SGOTM 05 - Gypsy Kings

My only concern is about those planned caravels. It takes time and hammer to build them. And who could attack us if we go west? Do you think Asoka has so many caravels? I would sacrifice two galleys and just transport the units to the mainland...
I started the caravels before it dawned on me to go east with the Japan stack ... so I agree we could stop the caravels and make something else. I don't see us needing them so much to move west, at least at first.

Rules are rules!

The roster order is

Lehm - waiting
Conquistador 63 - waiting
hellwitch - skipped by request
da_Vinci - just played
Thrallia - skipped (no response in 24H)
g_storrow - UP NOW
Scout 214 - on deck
Ronnie1 - in the hole

Lehm is right about Izzy, or Cyrus. We can reach the mainland going west through either territory, but we must have OB with at least 1 of them.

We have OB with Cyrus already. Troops from WestIsle can't get to Asoka without going through Izzy, IIRC. So if the stack from Japan can damage Asoka, hit him first, but if not, maybe WestIsle troops hit Izzy, and the former Japan stack does too.

You are right of course, Izzy has the whole end of that continent in her culture. If she won't go for OB, we must attack her.

Friday nights tend to be good times for Scout214 to play, as he and I usually do some game online, and can brief him on the plan etc.

So, g_s, if you are not planning to play before Friday night, and if I find out from Scout214 that he's interested in playing Friday, how does swapping order sound? Up to you, of course, and I still have to confirm with him, but think about it and I should know more mid day.

The swap might cut time between the next couple of turnsets.

Sorry i am going to have to skip for the near future as rl needs a little more attention at the moment, i might post occasionally but i dont have the time for the actual playing at the moment.
sorry

Talked to Scout214 ... he'll play tonight. Move the Japan stack to India, leave a defender in Kagoshima ... anyone have a thought of who we might gift Kagoshima to if it comes under threat? Or even before it does?

Did 20 turns.

Gave the Japanese city back to Japan to stave off war. He eventually ended Open Borders but not until we got our troops there across his land to the NE.

Polished off Alex. Razed Delphi.

Took the Chinese city on the main continent. Smoked several of his ships. Still will not make peace. The turd.

Cozied up to Izzy. Converted to Judaism. Still will not agree to Open Borders. Holding us up getting troops to the W.

Declared war on Asoka. Took one city so far. Preparing to take Calcutta, keep it, convert spearmen to pikemen there because they have knights. Hoping we can get the massive army E of Samaria across Izzy lands to join the fight from Asoka's E.

Finished Guilds, making knights. Made many caravels to counter enemy or potential enemy ships. Using some of them to convoy galleys. Others are scouting China, others guarding seas against surprise attack from Japan. Building more galleys. Small army in Sparta, knight headed for Eastbridge. Here and there a theatre or coliseum to alleviate war weariness. We have many pikemen and macemen in the W waiting to get past Izzy. Researching gunpowder. Can up the research level once we upgrade spearmen to pikemen in Calcutta.

Cyrus put city near Sparta on that island. He's growing rapidly but we have decent relations with him.

The question is how to get troops past Izzy and/or Japan. Declare war on one of them? We are catching up in military unit technology for the moment but don't have knights in the vicinity yet and Japan has Samurai while Izzy has conquistadors. Japan still hates us. Asoka has few troops but a handful of knights. I'd love to get troops into China, too, to get rid of that pest.

We must plan on them staying ahead of us technologically and thus militarily. A temporary acceptance of a surrender or two might help us to catch up, especially if we have someone else to fight in the meantime.

Well, this game seems a bit chaotic to me. If we want to conquer the Indian cities get that artist there to make some space for the city and for our units. I would agree to attack Asoka, BUT we don´t get our units from the west isle to Asoka. Izzy won´t give us the OB (like always). And I don´t think we can bribe her in a war. I haven´t had a look if it is possible now but I can´t imagine. Izzy and Toku are first in power but we have to attack one of them first. I would say let´s go for Izzy because our units are already there. Of course no war with India at the same time! And lets switch back to christianity immediatly. Somewhere we have to start.... soon!

We are currently at war with Asoka ... razed one city for cash on the way. Thought was to take the city we are ajacent to, upgrade spears to pikes with cash (Asoka has several Knights).

I have to admit I lost track of the GA ... Qin had the sea lanes bottled up for a while at Athens, so he wasn't safe to move at first. Now, no OB with Toku so not clear how we get him to India

Another option is we are about 6 turns from a GP, most likely a GS ... I'll have to look if he would bulb astro. If so, would chopping some galleons and getting around Izzy to finish off Asoka and then hit Cyrus be the thing to do? I'm not anxious to hit Izzy at the peak of her Conquistador power if at all possible.

