SGOTM 03 - Team One

Anybody out there?

I just started and Hatty is already asking for Education. I don't think I can do it. Let me know otherwise. I'll pause for a little while.

Hatty is almost certainly going to be our rival at the UN therefore a few negative modifiers with her do not matter, so I would turn her down.

T0 - 1025
Yaroslav - Whip Courthouse
Beijing - MM to get it out of starvation.
Trade Paper+Philo to KK for Eng and 140 Gold. No negative multipliers picked up.
Trade Stone for 5 Gold to KK. We should get a new stone once we capture Argos.
Renegotiate Gems for Silk to Cyrus to Gems for 4 Gold/turn. We have Silk in Shanghai.
Decide not to renegotiate deals to Gandhi or Toku as I don't want to pick up modifiers.
Cannot trade Music for Peace with Monty to Frederick. We could do it the other way around but we would pick up negative modifiers.
Upgrade our Galley to Galleon.

T1 - 1040
Rostov - Finish University. Start Trebuchet.
Yaroslav - Start University.
Shanghai - Whip WB.
StPete - Build Military Academy.
Partial stack in Beijing starts moving towards Argos.

T2 - 1055
Hatty asks for Education. Refused!
Isabella asks for MC. Agreed.
Beijing - Whip Library

T3 - 1070
Nanjing - Start Lighthouse
Beijing - Start University

T4 - 1085
StPete - Finish Maceman. Start University.
Spice to Mansa for 4 Gold/turn.
Alex moves a settler/sword/axe/Xbow in jungle south of Athens.
Galleon lands 2 maces, 1 cat next to Argos.
Iron is back.

T5 - 1100
Moscow - Finish University. Start Observatory.
Rostov - Finish Treb. Start Lighthouse.
GE born in Moscow. Keep it for Oxford.
Capture Argos. No Losses.
Revolt to Free Religion, Representation.
Alex Settler stack disappears.

T6 - 1106
Revolution.

T7 - 1112
Revolution.

T8 - 1118
Arrive in range of Athens
Alex moves a Maceman towards Beijing.
Alex has a Trireme show up north near Novgorod.

T9 - 1124
Whip University in Beijing, Novgorod and Yaroslav.
Alex moves his Mace on one of our Elephant next to Beijing.
Alex moves his Trireme in range of our wb in Yaroslav.
Start bombarding Athens.

T10 - 1130
Scientifict Method done. Start Physics.
StPete, Novgorod, Yaroslav, Beijing Finish University.
Switch Moscow to Oxford. I suggest to use GE to finish it asap.
Alex pillage Elephant near Beijing.
He will probably pillage our wb next.

I did not finish the turn in case we don't want to use the GE for Oxford.
Also a lot of builds could be changed.
There is 1 caravel moving towards the Americans.
The Chinese culture is starting to push us back.
We also need 1 more wb for Nanjing.
The mine near Rostov is being change to windmill. We could still wait to finish it.
2 workers are next to Argos. They should develop the cow and later the iron.

Nice!

Here are my assumptions for our strategy in the coming turnset:

Make an enemy of Hatty, meaning refusung all her requests.
Start building an invasion force on our island while still reinforcing the east with trebuchets.
(build Oxford with engineer) push back engineer one gp-slot to allow assignment of extra scientist in Moscow.
Get a level 4 unit ASAP to build HE in Pete.

Please comment, and I will write a preturn plan later today(tonight).

Why are we building a theatre in Bejing? The library/uni will provide all the culture it needs and it does not need extra happiness. In the short term it may be best to whip a crossbow there to deal with the Greek mace. With two food resources it will regrow the population quick enough. We may as well complete the theatre in Nanjing as it is nearly built, after that maybe it could be used as a small producion centre for military units. The lighthouse in Shanghai could be whipped and the oveflow could be put into a workboat.

Does Argos need a library, it will never be even a modest commerce city. Maybe it would be better utalized in building us a few more units.

I guess building Oxford in Moscow is the best use we can make of the GE.

The workers ouutside St Pete are currently building 1 workshop and 1 watermill. As watermills are better than workshops wouldn`t it be better to build a 2nd watermill in place of the farm next to the river, and build a replacement farm where the workshop is currently being built.

