn 5 55bc
Find India. It’s located off the north coast of Persia. Getting very paranoid now about opening trade routes to India. There is a clear coastal path from India via Persia to Egypt and yet there are no Indian cities on the trade routes. Is suspect that although we have OB with Gandhi and with Cyrus they don’t yet have one between themselves. CorrectionI have completely misread the foreign adviser - in Turn 6 realise we do not have OB with India but Cyrus does so that is why we have no trade routes to India.

Elephantine grows to size 3 and starts fishing the clams.

Apprentice completes farm at Thebes will now start another cottage.
Go crazy on sciente this turn 100% rate
Thebes stops building Aqueduct > Research Drama now due in 6 was 7
Memphis stops building Granary > Research
Moscow stops production > research

Turn 6 40BC
Fifth Element converts to Buddhism after it spreads from Pasargadae to Memphis. Despite 1g to India decide to adopt as Memphis needs the +1 happy face right now and puts a slacker to work on the horses for 2F3H1C which is well worth the 1g to Gandhi.
Run out of gold so reduce science to 30% but combined with the beakers from building research and a bit of MM all 3 science cities are producing 15, 10 & 10 beakers. Drama due in 8 but +17 gpt but will soon be able to afford science slider on 100%.
Workboat N can't enter Indian territory check foreign adviser and see we actually don't have OB with India. Decide not to get one as I done want India to the the extra gold for trading longer distances to us rather than Cyrus.

Turn 7 25BC Workboat N reports that India is on the same continent as Cyrus after all but Gandi won’t lose cities to Cyrus unless Cyrus changes to another religion.

Workboat S encounters the icecap and starts searching for the southwest passage.
Heliopolis grows to size 5

Turn 8 10BC

Elephantine galley (chop) > granary
Worker having completed chop moves by road and starts chopping for 44h towards Elephantine’s granary.
Leonardo having finished mine at Heliopolis starts a cottage on the sugar. With the rice and farms planned we don’t need a plantation here. Move a citizen from a forest 1F2H forest to a 4H mine Library due in 5.
Aaron having finished mine at Alexandria prepares to chop its only forest for 44h towards it’s desparately needed granary (size 1 city).
Worker having mined our 2nd gems starts clearing the remaining jungle over the third and final gems. Alexandria’s rice farm could be the next task for Aaron or this unnamed worker.
Load Tiu C2 & Merneith C2 onto our galley with a Persian phrase book.

Turn 9 5AD
Gandhi offers us silk 1 of 3 for gems. I sell him our Iron instead as we are not needing it now and the only use he would have it to build swords which is fine by us.

Set slider to 100% and
Moscow Research > Settler
Thebes Research > Aqueduct
Memphis Research > Granary (grows in 1 to size 7 matching happy faces.)
Drama due in 2 76 gold in treasury at -33gpt
MM Alex for hammers
Workboat N starts heading home to reduce supply costs. Can be used at the new city east of Thebes.

Turn 10 20AD
Worker completes jungle clearance at Alex gems and is moved towards the rice which will be a humongous tile once the granary gets chopped.
Galley rows
Workboat S rounds the cape of ice and locates another Persian city.
Drama due in 1 at 100% but will need to reduce sci after that
There is a spare 7/10 chariot near Alex that could be used as another scout if we can afford the supply (best wait until we have build another city)

Thebes needs to switch production to a Theatre immediately as it still has unhappiness (8 of 7).

@Perugia
Worker having mined our 2nd gems starts clearing the remaining jungle over the third and final gems.
Why do we need to remove the jungle first and then build the mine instead of just building the mine (which should remove jungle automatically)? Do we gain any time doing so?

I believe I am up next... I have the save and can open it successfully. I can't play, however until later Saturday; probably 3pm or so (Pacific time). Any suggestions, input, direction is welcome. For example; what to do with the workboat just off our coast? I take it we don't want to (or can't due to no OB) investigate India further? I also take it we don't want open borders with India since we do not want to help him at all. Drama is 1 turn away... what's next? Stay on the upper pathway and trade for the lower? Perhaps fill in the missing links (e.g. Priesthood)?

