SGOTM 01 - V Q

Hey about the religion, I mentioned it in my report too. The dates are off on the official turn log too and it seems like the turn log skipped the beginning turns.

I wouldn't worry about getting archery. Instead our next city should be in the copper and then we can build spearmen or axeman to protect the cities for now until we can extort archery and others from Cathy or trade with the other civs we encounter.

As for defense, since St. Petersburg can serve as a road block and with a constant stream of chariots we shouldn't have to worry too much about defense, although keeping two chariots there would be good until the russians are almost finished.

Oh also the copper isn't being watched so sending a warrior or chariot over to check and see if its not being worked again is a good idea. If you plan on taking Rostov right away, its not a problem but if you wait for at least 6 chariots might want to make sure they don't hook up the copper.

Does Memphis have enough food to sustain those hills? We should irrigate if needed....

Yes it does with 1 food left over to grow IIRC. It is one away from the happiness limit too. The cows generate a lot of food as well as hammers so that helped a lot.

I have thought about it a little. Actually we are first in the 'rotation'. So anything we persive as happening 'this' turn, in regards of building a wonder or founding a religion. It actually happened the previous turn.

Agree, Axe are just as effective... As are some warriors...

Thats hoping Cathy doesnt have another source of Copper :(

Good I was just wondering....

Am I up for 20 or 10 turns?

As Greyfox mentioned, 20 turns for all the first round.

What does everyone think would be a good turnset after this round? This being Epic, 10 turns doesn't get much done, unless in a war.

We could go to 15 turns (might end on some screwy years) or even stay at 20 for another round?

I'll like to hear from all. I can't really comment on the pace right now, since all I did was the start...

I would suggest 15 turns. I'm guessing after the next turnset we might have one captured city and another city founded which will slow the pace a bit. Although if we keep it at 20 turns, it would help us to finish the game faster than everyone else, if that's what we are aiming for (you know with our names being VQ).

In Epic everything is times 1.5 right? Atleast worker turns are... lets keep the set(s) at that ....

As for Cathy, take Petersburg and remove Rostov. Then peace for some techs? Maybe pillage a little first?

Also I would build an additional warrior or two before hooking up any bronze or Iron just for cheap defense....

one of the next techs would be Iron I think for chopping Jungle?! And Getting Math? For the extra Great engineer points of the Gardens?

Do we really want to leave Cathy with just one (prime real estate) city? I rather just eliminate her -- especially before she meets other Civs. Remember, she might get friendly with one of them, and when we do decide to take her out -- BAM -4 You Declared on Our Friend!

Moscow will probably have heavy defenses and will have high Cultural aid... Possibly to much for us to handle any time soon.

Re: this pic View attachment 126778 taken by eektor, we can see St. Petersburg and Rostov. Moscow is offcourse there and where is Novgorod?? Yeah...
Assuming the culture on the sugar is indeed from Moscow, there must be another city around due south of Petersburg somewhere?!

So we have 2 more cities to go after Petersburg.
1) We try to find Novgorod (have to go around? Moscow? possibly with lots of jungle losing the 2 move of the chariot), take/raze it and see where we are
2) We pause after Petersburg for 10 turns (not all that much I think), building some Axe (4?) and more sacrificial Chariots... And we push hard thru Moscow and get Novgorod easy like.

We want to keep both Moscow (capitol is allways nice) and petersburg. Then we want to build 2 more cities I think.
1) Copper town
2) Fish/clam town

This means we will have
1)Thebes
2)Memphis
3)Petersburg
4)Moscow
5) and 6)

which I think will be the limit ? Untill we can get to CoL?

We have plenty of workers, so cottage away I say... We need the Coin :)

Oh I forget to mention, I dont like keeping Petersburg...

I would much prefer to develop that patch of desert into something usefull (like a city) It would grab everything and be a 'bridge' for our ships in the future.

Alltho I dont know how we would fill out our cities...

Also Petersburg looks like a defenders nightmare... Tho its on a hill (which is nice, but for now no good to our chariots) it is also surrounded by jungle (by the looks of it) possibly hills? Nice terrain for attackers from (presumed to be) Moscow to use to their defensive bonus which we dont get with the Chariots....

Just my 2cnt (which must be adding up by now to 2 dollar?? But wurth less than nothing probably...)

It's a tradeoff: workable tile vs the cost of building another settler, I think it's worth keeping St. Pete's rather than worrying about one tile since I'm of the opinion most cities aren't going to be hitting size 21 anyway.

EDIT: I'm concerned that Cathy had space for another city ... I wonder ... can anyone look at the diplomacy screen? Has Cathy met Huyana yet?

SECOND EDIT: That is a good point about the desert tile being a bridge ... hmm ... maybe we should raze St. Pete's ... :hmm:

Or (and I shudder to say this) drop a token city on the desert with no intention of it ever doing much of anything beside acting as a canal.... I would demand it be named Nara of course.

:crazyeye:   :aargh: :dubious:
A full city just for the sake of a canal??? Not if it were up to me...

Nara? I have seen this name around a couple of times now. Whats up with Nara?

Nara.... In a previous VQ game, one of our players chose to keep the city of Nara instead of raizing it to the ground - even though I had left a sizable armed force outside it and instructions to raize it down! It was in very close proximity to another much more developed and robust city. It (imo) brought nothing to the table.

As it works out, in that game I was the last player with meaningful turns and I offered two saves up to the next player (the one guilty of keeping Nara). One where Nara had mysteriously revolted over to the enemy and another where it was still part of the empire.

Nara is what I now call all cities that have no reason for existing in my grand dot map in the sky (tm).

