SGOTM 04 - Trash Team

Some notes for the next player:

Gandhi's trireme is currently exploring down our east coast and will endanger the clams at Nidaros before too long. I started a trireme there which will need whipping this turn or next to be finished in time.

I forgot to cancel our gold tribute to Khan, but we can do so now and negotiate a trade for wine instead, increasing our happy cap by 1.

We'll be ready to snatch Phyrgian in 2 turns and Avar not too long after that.

Good stuff, Patagonia

And nice to see another turnset

I mist admit it feels very strange to be building an empire only to leave it in the future.... Through all the thought and discussion you get attached to the cities and picture them in a few centuries from now. How they'll grow up and flourish as if they were your own children.

Instead we'll take a large force and be nomads, going from battle to battle. Travelling from island to island and from continent to continent. Never really feeling at home anywhere. Rarely being accepted. We'll pillage and rape the local inhabitants, demand their food, homes and gold without hesitation. Will we ever find what we are looking for?

I know its the life of true vikings', but alas it's not without sacrifice...

The life of true vikings is snivelling self-pity??

I thought the point of this variant was that we pillage and plunder our way across the globe in true Viking fashion while the Indians build us a spaceship!

That sounds like Viking fun to me...

Had a look at the save.

Nidaros seems to have stopped on the trireme. Pigswill if you restart the trireme and let it produce with three mountains (14 hammers total) You should be able to whip it for 1 pop instead of 2.
Or whip it now and use the overflow... :whipped:

It depends on the happy in Nidaros. If we whip for 2 with overflow we're working one less tile but happy has longer to recover before we whip again. I don't think I'll be playing tonight, probably tomorrow. I think we've more or less established our intermediate strategy until we get close to our next GS anyway.

Let's stick to a fairly rigid 15 turns per set for the next round.

If I've got the numbers right on epic (usually play normal speed so this may be a tad off), you can whip for 2 this turn or next turn (at current hammer rate), or turn the scientists into miners and whip for 1 next turn.

If you cancel gold to Khan and trade it for wine instead, that'll raise the happy cap in Nidaros by 1 to coincide with the whip so either approach would work in terms of stagnating back at size 6 until unhappiness wears off.

Won't be whipping anyone tonight regardless of the legitamcy of their parentage. Will be able to get to it tomorrow.

I've now got it and opened the save.

Bit of a problem. Ironclam only has two forest tiles inside its borders with another four in second ring. Chopping outside borders is inefficient and we have no culture to expand its borders. Ironclam is also food poor until it captures the clams from Gandhi so whipping isn't a short term solution either.

However, if I don't like a challenge why am I playing?

chopping outside cultural border is not a problem at all.
Slow build the forge while growing, whip it as soon as you're out of good tiles to work, keep the chopping for the colossus (mathematics + copper will make it a lot better, and whipping is not a good option for wonders).

If you want culture before that, pray for a religion ;). if really you see no other option, whipping a monument (= researching myst first!) is a somewhat bad option, but not THAT bad.
(You won't get the clams anyway)

I think 1 chop plus 1 whip will probably be enough to get the forge done. If you can whip down to size 1 to finish it, hiring an engineer and stagnating temporarily is probably the best option for Ironclam. Although the outside border chops aren't as efficient as they could be, the bonus from copper and forge will help to offset that (you'll get at least 63 :hammer: per chop outside the borders, at least 97 for the forests inside) and the wonder's only 375.

Bit of a curate's egg of a set (some parts good, some parts awful).

Our starting finances:

385bc.
Whip trireme in Nidaros 2 pop, 31h overflow. Keep 2 scientists.
Cancel gold tribute. Trade gold for wine with GK (he's pleased with us).

370bc.
Galley protects clams. Nidaros starts chariot.

355bc.
Gandhi's trireme runs away!
Great Lighthouse BIDL.
Battle of Phrygian. 4 axes vs 3 archers. Victory (no losses).
tt4b20000.jpg

340bc
Chop 29 hammers outside Birha for forge.
Nidaros builds chariot, starts spear.

325bc
Chop 29 hammers outside Birha for forge.

295 zzz

280 zzz

265 bc.
Uppsala completes worker, starts barracks (GK has keshiks).
GK converts to Judaism

250bc.
Whip forge in Birha for one pop.
Trade MC to GK for alphabet, mysticism and archery . (GK has no copper).

235 zzz

220bc zzz

205bc.
Our armies have been slowly moving towards Avar
GK sends a keshik and chariot to join in the 'fun'.
tt4b30000.jpg

At this point I could have attacked. I had a stackette of 3 axes against 2 archers; however fortified on a hill I had 25% combat odds. I'd probably lose 2 axes for 1 archer leaving GK an easy victory. On the other hand if GK attacked he'd probably win with the keshik and lose with the chariot leaving one weakened archer and an easy victory for us ;) .

Meanwhile workers chop forest in Birha for 101 hammers towards Colossus.
Uppsala builds barracks, starts spear.
Nidaros build spear, starts worker (at happy cap).

190bc.

Oops  .

160bc.
Discovery machinery, start compass (12turns at 70% research). Next GS due in Nidaros in 28 turns.
Another forest chopped in Birha for 101 hammers.

Gandhi has been pretty quiet on the tech front. Still doesn't have maths. Chances are he's got HR (look at them city sizes) and is heading towards feudalism.

Going to need at least one more chop for speedy Colossus ( should be about 70 hammers outside culture borders).

Save:http://gotm.civfanatics.net/saves/civ4sgotm4/Trash_Team_SG004_BC0160_01.CivWarlordsSave

Remconius is UP
Stuge is on deck (unless Cam_H wants/needs a swop so he can play over w/e).

I think it's a pretty good round cap'tain :goodjob:
doesn't GK have mathematics?
It's good to trade for as many things as possible with GK before getting rid of him ;).
Our trading partners won't remember, so there is no WFYABTA to fear.
And Gandhi is first in the score, which is perfect.
It's also a good thing going for a worker in Nidaros. We will need a few more IMHO.
nothing more to say, good work IMHO.
Next moves :
- finishing colossus,
- building up an army
- trading for every possible thing with GK
- killing GK

Sounds like a plan to me. It's inconvenient GK getting Avar from under our noses, but that city will cripple him economically so it's not the worst thing that could have happened.

In terms of military, it's probably best to focus on spears until we've got the iron connected for xbows/swords.

I didn't note it in my report but GK has got calendar (tho not willing to trade atm) so hopefully we'll be able to get it from him. Main problem we're facing is generating GS quickly. Having got alphabet thru trade and marble in Phrygian's BFC is it worth considering Glib? (Could be built in Nidaros withoutfear of GS contamination!)

With marble, I think it's OK to go for the great library. It's a nice gift for Gandhi.
do we have masonry?
Do we have polytheism?