Thx!

#gskur 343. Jungle clearance first only as a courtesy to the next player because takes more than 10 turns. There is no time gained. Also this particular tile has a road so the next player might want to mover the worker elsewhare.

OB with India. - Someone playing after you can have chariots lined up and a boat on each Indian coast then we can explore their territory in a short 10 turn OB agreement but not otherwise.

@Goodenuf

I hope you get to read this before you start your turns.

The workboat sailed back from India as it was costing us supply and can't proceed further without OB. It is likely that once the boat gets beyond India (if it can) we would revoke OB. With the other workboat on the far coast its seems sensible to send a galley along the near Indian coast so we can explore any islands beyond. I would send the workboat to our East coast to explore it might find some more land that was not visible from the land. Besides it can eventually settle on the fish 5E 1SE of Thebes when we build a new city there as per earlier discussions.

Please try to consolidate our economy along the following lines

Science cities
Thebes, Memphis, Alexandria
These all have loads of rivers, the palace and/or commerce resources.

Science/Production cities
Moscow, Heliopolis
Moscow is not a pure science city as once Alexandria is fully developed as a science city it shoudl workd alll 3 gem mines.
These cities have build libraries so can benefit from some cottages and research as necesarry but will never provide as many beakers as Thebes, Memphis, Alexandria. What they can do is train a couple of scientists each which will
a) make good use of the existing libraries and
b) generate science GPPs so that we can pop some scientists who can then build Academies in Thebes, Memphis, Alexandria. These will pay back generously as this is not going to be a quick victory.

Production Cities
Elephantine

When dealing with India we need to be careful so as not to let Gandhi get too powerful but note that HC has currency and construction (1680 trade beakers) against Gandhi's metal casting (1007 trade beakers). So the most important thing is to play tech/infrastructure catch up after our military tussle with Catherine

What out for support costs get the most out of every one of our cities - grow small ones quikckly and service the happiness & health of large ones. Have just enough workers/workboats so all citizens are working fully improved tiles.

Research anything that directly meets our needs and is obtainable in a reasonable time. Trade away monopolies wisely and for approx equal deals - If an AI has a monopoly tech they won't trade it so ensure other AIs have the pre-requisites so they might break the monopoly for us.

If loads of AI have a tech we get a discount so consider researching ourselves cheap techs like polytheism, priesthood & archery we can learn now in 2-4 turns, so we could next learn polytheism and then trade our expensive tech (drama) for a subsequent tech (monotheism with the others thrown in).

After polytheism and the drama trade we could research currency ourselves for the gold and happiness boost as only HC has it and we can't get it from him.

Good luck

OK, my 10 turns are complete. Pretty uneventful (i.e. no wars for me this time).

Spoiler :

(20 AD, Turn 0)
Taking a scope of the scene...
Moved Ben Hur off of silver to hill inside our borders. We still can see the Silver hill, so no Barb worries there, and we gain +1 gp for having our unit inside our borders. Currently at 42 gold and -32/turn at 100% research, and 1 turn to Drama. Obviously next turn we have to go down in research.

Elephantine will expand next turn, and we don't have an improved tile to work. We are clearing a forest on the hills, then I suppose we build another mine there. Granary is being built in 8 turns, but will likely be finished when the forest comes down in 3 turns. Health and growth aren't a real problem yet in Elephantine... do we switch to, say, Theatre, after drama? Certainly we do this in Thebes... the natives are restless there.

I certainly can see space for at least 3 more settlers (one of which is being built in Moscow). My tendency would be to build 2 more settlers very soon and take the short term maintenance hit. Long term benefits outweigh this.

I would say the 3 spots (in order of significance) would be on the old russian ruins ESE of Moscow, then on Flood Plain on coast ESE of Thebes, then on river 5W of Thebes (next to cows). A 4th even would be good to get that Silver on the N tip, but not a lot of other decent tiles close to it. Perhaps we just wait until the borders expand enough to get it then...

