SGOTM 03 - Smurkz

Unless I missed something, it appears we may have the earliest SS date. This is what I do know:

Space:
1855 Pioneer Knights
1857 New Warlords

Chokonuts appear to be going for SS, but have already passed our date. I didn't pay attention to teams who were already passed ours by a while.

What's a 'backdoor diplo' win? I noticed in, I think, CVR-F's log that they built the UN in a city then gifted that city to an AI. I didn't go through their whole thread, I just read that last page or so. Is that what it is? If so, how does that help a team's cause? I'd never even think of considering that.

Cheers,
B

Most teams seem to have gone for Diplo, and of course then beat us by far. But I found a comment in MW's thread that they wondered why we didn't go for MM at the point of divergence since we would probably have beaten them then, which would have meant a silver. Oh well. It seems we'll be the fastest space farers at any rate. :D :goodjob:
IIRC, the musing in the MW thread about you guys not going for MM and the UN as you approached it was mine (Gypsy Kings and Murky Waters fought the trash wars in their and our threads for a while). I thought you could get it built in good time, and your diplo screen at the time was reasonable, something that crafty shared wars might be able to mobilize in your favor. You might have made a run at the bronze if you had done that.

But congrats on a very respectable launch date! :goodjob:

Backdoor diplo, as I understand it, is when you win because you yourself own 62% of the votes ... no one has to like you. Diplomacy by conquest! :D

The UN giveaway idea is to ensure that a weak civ is the voting rival (sometimes a good friend, who would otherwise vote for you, is number 2 and is the rival if you keep the UN). Or to have the rival be a different religion, if the world is split into religious blocks (free religion can undo that pretty quickly, though).