Make an enemy of Hatty, meaning refusung all her requests.

She is going to be our opponant in the UN so I agree we should refuse any request from her. For the same reason I would not invade her however as it would be more efficent to attack someone else.

Mdy, I wouldn't attack Hatty either - unless we have to. Hatty is super popular, how do you propose to beat her in the UN?
Unless she changes religion by herself, we have to attack her soon IMO. I propose we attack the Iron city(her only iron) which is also a buddhist city, that might make her convert to Taoism. If we have to go to war with her, better make her do the declaring if we can. Maybe I can start making some arrogant demands of her?

I don't have acces to the game, but from the top of my head I can say that I agree Argos does not need a library. A theatre in Nanjing seems fine, we are pressed by chinese culture there, right(as I remember there is a horse that we want)? A theater in Beijing does seem excessive, we will have the surrounding lands soon enough.

I saw the workshop being built, I will consider your idea when I look at the game again. Another thing to consider is building another city north-east of the gems outside of Pete's cross. It could work the gems, the oil and the unused jungle lands? Maybe we can wait a while to decide on that one, pending a decision on fast diplomatic, diplomatic by domination or space race.

I can see the point in attacking Hatty as long as we limit ourselves to taking 1 buddist city. Hatty actually has two sources of iron, I assume the city you are talking about is Byblos? We could also annoy Hatty by canceling our open borders and resource deals with her.

Monty is still willing to make peace with Fredrick if we give him music and drama.

mdy, we don't have room for another water wheel as we would lose our irrigation to adjacent tiles.

T0: Cancel workshop and send worker south to chop forest in Moscow and build cottage. In Moscow, work coast tile instead of forest. Finish Oxford.
In Beijing, change to Barracks. In Shanghai, whip lighthouse and queue work boat. In Nanjing, start working unimproved fish, I plan on running a few artists here when the theater completes to reclaim OUR land.
Novgorod changed to Harbor(2turns). Start working cottage instead of mine(will change mine to windmill later).
Rostov, mine to plains cottage.
Argos change to Lighthouse.

I will play on later tonight or tomorrow. Please comment.

Mdy, I'm not sure about brokering a peace, one is christian, another is buddhist, maybe we should let them fight?

IBT: Alex burns fishing fleet at Yaroslav.

T1: We kill Alex's trireme. Whip Shanghai for workboat, whip Yaroslavl' for wb. Whip Argos for Lighthouse. Set Moscow to max growth. Cancel crab deal with Mansa, we don't need it. Trade the Gems to Rome for 3gold/turn instead.

IBT: Isabella asks for open borders, why not. That tech you gave her paid of, amh.

T2: Argos, barracks. Nanjing, Granary, 2 artists assigned. Yaroslavl', longbow. Rostov, trebuchet. Novgorod, lighthouse. Whip Beijing, dangerous situation might arise, better be prepared.

IBT: We defeat the maceman outside of Beijing at close to fifty-fifty, nice. Another mace at Argos.

T3: Land crossbow at argos to protect. Germany is getting her ass kicked, so I decide to broker a cease fire. We give Drama and Music and he gives us 190 gold.
We take Athens at the cost of 1 cat, 1 mace. It has an Academy, nice. With the culture gone, we attack his mace at Argos, we win and will keep our town intact.

IBT: Monte declares on us, guess he doesn't like diplomatic interference...

T4: Nothing really, start advance on Sparta. Nanjing starts Galleon.

T5: Meet Washington, he's not too unpopular, so I trade him a fish. Hatty has Nationalism, ouch!

IBT: Largest civ: Huyana, Tokugawa, Team One, Hatty, Julius, Cyrus, Monte, Gandhi. Interesting, Toku at 2nd...
Louis asks for 130 gold, I give it to him.

T6: Start bombardment og Sparta. Education is becoming a trivial thing. I trade Education to Louis for 470 gold(I'm doing this so we can keep running at 100% science, we should attempt to always run 100% science as all commerce going to science are effectively multiplied by ~2.5. Our economy is effectively 2.5 times bigger if we run 100% science as opposed to running 100% tax.