Oh, and what's the deal with building a cottage on the Sugar in Heliopolis?? He's got 11 turns to go! Seems like a waste of effort to me. I could live with getting rid of the jungle, but health isn't an issue yet. How about building the cottage N of Heliopolis, or building a mine where the ruins are WSW of Heliopolis. I am going to retask him to build a cottage N of Heliopolis (on the grassland).

That's it for turn 0.

(35 AD, Turn 1)
We now have Drama. Of course, now I realize that Theatres gives us +3 culture, but no happiness unless we set the culture slider to at least 10% (can we afford this??). Perhaps not a bad thing to keep people happy. The culture thing on border cities is huge though.

We have a mess of options for research. Among the interesting ones:

Priesthood (2) - Gets us Temples for happiness, but only with a religion. We are Buddhists, so this would be good.
Archery (2) - Do we need archers? Hmm.. probably not.
Philosophy (18) - First to discover gets Taoism. That may be compelling, but 18 turns at 100% means about 30 or more at 60%.
Polytheism (3) - A stepping stone only... probably not a priority.
Calendar (8) - Plantations. Many civs like this one, so perhaps we can trade for it.

I will go for Priesthood for now for the temples. I would expect that we're looking at 4 turns once we drop the research %.

Moving worker to start mining gems next to Alexandria.
Workboat continues voyage around Persia. We see the end of Persian territory and the start of Indian territory.
I presume the galley-full of units is for exploring Persia? I will move them south for a more extensive inland peek.

We are at 10 gold, -2/turn and 60%. Priesthood is still there in 2 turns.

(50 AD, Turn 2)
Workboat continues exploring to its furthest extent before entering Indian waters.
Leonardo starts cottage N of Heliopolis (6 turns).
Unnamed worker starts on gems mine W of Alexandria (6 turns).

(65 AD, Turn 3)
Priesthood is in now. Calendar is 12 turns out, and gives us Plantations (for all that sugar), plus points us towards Astronomy. However, the other civs love this one... we may be able to trade for it. I'm going to go with Currency (15 turns) for now, and see if we can do some trading now.
Memphis finishes Granary, so we start on Temple. We are at 7/7 for happiness there, and growth is in 7 turns, and temple is ready in 5. No brainer here.
Thebes is another story. It is already unhappy (by 1) and is one turn from growth. We can't build a Temple yet since Buddhism has not landed there yet. Aqueduct is being built now, but is 8 turns out. I will leave it there for now, but will watch for spreading religion.
Elephantine has just found religion! We need revival in Thebes!
Going to take 2nd workboat thru the canal to peek at the unexplored right coast below the mountain.

(80 AD, Turn 4)
Troops have landed in Persia for a little look-see.
Heliopolis builds library and now starts on Settler.
Apprentice has finished cottage and will look for some other gainful employment in the lumber industry (chopping next to Thebes).
Aaron starts on road to rice SW of Alexandria.
Galley takes a peek S of Moscow to see if there's something interesting down there.

(95 AD, Turn 5)
Both Ghandi and Cyrus are willing to trade Calendar, but we ain't got anything that they want. They don't have Drama, but all we can get for it is Archery. Ghandi has 3 other techs that he's not willing to part with. Cyrus has none.
Galley doesn't find a heck of a lot S of Moscow. Chariot explorer discovers interior Persian city of Bactra, but it's only size 2. They are certainly a backward nation, but they seem to have quite a few spearman around for defense. Obviously the anti-chariot stance. We may want to research Archery and Horseback riding soon for horse archers.

We are at 2 gold, +5/turn, 50% research, and 16 turns to Currency.

(110 AD, Turn 6)
Ghandi would like Open Borders... Ummm.... no.
Argentina just scored to make it 2 - NIL !! (It should be 3 - NIL...that other one was over the line...). OOps hang on... I'm off track now... time to concentrate...
More exploring in Persia, but not much to report.
A couple of GPs born in distant lands. One born in Persepolis (our Persian friends).
Alexandria was working on a workboat... we currently have a bit of a surplus in them. Switched to lighthouse to encourage city growth.