For more information check out VQ04 - Revenge. You can get the whole story there.

Edit: Since I don't want to make another post, GreyFox how do you make those dotmaps? I think they are the best looking ones I've seen.

The answer ... is No.

Hello. Sorry for interupting, but I'm cheering for you guys and I just wanted you to know what that. I'll be like a private male cheerleader :D
You go guys!

@saint: Now, why would we be intrigued by a male cheerleader? Ccould you just pretend to be female? j/k, thanks for the support!

On BlueDot and St-Petersburg
My suggestion will be to keep St Petersburg and still build BlueDot at the desert tile. What's the problem with that? Yeah, overlap ... But I don't give a damn about city overlap. When placing cities, that is always the last factor I will consider (except when playing VQ02, of-course! :D)

The idea behind early rush is not only to kill a potential enemy. But also to gain from it. If we continue to raze cities this early, might as well not rush city. Doing us no good, sacrificing our growth and economy for nothing. I would strongly advocating keeping St. Petersburg.

@eektor: I use the Gimp (open-source, photoshop-like, image manipulation program). It is actually quite nice, because each BFC can be placed on a separate layer, so you can actually move the BFC around to see the effect.

Oh sure now you tell me!!

I may have been a bit greedy, but I'll leave it to the team to decide how much they enjoy my style.

Turn 0:
My first of many :coffee:
(BTW Memphis built WCs almost the entirety of my turn set)

Turn 1:
civ4screenshot00032gq.jpg

It did cost us two WCs tho. Yes I raized that bad boy to the ground.

Turn 2 - 6:
:coffee:
and I notice that Cathy must have copper somewhere..
civ4screenshot00056me.jpg

Turn 7:
I see a Chariot appear in St. Pete...

Turn 8:
afor mentioned Chariot promotes our most advanced WC to level 3.
Oracle is BIFAL

Turn 9:
Cathy comes along offering peace for nothing. Oh heck NO (Alphabet due in 2 turns)

Turn 10:
A suddenly brave axe attacks out of St. Pete and kills our (fully healed) senior WC.

Turn 11:
It would be 6 Fully healed and twice promoted WCs going up against 20% defense, 3 archers (2 with city D1) + 1 Spear (combat 1) + 1 axe (.9 health....). I want to badly....

Turn 12:
:coffee:

Turn 13:
A chariot attempts to go past our blockade force at St. Pete. He dies. I'll have to attack soon, the stack at St. Pete is just taunting me.

Turn 14:
I check the defenses one last time:
civ4screenshot00062kb.jpg

:goodjob:
OMG, I've checked the defense each turn and saw it growing for a counter attack. Go Go Go :ninja:

The screen shot didn't save (sorry), but that spearman rocked our world hard. If you throw enough horses at a spear, it gets dull eventually. We take St. Pete, gaining a worker and 102g for our treasury (running 100% research of course). I choose to raize it because that stack that left could easily recapture and I have no desire to fight that battle. (Sorry Nara)

I check Cathy and she will give us Mysticism, Fishing, and Archery for peace. She has Iron Working and Mathematics. I decided not to take it so that my WCs could more fully explore her lands and perhaps pillage some key resources. Archery is due in 2 turns for us anyway.

Our reinforcements are coming faster because I've roaded most of the way down to the battlefront. (Cottages around Thebes and mines around memphis).

Turn 15 - 17:
Mostly :coffee: as our scouting WC takes out a few archers and gets a decent amount south.
Parthenon BIFAL

Turn 18: Cathy decides to found Yarsolov a bit further south (since I'm camping the hill.
civ4screenshot00080qg.jpg

Turn 19:
I attack and kill the defenders. Yarsolov autoraizes to the ground (we do get 3g for that and I pillage 4 more g for the horse pasture)

Turn 20:
Just pushing further as I can.
Cathy's offer for peace (when I dialed her up):
civ4screenshot00093hl.jpg

The settler is due in 2 turns out of Thebes (can whip for 1 pop)
A library is due in 3 from Memphis (can whip for 2 pop). You can also switch to an archer which would come in 3 turns as well.

We've got 4 WCs and 1 warrior down south, enough to hold a blockade until we get a real city settle on the ithsmus.

Iron working currently being researched, but due in 12 turns even at 100% research (71 g @ -5 per turn).

Memphis is now unhappy by 1 thanks to WW.

Here's two pics of the current world. I've roaded to most of the possible city sites in the south.
civ4screenshot00101ja.jpg

civ4screenshot00111sk.jpg

Well... there it is. Cathy is knocked down (but burning 3 cities means we basically have another Always War civ now). With her having copper somewhere else, I don't know that our WCs are going to be much more effective. The one glance I got of Moscow had it with 4 archers, so she might be thin. Trouble is all the jungle around her. Our WC's advantage of speed is gone there. I don't think she has any more horses tho.

I'd suggest we go on a massive building spree and prepare for our first naval meeting. We can take Cathy off the board when it makes more sense.

The autogen log: btw its pretty huge cause of the combat results.

The Save

Okay ... so you razed 3 cities and take peace. Good job capturing 3 cities. I understand the need to raze each of the 3 cities.

But as I said, it does us not much good except to kill off a potential enemy. We don't get a higher score, we are not one step close to domination or diplomatic victory.

So, the next step, IMHO, is to pump out settlers and fill in the space created before someone else does it. With spears appearing, we can say goodbye to our UU, and start concentrating on other more useful units.

I see we have learnt archery. My humble opion is that we need to go fishing and sailing. Since we have stone, may try the Great Lighthouse. Thereafter Iron-Working / Metal-Casting for military route. Else go Writing and Literature for the Great Library.