T7: Nothing. I trade Education to Julius for 550 gold. Good news, I spot an Egyptian Taoist missionary across the water in Heliopolis. There are also 3 CR swordsmen and a galleon, he might be coming our way... Moving extra Mace to protect and start longbow in Pete.

T8: Hatty converts, yes! Complete observatory in Moscow(running at 525.95 beakers/turn!). Start Market for happiness.

IBT: English demand that we stop trading with Mongolia, I tell her to go f*ck herself(or something similar...).

T9: We take Sparta, lose 2 level 3 maces(at 96.4% and 90.8%, grrrr...).

T10: Physics is done. Got a scientist for being first, I would add him to Moscow as a superspecialist(he would yield 2646 beakers for electricity, we will catch up in 88 turns by joining him(88*30=2646) + 1.5 hammers for Moscow and the possibility for a longer game makes it worthwhile). I will leave it to next player to decide what to do with him. There is also the possibility of building an academy in Beijing or Novgorod but I don't think it will pay off.

Athens will come out of resistance next turn, I think we should aim to make Athens our megacity by building a Globe Theater there. This would serve two purposes:
1: Burning our great persons in a megacity would increase their output - engineer for UN, scientists for tech.
2: It would grant us a lot of votes.

Can anyone asses our situation on diplomacy? If we steamed straight to UN, would we get the vote? Who will be our rival, is it the one with most score, or the one with the most votes? I don't think we get the vote out now but I'm not very experienced on these things.
What do we do then, attack someone? Not egypt, she is the perfect opponent now that she converted to Taoism.

Note to next player: I lost som level 3 units but we still have a few left, guard them well and try to take them to level 4, even if it means delaying the destruction of Alex a few turns. A Heroic Epic in Pete would be monster.
Also, there is only 10 xp to the next Great General, I would use him as a drill instructor in Pete, we could really use those extra XP(our bombardments are painfully slow).

TDK

Great news that Hatty converted. And good progress in general.

I would say let's continue. We need to finish Alex and beef up our military. Science is in good shape I think. We should probably have some navy all around in case Monty shows up somewhere. Victoria might declare too.

P.S. It looks like the file you uploaded does not match your finish point.

H.C is at +12 with us so we should have his vote.

We should also have Gandi`s as it is easy to get him to vote for you.

Julius Caesar is at +8 , but his favourite civic is representation so we should have his vote once he switches to it- We may want to gift him some techs to speed this up.

Mansa Musa is at +10, this should be enough to get his vote, but we can brbe him into war with Montezuma with liberalism to be on the safe side.

Kublai Kahn is at +8 but this will rise to +12 if we stick with bureacracy.

Cyrus is at +7 this will only rise to +9 unless he asks for gifts/ we adopt vassalage, unfortunatly this is mutually exclusive with Kublai Kahn`s favourite civic. So we should scertainly get either cyrus or K.K.`s vote and with a bit of luck we could get both.

Toguawa is at +6 but with Mercantilism this will rise to +11, this should also allow open borders taking us to +13, so we should be able to get his vote if we switch to Mercantilism sufficiently early, but the Great Lighthouse means this will cause a big drop in GDP.

Saladin is at +8 and can be bribed into war with Montezuma which should give us his vote.

Fredrick is at +7, which will rise to +8if we have been trading resources long enough, they can be bribed into war with Monty for music and philosophy, though we may want to delay this until we attack Monty as Fredrick got beaten up in the last war with them.

Taking the above into account it looks as if we could have enough votes to win if we play our cards right and wipe out Alexander and Montezuma. This would be a relativly quick game so it may be better to bulb electricity with the scientist.

Montezuma dosn`t even have optics so we don`t need to worry about his navy.

I doubt we have time to build the Globe in Athens- it is very expensive and needs 6 theatres.

I agree that the next Great General should be an instructor in St Pete.

Maybe our next Great Person should be a Great Engineer, I will check the numbers later.

Hi all. My brother has been typing his dissertation recently (almost solidly for the last two weeks), so I have not been on the PC at home for a while.

I make the roster to be:

mdy - Up
mboza - On Deck
Hamfist
amh52
Astrum?
TDK

Does that sound right?

