SGOTM 03 - Geezers

Hatty's forces in Alexandria are looking decidedly weak (2.9-strength mace, 1.5-strength longbow). I wonder if she's losing the Huayna war (if so she might not be in the running for being our opponent in the diplo vote much longer). That also means if we declare on Huayna, we might be in the running to pick up a recently captured ex-Egypt city without upsetting Hatty! I might user our OB with Hatty to station a couple of troops round there just in case the opportunity arises...
Huayna can reach our Eastern shores so a couple frigates should watch him also:crazyeye: who can we rely on?:) :crazyeye:

Just make sure we've still got some defence on the homeland. Apart from Toku I'm not that convinced about Julius atm.

I second Dagnabit's views on taking out Mao and keeping an eye on Huayna. I would also feel happier about having our troops reasonably near to the homeland rather than scattered about the world.

(2 turns into my turnset: )

Geezers 594 votes of 1112 (444 required) Elected.
Votes for Geezers:
198 Geezers
82 Hatty
73 Julius
68 Cyrus
68 Mansa
53 Vicky
52 Gandhi

Votes for Monty:
97 Monty
92 Toku
79 Huayna
71 Kublai
33 Louis
25 Saladin
22 Mao

Abstentions:
51 Issy
48 Washington

I've uploaded the intermediate save (it's the 1676 one) in case anyone wants to look at it in the light of the figures. My feeling is we can't yet do anything about the diplo opponent anyway since Toku still refuses to talk, so for now carry on with the war against Mao (I declared on him) and with Huayna (getting troops into place ready to declare. As I predictedHuayna has taken Alexandria giving us a possible opening). Obviously the big question is whether we give Toku Hittite as soon as he is willing to talk.

Whether or not Toku wants to talk is irrelevant. If we want him to have Hittite then we move our troops out when he next attacks and let him 'capture' it. I think we should let Toku have it as he's only 5 votes behind Monty.

At present we need 689 votes for diplo victory so we're 95 votes short. Getting Monty's 97 votes would make a big difference given that some of the AI who voted us in for SecGen may not vote for diplo victory.

Interesting to note that Hatty's got the most votes. We certainly don't want her to lose any more cities. A moot point if we should just recapture her cities and keep them or if we should gift them back.

Hmmm. Looking at it further it seems that Huayna's more advanced than we are. This could be quite expensive.

Can I just make a further plea for running the culture slider. We already have unhappy cities and that's before WW kicks in.

if we make sure Hittite is at least 5 pop, then why not abandon it for Toku to take? Also, if Toku becomes willing to talk before the election, why not offer him Hittite and 1 other city in peace...that would put Toku well ahead of Monty, and gain us Monty's 97 votes :) If we can somehow keep the votes of the people that put us in the SecGen position, then we'd have the win right there.

That's another good reason to use the culture slider. Hittite is currently unhappy. Running culture at 10%, although I think 20% would be better for the rest of our cities, would be enough for it to grow to 5 in six to seven turns depending on MMing.

I'm not certain the AI will accept another city at a distance from it although I suppose it's worth trying.

What other city? I don't think we have any in Moscovy Isle I'd give up. I doubt he would take any Mao tundra cities but they would be all I'd offer.

Something must have happened to Hattie, Her votes don't reflect her Pop from a couple turns ago (down by about 10). Montie and Toku seem in line. Did she lose a city to Hauyana?

Does this answer your question? :p :D

I'm monitoring the culture slider, but the first couple of turns we had relatively few unhappy cities it would help with. I'm not just looking at whether a city is unhappy, I'm looking at whether removing the unhappiness will actually make it grow in a reasonable time. The gold we're currently getting is extremely useful for buying us more units, which could give us a lot of extra pop soon ;)

I agree with the culture slider as well...just 10% will put all but 3 cities completely out of unhappiness. Additionally, Hittite isn't growing right now, but if we put the culture slider up to 10%, it will grow quickly(5 turns).

Also, Guanzhou is on citizen automation? why is that?

Once we capture a city that gives us extra votes in the bag. ISTM the only advantage in giving it back to Hattie is if the city is starving in our hands due to pressure from Hattie's culture AND we have a virtual guarantee that Hattie will vote for us (at present I'd say she's very iffy)

While lots of us are here: Has anyone had a chance to try adding up city's populations to see if the votes cast are the exact sums of city sizes or not?

not quite lol, I'm monitoring the forums while doing my calculus homework...not conducive to counting city pops ;)

I can make things easier with Huayna by bribing Monty to declare war on Huayna, but he wants 3 techs for it (which means we'll have to give him either biology or steel, I'm not keen on passing on either of those to him)

(I'm veeeeeeery slowly playing turns posting in case anyone around wants to give input :-) )

I don't mind giving Monty steel, but I'm totally against him getting Biology, that would completely nullify any chance of him not being our opponent.

Bad News Guys: We're miles away:

327 votes (required 696 of 1124)
Votes for us (with peoples attitude to us):
204 Geezers
69 Mansa (+12, friendly)
54 Gandhi (+13, friendly)

Votes for Monty:
98 Monty (+10, pleased)

Abstentions
70 Cyrus (+3, cautious)
82 Hatty (+5, pleased)
73 Julius (+5, cautious)
54 Vicky (+10, pleased)
90 Toku (-14, furious)
52 Issy (+3, cautious)
25 Saladin (-7, furious)
33 Louis (-10, furious)
49 Washington (+4, cautious)
79 Huayna (-12, furious)
73 Kublai (-3, annoyed)
19 Mao (-15, furious)

I think we're going to have to face it: Monty is drawing ahead of Toku in pop, whatever we do he's going to be our opponent. That result also makes me think we should convert to Christianity to see if we can get Vicky/Julius on board (and to reduce risk of Julius suddenly backstabbing us, as he's now cautious, still has too much on his hands, and still has that huge invasion force in Cumae). If we can get Julius and Vicky on-side and take out Mao, Huayna and Toku, we'll be in the right ballpark.
