SGOTM 03 - Team One

We have 2 workers building irrigation outside the fat cross at Argos/Shanghai.
I think this is to spread irrigation to our northern city. Other than that I agree with everything in the previous post.

I guess I agree. A granary makes more sense if we want to go for the vote. However I am not sure we should neglect our economy. The game might last longer than we want. Also maintenance will start adding up once we start capturing Aztec cities.

I am ok with the other points.

Mansa is willing to trade Gunpowder. I didn't do it thinking he was already advanced enough. I think we'll be able to trade it from someone else soon.

T0: Bribe Isabella to war with Monte(we get 110 gold, she gets Music, CS).
Change Corinth to Theater, Knossos to Granary. MM for more food. Revolt to Buddhism(1 turn).

I have decided to land at Monte's capital and take whatever losses we must.

More to follow... Please comment as I proceed.

If we land directly outside his capital we will need to add several pikeman to the invasion force. They will be the only effective counter we have to his war elephants.

mdy, I have disembarked several trebuchets and loaded 3 maces instead. What do you think of this solution to the elephant problem?

T1: Cyrus is brought to friendly by selling him a tech. He will still not attack Monte because "We will not betray our close friends". Huyana still says "We just don't like you enough". Hmmm...

T2: Whip Corinth, whip Knossos.

T3: zzz

Given that Monty`s war elephants are promoted combat 1/2 and combat 1/and hock and that our maces mainly have city raider promotions, I fear the maces will probably all be killed by the elephants.

Huyana Capec will attack Monty once he is friendly. We just need to wait for enough positive modifiers to accumulate. This could be speeded up by switching temporairly to hereditary rule.

I find it surprising that Cyrus won`t betray close friends. He is only at cautious towards Monty in the 1310 save. Has this changed?

Still only cautious. He will attack Victoria, to whom he is annoyed...

Maybe I should land on the hills to the south and see if he attacks... We could also start by taking the Island city.

I`ve just checked the spreadsheet. Cyrus and H.C. won`t attak monty because they both like him too much. Bribing them both into war with Victoria does appear doable. When we joined in the war (which could be left a few turns) the only significant people we would pick up a -1 modifier are Gandi and Mansa Musa, but we can afford this.

A shock war elephant will probably still beat a city raider mace on a hill, and we would need to move our units off to attack the city, so I would wait for some pike`s to be added to the invasion fleet. The island city could be taken before then.

I've unloaded half of our troops in Berlin and sent half the fleet to Corinth to pick up more troops. The other half continued to the island city which will be easily taken. We killed a few aztec ships and Gemany now has some galleons patrolling the seas(we gave Frederick Astronomy for war with the Aztecs).
We picked up a +1 with Cyrus when he asked for Scientific Method and I agreed. I think attacking Victoria is too risky right now, I'm afraid we will pick up to many negatives for little gain.

Last part coming up.

TDK

T8: We have taken the Aztec island city. Gandhi asked for Education and I complied so we have +1 with him. Kill 2 more aztec ships. Saladin made peace with Monte.

I decided to take a few extra turns because of an opportunity to take Tecnoctitlan that required knowledge of enemy troop movement etc.

T11: We have Tecnoctitlan, no losses! We killed 7 ground units and his entire fleet was sunk in port(5 Galleons, 4 Caravels). His army of elephants is somewhere in the north together with some horse archers. His horse might be able to reach the city so I moved all remaining troops in to defend(he will have to attack across the river to retake).

Another positive development is that Isa asked us for Divine Right which gave us a +1 with her. It also seems that one of the "you traded with our enemy" negatives disappeared so maybe we can secure Isa's vote after all? We should pick up a +1 for open borders soon and maybe we can trade her some resources without pissing off our other friends? Mdy, can you make a new assessment of our "real" relations with free religion? If not, I might have time to do it tomorrow.

In this turnset I pursued an aggressive growth strategy so not many mines are being worked and I have checked that no unwarranted specialists were assigned in every single turn. I believe that we should continue on this track as we have plenty of production as is.

note to next player: Someone changed to emacipation, so maybe we should try to secure Democracy and switch to it as well when we revolt the next time? Losing slavery will not be a big loss as we want our cities to grow anyway.
Arabia should be bribed to war with Monte again when the 10 turns are up.
Sparta has some units in queue and might need whipping to prevent loss of hammers.

Good job so far!