Mass media is currently 37 turns away. I would burn the scientist for 2.5 turns worth of bulbs and hope that the game is not going to last another 88 turns.

StP is on 746/900 with 10/turn for a GE.
Mos is on 534/900 with 60/turn.
So in 7 turns, Mos will pop a GS (67%) GA(17%) or GE(14%), and will be 20 turns from another (assuming it goes 900, 1200, 1500, 1800?).
In 27 turns, Moscow will be 25 turns away from a GP, and StP will be 49? (746 + 270 /1500).
In 52 turns, Moscow will be 30 turns away, and StP 54? (746+520/1800)

So I think the next person has to cut specialists from Moscow, to get Mos down to at least 17 turns to a GP. And I think that limits Mos to less than two specialists over the next 16 turns. Otherwise we build the UN without a GE?

How long after UN can we expect a winning vote. Do we need to win the chair election, then pass free religion, no nukes... before going for supreme overlord? And how many turns will this take?

If we are lucky we will be able to win immediatly after the UN is built, but I suspect we may need to take a few more of monty`s cities to win. We may as well have a vote on diplomatic victory everytime a new UN resolution comes around until we win. We certainly don`t want to pass free religion as it will reduce tension between Hatty and our allies.

I agree with mboza that the next GP needs to be an engineer.

Unless there is a major disagreement with our strategy I will play on monday evening.

Mboza said:
assuming it goes 900, 1200, 1500, 1800?
I had assumed it was 900, 1050, 1200, 1350 & 1500, can anyone confirm if it's one or the other? If Mboza is right we should pop him now.
Mdy, good work on the diplomatic situation. Two of the civs you mention as likely to vote for us are 1st(Inca) and 2nd(Japan) in population. Do you know if population(=votes) will be decisive in selecting our opponent at the UN? Or is it score?

TDK

Which civs are you talking about? The victory conditions screen indicates that Hatty is the largest rival. The number of votes is equal to the total number of population points in all your cities. At the moment Hatty would have the largest no of votes. The ony rival that looks like it might come close is Rome.

I will try to check how many GP points we need for the next few GP`s.

[edit]

It goes 1050, 1200.

It goes 1050, 1200.
Then I think another gp in Moscow and then the engineer is better:
It's basically a choice between running 17ggp/turn(16turns) max to pop the engineer now or running 47ggp/turn(30turns) average until Pete hits 1050. In terms of science output etc., the second option is clearly the best and allows the most balanced growth of Moscow.
If you decide to pop the engineer first, should we assign a scientist in Pete to speed it up? If we do decide to pop engineer first, should we then whip Moscow's market?

If you look at my turnset report you will see that I quoted a "Largest Civ" census, according to which Incas and Japan are the largest civs(followed by Team One and Egypt).

Assigning an extra scientist in StP would be worthwhile if Moscow was going to beat StP to the GP, and we were also cutting GPs from Moscow. As it is, the GE will not be used immeadiately, so I see no reason to risk a GS to bring him forward.

- Having rechecked the numbers, we are going to have to cut GPs from Moscow, so we should be tinking about running more GP in StP. Each 5 turns that we run a scientist brings the GE 3? turn forward, and allows an occasional extra scientist in Moscow, at a pretty small risk of popping a scientist. How large a risk is acceptable? 10%

StP is 31 turns from 1050, and Moscow can get upto 900 + 1049 in that time, starting from 534/900 with 60/turn, which allows an average of 45.6.

So because the next GPs are at 900 and 1050, we can get another GS out of Moscow first.

I would continue with Mos at full tilt until the next GP, and then cut it back to one turn after StP. And I would start a scientist in StP, and check the percentages every couple of turns.

If you look at my turnset report you will see that I quoted a "Largest Civ" census, according to which Incas and Japan are the largest civs(followed by Team One and Egypt).

Each extra pop in large cities has always counted for more people than in smll cities. (10 pop in one city were 550,000 people, 1 pop in 10 cities were 100,000 people once upon a time) So I assume that Egypt has the most citizens, but Inca and Japan have fewer but larger cities, giving them more millions population for the demographics. Or is the "Largest Civ" census just land area?
