SGOTM 04 - Trash Team

Will play tomorrow. How many turns should I do?

BTW, regarding saves, we can post them here in the thread? Because I was under the impression that saves have to be uploaded to the GOTM page.

I don't know how many turns it's supposed to be (I'd say 10 to 15, but I'm not sure), but certainly you need to upload the save to the gotm page.

They do have to be uploaded. But it returns a link to the save file which you can copy to the end of your report.

I'm happy with gold/corn as city number 2, but I'd rather not send the settler out unescorted. Jungle has a nasty habit of spawning panthers who sneak up out of the fog IBT and punish you for moves like that.

It's a way off yet, but those two cities will seal off the northern part of the island for us. Would it be better to expand away from the jungle and let Genghis clear-cut it for us before stealing his cities, or settle it ourselves to deny him space and backfill the north later on if Gandhi doesn't spread there?

I'm of the opinion that for the early part of this game, military is going to be more important to us than infrastructure. We'll want to take out the Mongols before migrating since they're bound to take a disliking to India. Do you think they're too far south for an axe-rush? With the gold city we'll be able to support a far-flung gem like Karakorum will probably turn out to be and anything else could be razed for now and filled in later.

The alternative would be to beeline construction and hit Genghis then before he becomes too powerful and time-consuming to take out quickly.

It'll be interesting to see how religions pan out on our continent which will be significant in terms of diplomatic relations.

We could hole up in the north of the continent until we get astronomy (or optics at the very least) then go for a major war vs GK (leaving Gandhi to capture our cities). If we could engineer it that Gandhi has this continent to himself then he'd have a good chance at space race.

I've been remiss in not sorting out length of sets. 15 turns per set feels about right for now, we'll review it again when we get to AD.

We should remember not to switch to Gandhi's religion. Rather we should convert the rest of the world to be friends with Gandhi's religion.

This will mean acquiring it ourselves and researching mediatation to get some appropriate monasteries going. That'll cost us an extra GS (philosophy), but a spell in pacifism will sort that out if our scientist cities have a suitable state religion.

The only thing that worries me about Genghis and Gandhi is that it's the typical AI warmonger v peacemonger combo meaning Genghis is likely to take an almost immediate dislike to him, see the two of us at war and decide to dogpile India. Hopefully relgion will remedy that (or the AIs tendency to favour war with the human over itself), but the Mongol tends not to be too bothered about matters of faith.

We have to hope it spreads to us and we can build a monastery (or use OR) to convert GK and others. But I feel the most likely plan is to take out GK and leave his cities for Gandhi to capture.

Does the OR missionary thing apply only to your state religion, or to any religion that's present?

I have to confess I haven't played about with that too much.

Any religion- which would make it pretty useful if we want to adopt our own religion but still spread Gandhi's or just not adopt one period to stay friendly with everyone.

Whipping away the population cam hands me over is always very pleasureable
By the way cam, I don't care if there are 1 or 2 unhappies in your cities for me to whip away ;) : a library is costing 3 pops (I don't know the hammers cost, but I know for sure the pop cost .

For the benefit of most of you guys, I crave big city populations (especially on Epic when unhappiness lasts so long) while Piggy and Cabert don't mind pulling out the whip. I concede that there's certainly a role for the whip ... I'm not anti-whip ... just less 'whip happy' than some. I don't mind whipping Granaries or Libraries so long as it's not wasteful and will lead to more unhappiness problems than production gains. When we've got a massive food surplus, like Nidaros, I don't mind racking up a few unhappy citizens either to whip away, so Cabert - that's fine.

Let's wait until we get to technology trading, then you'll see the sparks fly! ;)

Gandhi has a religion?

But I feel the most likely plan is to take out GK and leave his cities for Gandhi to capture.

Another tricky one. I'll tentatively vote against an Axe rush at Genghis for a few of the reasons outlined (too far south, better to take developed cities later, keep him on side for trades, we have good land to the north anyway). When Genghis gets Keshiks, we'll probably find ourselves at war anyway, so it might be worth discussing how to handle that in terms of technology trading and building Spears.

I still advocate a city near Delhi so Gandhi can get a foothold ... but if my test game is worth anything, it will show that he's more interested in running his troops into ours than capturing undefended cities. I am guessing that we're going to have a hell of a time pushing him south towards Mongolia.

The Great Library

I would still like to float the idea of The Great Library and settling one city to the south near the Marble. Literature is off our bee-line, but we will be wanting at least three Great Scientists for Lightbulbing Optics and Astronomy I would think.

Religion
Gandhi does not have a religion yet, but he should get one at some point. Hopefully we get the same one in a city. Let's keep settling cities and hope for the best.

What is very important is to spread religion as soon as possible. Before theocracy anyway. At that point religion spreading grinds to a halt. hopefully we can have galleys with missionaries sailing to other neighbours before that time.

GK
I dont think we should Axe-rush him now. Unless he gets really close to us, perhaps, or takes the marble site ;)

Wonders
I agree a detour to the great library is an option, but we could do without. It depends on how hardcore we want to get. A team like CFR does not take any detours. They went straight for Astronomy in SGOTM 2. We have to decide if the competitive advantage of having the Astronomy as early as possible weighs in against the extra science and production needed for Great Library.