(125 AD, Turn 7)
Taoism has been found in a distant land! Glad we didn't go down that road. Someone has Philosophy now.
Exploring chariot discovers Persian city of Susa, but it's right up against the border of India... so Persia has a culture problem. 2 defending archers here. I'm thinking if Persia ever goes to war with India, that Persia is in trouble. Perhaps we go first?? our only issue is getting troops over.
Settler in Moscow has been built. I'm taking him E to the ruins. One thing I don't like about the ruins location is that its a desert tile. The location for the rest of the tiles is good, but the city site sucks. Perhaps we deal with a bit of overlap and settle 1 N of ruins to get lots of forested hill tiles. We don't get the copper tile, though, with this location.

(140 AD, Turn 8)
Cyrus converts to Judaism. Memphis finishes the Buddhist temple. I'm thinking the Buddhist monestary will be next (9 turns) due to +2 culture and +10% beakers. Both are needed here. Plus we can build missionaries then to spread the religion. Growth is 2 turns away, and we can go 1 more for happiness and health in Memphis.
Leonardo finishes cottage, and starts chopping jungle next to Heliopolis.
The unnamed worker finished gem mines and moves SE to build a road out to the new city site.

(155 AD, Turn 9)
Pi-Ramesses has been built on the ruin's square (ruins pillaged first). Decided to go with desert location; the surroundings are too good. Started with Theatre (19 turns) to get the culture going.
We now have a million souls.
Thebes finished aqueduct. I've started on Hanging Gardens (16 turns) due to culture and health bonuses, plus we need something for GPs. Will switch to Temple if/when Thebes finds a religion.
Ivory Coast Goooooooaaaaal!!! We have a game! Oops, concentrate....

(170 AD, Turn 10)
Workboat arrives to dark area SE of Heliopolis... doesn't find too much. :(
Not much else happening right now.

@Perugia... started before seeing your entry... sorry. No serious deviation from what you stated though. We did research Drama, then Priesthood, tnen started on Currency. It makes sense to stop there and go back and do Archery and Poly... they are both short term research items.

Cash flow is a bit of an issue; we're at 16 gold, -1/turn and 50% research, 11 turns to Currency. Some of that of course is due to a new city. That should correct itself soon enough. There is another settler in the hopper in Heliopolis, plus we have Hanging Gardens being built in Thebes (which has 2 angry citizens). We need to get Buddhism in Thebes so we can get a temple built and deal with that issue. We could pop rush as well if needed.

Most of Persia is now explored, and there's not much there. We could think about taking them out. If so, we need a couple more galleys and a lot more military. I have 2 chariots roaming Persia. They have finished exploring there and should be picked up by the galley and brought home for a savings in support cost.

Game is now uploaded; Here's the link... http://gotm.civfanatics.net/saves/civ4sgotm1/Fifth_Element_SG001_AD0170_01.Civ4SavedGame

NEXT!!

World Cup Soccer in the morning... Stanley Cup hockey in the evening. A fine time of year it is!

Canadians actually! Look at his moniker . Mind you British Columbians ought to know better, must be the West Coast influence.

Both of you have one on me while watching .

I've been traveling and out of contact this last week. Picking up the latest save, I think we've made good progress, although there are dark clouds on our horizon. I'm not liking HC's scary tech lead or Gandhi's point lead.

Coming in fresh made me think about our strategy, short and mid term.

For the short term, it looks like we continue to build out our island and create a viable economy. This means we need money, happiness and food, which suggests:

1. Courthouses - COL
2. Bureaucracy and irrigation - CS (which will also let us build macemen when we have machinery)
3. Spread Buddhism (I'm guessing we want to avoid Judaism as it helps Gandhi, assuming he's built a shrine)
4. Colosseums - Construction (which will also help us prepare for war by getting catapults)
5. Sugar plantations give happiness - Calendar (also puts us on the path for astronomy)

In the mid term, I think we need to get rid of Cyrus, although as I take a closer look, conquering Persia will give us one crappy little country, crowded by Gandhi and not very productive. Unfortunately, unless someone else appears within galley reach in our NE corner or along Gandhi's border, Cyrus will be our only viable target for a long time. Plus, we should try to take him before Gandhi does anyways.