If not a GS, then maybe a golden age with the stranded GA? Hmm, I think we got a GP along the way too, come to think of it.

So if Izzy will never go OB, then I guess we either go to war with her or go around her.

Ronnie1 - UP NOWI got it, will post some plans a little later.

Make up turns from this inning can be made up before Lehm plays IF we get word that yopu can play in a timely manner.

Has anyone else been keeping up with the maintenance thread. MW was not successful in their effort as far as I can tell. I believe this game will prove to be more difficult than it originally seemed.

MW might be waging a huge disinformation campaign ... but if not, then the opportunity to finish better than they did gives me new life in this game!

I feel like all of our best laid plans have run into roadblocks at every turn in this game ...

In hindsight, my guess is that teams that headed due west right away, occupied WestIsle and the west tip of the large continent, and just poured troops in that direction at the outset may have achieved early victories.

We have a GProphet in Karak, the Artist in Athens. We can get another GP in Athens in five turns if we run two scientists ... maybe a 60% GS shot ... would he bulb part of Astro?

We can get astro to be 38 turns away at 50% sci and -31 gpt if we max commerce in all cities for a while. If we launch a GA now with the Prophet and Artist, we can cut into that, and if we get a GS, and if he bulbs some of Astro, maybe we are only 15 or so turns away?

I think getting Astro, giving us freedom to attack where we choose would be very valuable ... might even go get that pest Qin before tackling Izzy or Toku.

It is only five turns before we know if we get a GS or not, so maybe we launch the GA, (could wait until one turn before the new GP, so that if not a GS, then use the GA on hammers, or maybe better if not going for Astro ( not a GS) then revolt back to Christianity for the extra happiness before the GA to max its use. So perhaps the GA decision waits until after the new GP.)

Other choice is to hit Izzy ... which I think may be another brick wall with her conquistadors. I think that has the risk that she invades us! Maybe better to stay friends with Izzy and Cyrus, kill Asoka and Qin, then go from there.

dV

edit: well, GS has to get through philo, paper educ before Astro ... and artist has to get by Divine Right and Philo also (I think) ... so does not look like we will be bulbing Astro. Is Izzy building up for a war with one of her neighbors? Should we see if she moves on someone in the next few turns before we declare on her (if we are deciding to do that)?

I don't recall when she and we shared a war ... but that will die out before brothers of the faith goes up I suppose?

Here is a desparate idea ... if we give her WestIsle, would that make her happy enough for OB? We can always take it back pretty easily later. If I were sure it would give OB, I might make that choice.

Are you sure a GA can't enter closed borders? I recall sending GM's for trade caravans through AI closed borders in last GOTM. Maybe a case for WB testing?
About the idle GP, either we settle him in the shrine city or wait to send him to the big religion holy city when we capture it, if a shrine for it isn't built yet (I don't have access to the save now, but I think this is unlikely).

The easiest way to move the GA will be with a chain of caravels. I'll see if this is doable. The big question right now is do we declare on Izzy, or ???, what are our other options?

The only thing I see is we need to get troops to the front, which ever one we choose. I think we go west as it is closer. We need Pikes to counter Conquistadors, and lots of cats. I say we declare on Izzy when ready (troops in place).

I am going to switch back to Christianity 1st turn. I'm going to pop rush the happiness problems away after that if they remain.

Any words of wisdom would be appreciated.

Mh, so if we don´t fear Izzy let´s go for her. Make peace with Asoka. I don´t think it´s worth to take a city of him at the moment. But feel free to do what you think is best here.
Then we have to concentrate on building troops. I would stop those galleys/caravels. Let´s get that artist to the front... he could take his way westward. It takes him a longer time but I don´t think it matters.
We could move the troops placed in Asokas territory right now to the barb city for defence and attack from that point.

If we are sure that Izzy won't give OB then back to Christianity makes sense. I didn't realize that she would not give OB at any degree of positive diplo, when I suggested to Scout214 that we make the change to Judaism. Gettng OB with her was very attractive (still is), but I guess not possible.

We could use the GS and GA for a golden age ... is that better or worse than other uses? Might speed up that pike production if we need that to go at Izzy.

I am wondering if our former Japan stack can make progress by itself against Asoka for a while? Take the city we are next to, perhaps the barb LB will move to garrison it (or we could raze it), then if he takes the barb city, we move to retake it, give it back to the barbs to reestablish the culture border, then pick off his cities around it?

Maybe Izzy is planning to go for Toku or Cyrus soon (or Asoka?) ... maybe we give that a few turns to play out? If she goes to war, if we join her maybe we get that OB we need?