It looks like we are 2 turns away from Mass Media and 3 from our GE. Where do we want to build the UN? Does it matter? Should we just do it in StPete? As an alternative I would suggest Beijing.

Mansa is the only one trading Democracy at the moment. We could try to trade him Electricity for it and Gunpowder. If we don't want tp trade to Mansa we could trade Scientific Method to Saladin for Gunpowder but I think we would pick a negative modifier with Louis. Oncce we have Gunpowder I suggest we trade Physics to HC for Chemistry and perhaps Economy. JC has Military Tradition but is not willing to trade it yet.

Excellent news.

I would build the UN in St Pete. The GE will not be enough to finish it completly and St Pete is our primary production city.

At the moment we only have 1 unhappy citizen at the moment due to emancipation, so this does not seem like a big priority. Slavery would still be useful to whip away unhappy aztec citizens for granary`s etc. We don`t really have another tec we really need at the moment so I would hold of in trading them in the hope that someone will ask for them as a gift.

Ceasear, Kublai Kahn, and Huayna won`t be bribed into war as they have other things on their minds. This will complicate our situation, I will try to post a revised update of our diplomatic relations and their impact on our strategy later this evening.

I agree.

I would build UN in Moscow as it is just as fast as St. Pete. Moscow should start working the fish at Argos this turn to grow in 3 turns at which time the engineer will pop. Moscow would then get 1260 hammers(750 base + 17 pop * 30 hammers/pop) and would then need 16 turns to complete it((1500-1260)/15) provided we then assign an engineer. If we switch to Bureaucracy sometimes soon this would be further reduced.
St. Pete would get 1110 hammers from the engineer and would then need 16 turns to complete the UN.
In conclusion, we utilize our engineer more effectively in Moscow and we are much better off using St. Pete to build military units because of it's drill instructor and military academy.

On the political front, I'm a bit worried about Caesar, his power graph has sky-rocketed and he say he's busy when asked to go to war. We might wan't a bit of a defense in Moscow.

Kublai is also busy and has been for some time, maybe he is planning an attack on Louis? If so, we should look for an opportunity to join after finishing our war with Monte.

Our real relations are as follows when we have no state religion:

Huyana Capec: +7
Julius Caesar: +6
Mansa Musa: +12
Cyrus: +12
Kublai Kahn: +3, will rise to +4 doe to resource deals.
Gandi: +11
Saladin: +13
Izzy: +7, will rise to +10 due to open borders/ resource deal
Fredrick: +9

If we are in Buddism our relations are:

Huyana Capec: +10
Julius Caesar: +4
Mansa Musa: +14
Cyrus: +14
Kublai Kahn: +2 will rise to +3 doe to resource deals.
Gandi: +11
Saladin: +15
Izzy: +3, will rise to +6 due to open borders/resource deal.
Fredrick: +11

I agree with building the UN in Moscow.

Another thing we need to decide is what to research after mass media. I suggest we trade for gunpowder and research chemistry, then biology to boost our growth.

Kublai is also busy and has been for some time, maybe he is planning an attack on Louis? If so, we should look for an opportunity to join after finishing our war with Monte.
Unfortunatly they are friendly towards one another so it won`t happen.

Does anyone know how you get the "you shared your technological discoveries" bonus. If we can figure this out it will simplify our future strategy.

One thing we might consider is to stick with buddism and switch to organised religion. We could then try to convert Julius Caesar to buddsism. Unless they attack someone who we are not counting on for votes or we get very lucky it is the only way we will get Rome`s vote.

I am ok with Moscow for the UN.

I agree with trading Gunpowder. I would also trade Chemistry and research Biology next.

I do not know about the technological discoveries bonus. I would expect that it is an advanced tech that nobody else knows.

Is it worth building missionaries and trying to convert Ceasar? At what time should we expect the AIs to switch to Free Religion? I think I would rather build more troops and start other wars until we have enough votes.

I`ve just checked the numbers. On second thoughts it looks like we should abandon trying to get votes by trying to bribe civs into war, it is unlikley to work any time soon. If we switch to no state religion we would have Mansa Musa, Cyrus, Gandi, Saladin, Izzy`s, and Fredricks votes. This is 38.4%.

Killing Monty will give us 42.1%

We can gift techs to Huyana Capec to get th"shared technological discoveries bonus". This will give us his vote (48.7%)

We can do the same to Julius Caesar which together with the shared civic bonus will give us his vote (56.9%)

We can probably get the rest of the vote by growing our population.

I can play this svening if Hamfist doesn`t show up.
