SGOTM 04 - Geezers

Interesting turnset so far.

Not sure that it was a good idea to split our forces. The first priority should have been to get a foothold with enough forces to withstand the inevitable counter attack as Thrallia (?) pointed out. It's a pity you weren't able to attach the autosave from the turn before the computer crashed so we could see the current state. However Brennus has presumably attacked with his best units first so we may well do better against the rest.

PS. Remember to repeat your moves as exactly as possible when you reload from the autosave.

Sorry It was a bit late and was not thinking about the saves. They were interesting turns. So here are all the autosaves to the point of crash.

As for the split, It was not a bad move. It may have been a bad move to keep Isca and I did underestimated the capitals culture and the city's proximity.

I will be deleting these files in 7 days to save space.

EDIT: Files Deleted

Here are the remaining auto saves including pre crash. These too will be deleted in 7 days. Btw, I made the partial post to let you know I was not slacking. Now I will turn off all other programs and return to finish the turn. I will do my best to repeat the actions....only thing I can realy remember doing that turn is rebuilding a gem mine and NOT landing the 3 Granadiers in Isca.

EDIT: Deleted attachments

Sum: We took 4 Cities, one in Homeland. Ready to take Bib next turn. Just remember to bombard with the frig and lead off with cannons. We have plenty of units. Evacuated Yayoi. Killed a whole bunch of G'mans units. Lost a few too.

We should take all of his cities except the Spanish city he captured and sue for peace at that time for all he is worth. Please do not get any one to DoW on Bren. He will become a Vassel and our captured cities are going to suffercate. It has happend too many times in solo games.

After taking Bib, we should take the city to south with cannons and Vienna with combined arms, as soon as possible. Next turn.:) That will leave us one more city to take. Bren recently promoted a LB, so he do not have gold for promotions. He still do not have chem.:D

1601 AD (Turn 337) Start from Auto save. Repeat the same actions to the best of my memory.
IBT: Bren attack and Game does not crash. Knight Kills our Granade. Others just park in front. I think because of the War Elephant. Phew.:yeah:

1604 AD (Turn 338) More unit builds and worker action. Move a settler, a worker and a sword to a Galleon. Okay time to deal with Bren. Who ever gave a cannon, now called Patton Killer with 2 Barriage promo's, thank you. The rest of the unit kill off all others. Cannons Rock. Then bombard Bib with Frigs and go east to find a LB on a hill heading to Bib. One of 3 G'nades kill him and then realizing that was foolish  , unload the remaining 2 G'nades to cover the first. Hope they survive. Sorry. Each of 2 coastal cities have 2 Muskets and 2 LB's defending with other units backing up. Rush a Cannon in Yayoi for the leaving Party.
IBT: Gandhi lands 1 each of G'nade, Phant and a Cat by Haitha.

1607 AD (Turn 339) Kill Gandhi's units. Promoted many units. Healing. Picked up the LB killer and team. We should get many units healed next turn.

1610 AD (Turn 330) Evacuating Yayoi  . Loaded up enough units to take Bib next turn . Moving units around. Chopping outside of anyones fat cross. Oh turned on Science a while back and Hannie had a settler with 2 rifle escort near LA for a while. And there is a G'nade one a hill playing look out. I would use him on the next attack. Add the new unit arrivals in the boat, with the settler, to the inland city assult.

Sorry for the bad write up. I should have skipped this turn all togather but very hard to resist. Need sleep.:p

Oh look at the graphs. Gandhi need help. If Gandhi really want Haitha, should we let him take it? Just wondering.

The Save

Wow. The Geezers rock. I never thought that evacuation would have worked. I now have some things to think about in my single player games.

Had a quick look at the save and it looks promising Htdaus. :goodjob:

It may be better to unload the cannons and some support before attacking Bibracte. Otherwise the attack is likely to be fairly expensive since cannons don't have amphibious promotion. I'll have a more detailed look later to see if I missed anything.

I think we should probably give up Haitha now as well...we've got ourselves a beachhead in Celtia, and enough units to take the rest of it.

I personally think that any mainland city that Gandhi threatens(except for Nidaros right now) we should evacuate so he can conquer it(after pop rushing something big in it to reduce its population for unrest)

I think we should build Theatres in our new cities initially. They're cheaper and we need to get the border pops before any of the other AIs get a chance to settle an annoying tiddly city on our land.

I think the attack force on Bibracte needs some reinforcement from Isca. It's on a hill which will increase their defence and cost us units unless we can weaken his units. In fact I think all of Brennus' cities that are left that we want are on hills.

I disagree with wholesale evacuation atm. The new cities are going to cost us a lot for a while. All of them will need several builds to bring them up to speed not to mention cottaging all those wretched farms.

How long do we put it off though? Its getting to the point that Gandhi needs our land...period. We should give up Haitha since he is so intent on capturing it. Additionally, each city we lose will lower the maintenace we pay in our new cities...