One potential upside is that if we get Persepolis, we get Buddhism's holy city, which can earn us some coin. By the way, have you ever seen a crummier capitol? Talk about isolated in the middle of nowhere! The entire country is sad, but unless we take it, Gandhi will, making the game a lot harder.

After pursuing the above research path, we might want to beeline towards astronomy, which we'll need to travel afar. Along the way, this gets us some excellent techs, including Metal Casting and Machinery.

Is Doom_Train up?

@goodenuf 327
My comments on the turnset.

I am dissapointed with the forest chop at Thebes. This is a mistake on 2 counts 1) we need the +2 health to counteract the -2 from the floodplains. 2) We can get the health back from the HG but if the chop had been reserved for that it would have given us 90 hammers instead of the 44 actually received due to the bonus effect of the stone quarry.

Apprentice seems ready to chop another forest 1NW of Thebes, don't do it!

CAN I REQUEST THE NEXT PLAYER NOT DO THIS. Since there are now an odd number of forests the next AND ONLY one to be chopped should be the one 1W 1SW of Thebes. This will open a short 2 tile irrigation route to the rice. Apprentice can then farm the gap.

Memphis can shave a turn of the Monastery by MM form cottage to forest. We need this ASAP for three reasons 1) +10% science 2) extra culture speeding expansion to the silver tile 3) Get a Missionary soonest to convert Thebes. Whenever a cultural improvement is available Memphis should build one. It should also build a Theatre and work an Artist for the culture bonus.

I don't want the HG built at Thebes. Thebes should focus on Great Artist points. I think we should build Mine the two plains hills at Memphis, build an aqueduct and then the Hanging Gardens there. This is because there are 4 forests 3 tiles away from Memphis that can be chopped and each will give 90 hammers which means we can build HG almost instantly if we get the workers up there.

We should resarch something that when added to Drama will be tradable for Calendar + Archery. Literature is about the right price.

Soccer?! Hmph. Americans! ;)

Sorry... North Americans simply can't bring themselves to give the name of a MAN'S sport (Football) to a GIRL'S game (Soccer).

I'm sure you understand.

Perugia... why do we want to focus on GA? Is it your thinking to expand our borders via the culture bombs they provide? Personally, I perfer GE, as I think they are much more useful for grabbing wonders (in this case I would be stockpiling them for eiffel tower (+50% culture in every city) and of course, the UN. This strategy optimally needs 4 GE.), although their utility tends to diminish. I seldom use GA, and maybe I don't fully appreciate their value.

Agree on the forest chop at Thebes... this is something I mentioned very early in the game. Maybe if we don't improve the tile, a forest will regrow there.

We absolutely need courthouses... they will give us a huge gold boost.

A war vs Cyrus could go very badly against us at this point, even if we win. Cyrus's border cities with Ghandi will be overwhelmed by his culture when we take them, and we'll lose them, making Ghandi bigger. This may be a good place to use the aforementioned GA. If we go to war with Cyrus, we should have the GA to bomb the border cities, or leave them until we do, even if we take everything else.

Can I get some screenies?

@Merum: I agree that a war with Cyrus would not go well for us today. But as a mid-term strategy, it may be our best option.

Force of habit re: Soccer vs Football. If 'Football' is mentioned at home, it's assumed the North American version (such bufoons we are). Our Canadian 'football' season starts this week, so it's on the mind, too. Even us West-Coasters have this habit.

The Stanley Cup, however, is at the forefront of our sports world this week. Go Oilers!