Technology
Do we want to go for Alphabet at all? If we do not meet anyone but GK and Gandhi I would say not. They are both very poor trading partners. We'd be better off going for relevant technologies on the way to astronomy.

independence day strategy
What we did in Independence day was build 5-6 cities (not that great cities) and focus them on commerce only. Every city had food to support cottages and scientists. Production is on a much lower priority. We only need 1 maybe 2 city with reasonable production to build some units. Cities dont need many more buildings than a library, granary and trading post. For the rest they can produce units/boats/missionaries at slow speed while we race to astronomy. Every city should focus on commerce, growing cottages (or simply working coastal squares)

Of course all this is still assuming we (us, the big G and the every friendly mr. Khan) are far away from the rest of the world. If we can reach the rest of the world with Galleys we can migrate that way.

We have to be flexible in laid down plans.

Hardcore Independence Day Strategy (IDS) is currently debatable imo. In Independence Day we weren't too bothered about who took over our old empire as long as there wasn't a dominant civ in the old world.

This situation is different in that we want Gandhi to dominate this continent as well as clearing off ourselves. I think that this means we'll need to stomp GK hard (maybe until he vassalises to Gandhi) in addition to the Great Migration. We also want to leave Gandhi well located cities and maybe one or two nice wonders.

I suspect this will involve us in a detour from astronomy beeline as well as a military expansion. At what point we detour is another matter.

Its also possible that when we get to exploring Gandhi's back yard we could discover that he's got a huge peninsula (or archipelago) to himself or links to other civilisations which would necessitate another strategy rethink.

In the short term (i.e. stuge's set) its about settling corngold, deciding on its first build and debating relative priorities of axes vs TP for Nidaros. I think that we should build TP before building any boats .

Techwise after AH its a choice of pottery, IW, writing or even MC. We'll probably want at least one more city before starting on Colossus (if that's where we're going). To make Colossus worthwhile we'll need to be working a fair number of coastal tiles. Corngold for instance won't benefit from Colossus at all.

I'd reckon on IW next. Granaries can wait a bit because we'll probably be mainly building axes, TP and a boat for the next couple of sets. It's also nice to know where early resources (horses and iron) are located before completing our various dotmap proposals.

Your right, Cap'n, the strategy is still open.

Nice thing about Astronomy beeline is that it includes a fair number of military techs. Tricky part will be that if we want GS to lightbulb Astronomy we cannot get CS. If we dont have CS we cant build Berserkers. :(

If we need Astronomy to reach other civs, which we should know after send out a few boats, we should go hardcore beeline IMHO. We can then trade the tech to them and get them to sail over to Gandhi to start sharing techs asap.

We at least need a hardcare beeline to Optics. We can then start sending caravels with missionaries to convert other civs to Gandhi's religion. This will be critical for Gandhi to have the most friends. usually the converting window is quite short as many civs will adopt theocracy.

Tech

The Vikings learned the secrets of domesticating animals. Thusly they learned to appreciate the great beasts south of Nidaros.

Civ4ScreenShot0005.jpg

I chose writing as our next tech, but switched to 0% science as I wasn't sure if there was a team consensus on what to research next.

Nidaros

Finished the settler, built an axe and started a second one. The city will soon grow to size five, I suggest working the lake when it does. Also, let's build a trading post and a galley/trireme after the axe is done.

Rupert

Rupert had a messy encounter with a lion, but the smelling rug took the worst part of the deal.

Also, he spotted Genghis expanding westwards...

Civ4ScreenShot0004.jpg

... and eastwards.

Civ4ScreenShot0007.jpg

So, the mongol seems to have quite a lot of room for himself. Perhaps we should settle southwards to keep him from becoming big enough to be a problem?

The new land. Aka. the corn and the gold.

I stopped playing when Uppsala was founded.

Civ4ScreenShot0006.jpg

I set the city to build a worker, but we should work on a barracks while the city grows and then whip the worker. Our existing one is pasturing the pigs, after which he could build a route between our cities.

The brother and the buggers

Gandhi is starting to expand.

Civ4ScreenShot0008.jpg

And so are the barbs.

Civ4ScreenShot0009.jpg

I don't think that the barb city fits in with our dotmaps, so we'll just have to treat it as a "training center."

Hinduism was founded this round, but not by Gandhi. The little slacker...
It's a good thing that he has us vikings to make him strong.

Here's the save.

Good work, Stuge!

GK will take a while to reach us. I wonder if Gandhi has limited land. He settled both cities closer to us. This might suggest he has no room to expand westward and limited space to develop. If he is stuck with only 3-4 cities he will fall behind soon. And if I know Gyathaar at all he will have another big continent with peacelovers like Hatty and Cyrus cruising for space at warp speed. Or even the likes of England,America, MM, and the forementioned each on their own continent with nothing better to do than build space ship parts.

If this doom scenario turns out to be true, we have a lot of work to do. We should setup 1-2 culture capturable cities on our side to help G's easy crossover to our side of the continent.

Also Independence day will become very important. We need to take over our whole continent and leave it with minimal defense for Gandhi to grab. Meanwhile we build a huge army to sail across and settle in someone else's capital. From there we then have to extend the army and take all peace-loving space racers one by one. At the same time hoping G does his thing goes for space as well.

Uppsala build order:
It should build a library to pop borders and incorporate the corn, then barracks and then units. Meanwhile Nidaros can build workers/settlers.

Nidaros:
TP > workboats or galleys for exploration > Settlers / Wokers

just checked the save. There are horses to the NW of GK. If we take these it might prevent GK from building Keshiks!