Finally, I think we should build the Palace in the most productive city in Celtia first. That will move us over once and for all, and make it easier for us to give up the rest of our original site(not to mention, all those cities have Courthouses already, our new ones may not, thus it would save us some city maintenance)

I agree we need to pop borders ASAP. Look what has happened to the south on our initial continent... the AI's will settle any nook or cranny they can find. However, I wouldn't build theatres... I would simply build culture first. Usually 2-3 turns of culture build will make the first border pop.

Timing for abandoning cities is going to be a tough call... I doubt any of us have experience on giving up land to an AI  . I think I'm with Thrallia on this, the sooner the better. My rationale:

  • Ghandi is falling behind, we need to boost his commerce. Our gems and gold cities are the ticket.
  • If he keeps landing forces and we keep killing them, he is wasting production. If we don't kill them, they will pillage all the improvements.
  • He seems to be slow about conquering us, so it will take a long time before he "evicts" us.

A couple of other thoughts...

Hannibal and Mehmed are getting too advanced. We need to give them something else to do. They are friends, but Mehmed and Washington aren't. Looks like Mehmed will go to war with Washington for Steel... does this force Hannibal to declare on Mehmed to protect his Vassal?

I'm a little surprised at our civics. Sorry if I missed some earlier conversation, but shouldn't we be on Mercantilism and Free Religion? Both boost research.

If Mehmed declares war on Washington, then Hannibal will declare war on Mehmed :)
A Master and vassal share relations, so Hannibal would have to declare war in order to protect his vassal....that would be a great idea. It would keep them occupied and not trading with each other(thus only giving them both Gandhi to trade with), and it would prevent them from trying to settle our new lands(or from declaring on Brennus in order to attempt to vassalize him)

As for our civics...I didn't even look at them during my turnset, I had assumed we switched to Mercantilism and Free Religion ASAP...actually, I think I'm the one that traded for Liberalism, so that one is my fault. I assumed from all our discussion that we had switched to Mercantilism upon discovering Banking though.

edit: As far as giving up our cities to Gandhi. I don't propose a wholesale evacuation right now...but Gandhi is throwing huge amounts of hammers into his troops...and we just keep destroying them all.

We need to evaluate each city and decide how much that city is actually impacting our empire right now. Haitha, we can afford to give up. Yayoi and IronSheep we can afford to give up. El Dorado we can afford to give up as soon as a few of our overseas cities are out of revolt. Pretty much all our southern cities we can give up. And finally, Nidaros. It has the Pyramids there, but we can use any government civic except Police State now, so its not worth as much as it was...and would be a huge boon for Gandhi.

I think we need to wait to give up Nidaros until we've got some of the big cities in Celtia out of revolt so they can automatically become the capital when we give it up(rather than wasting turns on rebuilding it). But at the same time...giving up Nidaros and having our capital in Celtia soon would save us a lot on maintenance, since all the cities on our original continent have courthouses, but most of the new ones probably don't.

I too do not think a mass exit is the solution. Actually, I would hold the cities south of Uppsala for another couple of centuries. If we are going to build the bloody space elevator for him, which we should, we need to be a forerunner and have a good city to do it with. And it has to be on the original continent.

I love the idea of getting Mehmed to DoW on Washington. Lets do it.

How does mercantilism help boost research? From the free specialist?

I just recently tried this on the Alexander GOTM and discovered it ended up hurting my science and economy. Is there something else I should have done?

Presumably this means using the culture slider rather constructing culture buildings? Good point.

No argument with your rationale. I have two problems with giving up Haitha atm.
  1. Ghandhi's culture will start causing us problems.
  2. Once Ghandhi has a foothold on our land it will be much easier for him to reinforce and send much bigger SoDs against El Do & Nidaros. We're likely to find that we have to give those cities rather earlier than we might have wanted.

EDIT: Anyone know where Jenarie is? Perhaps we need to start thinking about skipping her?

No, I meant building culture in the city we want to pop... i.e. as soon as Gergovia comes out of reistance build culture for 2-3 turns instead of a theatre. The culture slider would work as well, but it seems more wasteful (it provides culture in cities where we don't need it). The only trick with this is remembering to switch back to constructing a building after it pops... I sometimes forget and keep building culture I don't need.

Yep, there is a real risk that once he gets going, this becomes a snowball running down the hill.

Yes, I like to take science specialists. Mercantilism is quite good when running Representation. With Representation, it means 6 beakers per city (7.5 with library). This is more than we will lose in foreign trades routes by far.

I keep forgetting about that option.

I'm here; sorry. Haven't been able to get the save until now but was following the discussion and hadn't really seen a plan yet although I'm sure a lot will be more obvious when I've looked at the save then re-read it all.

I made a map so we can talk about which cities to keep and which to raze. We have a settler on the way over too so we can raze and settle pretty quick at least once.

The orange and light blue are Brennus - I changed colors because it showed up better. The yellow is Izzy.

Better skip me after all. Leaving in a few minutes to take mom to ER and will likely to be there all day. If she gets admitted I won't have time for the next several days.

markh is back from a long weekend. I will take a look at it in the evening. As we Germans have a public holiday tomorrow I will try to get my turns done then.

Sorry to hear that about your mom, Jenarie. All the best.