Point taken re: the forest chop... I suppose that's what learning the intricacies of this game is all about. However, (although I really do like GAs for culture bombing), I tend to prefer GEs so I can get wonders built ... similar stance to Merum's comment. Having HG in Memphis is fine, too, if we want to go that way. The Monestary under way there now is an important one, though, and I'm guessing that HG is likely being built by someone by now, so the earlier we get started on it the better.

I am interested in the Globe Theatre primarily for its effect of removing all unhappiness in a single city. I was not actually much interested in GA. BUt I agree about using the GA on the Persian border cities as a mid-term strategy. Sounds effective - it's what GA are good for apart from Cultural Victory.

As previously posted I think the first GPP or 2 we should generate is a GS using a Library or two. The we can build an Academy or two. I'm all for GE as well especially for rushing the UN.

HG will be OK if we chop those 4 forests 3 tiles distant from Memphis all in one go to complete it in one turn. The AI will not do this so we can catch up.
I have not looked at Persia in detail to see what we gain from the other cities. Will do and post the screenies for Merum. Any happiness resources there?

Goodenuf, why did you initially dislike the desert tile E of Moscow. I find that founding on a desert is its best use as the city tile produces the same as a grassland or plains.

Yep - Can't disagree that courthouses would be good. Edit We could also do with Caravels to explore.

Doom_Train I think you could prepare an expedition to India if you have say 2 chariots on the border and a boat on each coast ready to take advantage of a 10 turn OB agreement.

Perugia said:

Yes, I did not realize this and was pleasantly surprised when I built it there. Turns out to be the best place. Live and learn.

How about those Aussies this morning! I left for work just after they tied it; then later discovered that I missed the best 10 minutes of the match. At least they recovered from that brutal call on the Japan goal.

@Merum

American football? A man's game? Oh dear. For those who think grabbing a ball and violently crashing into other men repeatedly is the epitome of masculinity, there is indeed a sport available. Its called Rugby, and it doesn't involve body armour. ;)

Re: Great People.

Getting an Academy or two going would definitely be an excellent idea. For those who have experience of diplo victory, roughly how long does it take to get to Mass Media? Its one I generally ignore.

@ Goodenuf. Yep SGOTM is all about learning (they say -this is only my second one).

I'm off to watch Italy vs Ghana live now and will catch Oz vs the Japs on the highlights plus USA vs Czech Republic (Oh Dear!).

@Dolphan - could not agree more about Rugby Football.

With a decent science base, its quite easy to beeline for Mass Media from Printing Press via Scientific Method and if you are first to Physics then the Great Scientist can be used to research most of electricity and Mass Media itself can be rushed with a couple of GAs. Its worth including Astronomy as you get a discount off Sci Method and can build Observatories for another +25% science. Education it not usually necessary and can be picked up in Trade so the Universities can be built as well for their science boost. Once MM is researched the GE can rush the UN in a turn.

Then there is a hiatus while the preliminary votes go through and in that time you increase population as fast as possible for more voting power. Cities are important to provide the food & health to gorw the voter base. You should also war with your closest rival or get the AI to do it if he is Gandhi to reduce his votes.

OK Had a look at the save in more detail and posted the screenies for Merum.

Alexandria now has its Granary so we should increase food excess from 1 to 2 by moving the second citizen off the grassland hill and onto the gems. A farm on the rice would be good.

Pi-Ramesses has just been founded on the coast and is building a Theatre. I prefer this location to the landlocked site I had suggested earlier as we could do with some shipbuilding capability on the East coast. The Theater is not yet needed as we are creative the border will grow to include the copper all by itself. I would go for a granary myself.

Moscow has growth in 2 granary in 3 with +6 food. Might be better to work the Hamlet at the moment inplace of the farmed grassland. There will still be +5 food.
5thele_4_001.jpg

Here is the other good East coast site 3W1SW of Thebes with 2 resources, discussed earlier. The settler from Heliopolis can go there.
5thele_4_004.jpg

Memphis, Silver and the 4 choppable forests at distance 3.
5thele_4_005.jpg

Elephantine is working an unimproved grassland, I would work the coast until the cottage is complete in 6 turns.
