SGOTM 05 - Trash Team

Thanks Stuge and Patagonia,

In stark contrast to the mood of the roster - I am just about at the point where I think that we call the whole Spanish war-thing off until we can get better units and more units on to the main continent. Perhaps we could still possibly take another of Isabella's fringe cities - but Toledo looks to me like it's too strong for six or seven Keshiks. If we had a gazillion Catapults, things might be different, but we don't. Pillaging the other tribes is still a possibility.

Isabella will give us 400-and-something (420?, can't recall) for 10 turns of Peace, which will give us time to ship more units over, and boost our research efforts towards the likes of Metal Casting.

Research-wise, is this a plan (?);
  • Currency next turn
  • Spend some turns on Metal Casting
  • Mecca pops Great Scientist for Alphabet
  • Swap from Metal Casting to Drama
Thanks again for your input. :)

I'm reluctant to move until we've reached a point of agreement. I'm quite happy to go with the Domination goal if that's the thinking. I'm also happy to re-visit the culture bridge to China proposition now that our accounts are 'on the improve'.

(Patagonia - I thought that I was going to be 'in the same boat' but our home-shift has been deferred until the end of the year.)

Based on the present circumstances, I agree with Cam the Yellow. ;)
Well, it's gonna slow down the whole plan, but I believe it's gonna change our path. For 10 turns (or more) we can emphasize more on developing Barcelona, and Seville, in order to build them our unit production cities, while bringing as many units (especially Cats) from our base as we have. Then we can get Toledo, as well we can speed up our attacks by producing units on the main continent.

I think we need to get Machinery & Civil Service to get better attacking forces. At present we should emphasize on producing Catapults, Swordsmen, & Archers, and forget about Keshiks any more.

I think we should take as much from spain as possible and try to sue for peace for something.
Alphabet is a good think to get in such a deal.
I would switch into domination mode for a not quite good reason : I never managed a conquest win in vanilla

Well, I am not good at counting the tiles. At present it's showing we have jus 11.73% land. We need 64%. What we need to get to win this game? I am not sure. I think if we forget about the bridges and we emphasize more on the main continent, the whole continent would be enough for us to get the domination victory. Lots of Cats (3-4 to sacrifice) + a few attacking units (Swords men or Macemen with City Raider Upgrade) + 1 unit good against Melee Units (Axmen or Macemen with Shock Upgrade) + 1 unit with Formation (Spearman is enough but if want, Pikeman) is a guranteed attack plan ( good against most of the city attacking). Now as we have few Keshiks already present on the main land, I don't think we should lose them. They can help us later to get many cities.

Cats are enough for us against any city garrison units.

I agree, let's have a peaceful turnset to build up forces in our new cities. We could send 2-3 axemen to the east to take that spanish city with 2 spearmen. Our Keshiks could go to pillage Cyrus and possibly Tokugawa. I am a little worried about Toku, he is quite strong and could come at Barcelona hard!

^ Thank goodness! I thought you guys were going to make me kill off our invasion force and then undo all of the progress made in the last two turnsets!

[Edit] Here 'tis

1190AD : Opening

Micromanaged a few cities including whipping a Catapult in Karakorum and changing the queue in Ning-Hsia replacing an Archer with a Catapult. Giving little hope for our Keshiks taking Toledo, I sent them towards Murcia.

1196AD

Discovered Currency, and dialled up Metal Casting.

Cyrus didn’t settle on the spot as anticipated and headed northerly.

As expected, Isabella upgraded her Archers to Longbows. Her War Elephant approaches the Barbarian city of Chehalis.

Whipped Courthouse in Beshbalik.

1202AD

Take Murcia – lost three Keshiks (versus two Longbows + one Axeman) relying on a second Keshik in each case to clean up.

sgotm5_1190_end_murcia.jpg

With Murcia (Spice-Fish-Corn-Banana) ours, we settle for Peace (unable to get Isabella to give me a worthwhile technology);

sgotm5_1190_end_isa_deal.jpg

The lifting of war weariness relieves a lot of unhappiness, and much of the turnset is spent working food-heavy tiles to improve populations.

Due to the passive Barbarian effect, there was about 200:science: put towards Alphabet, and I opted to self-research it rather than burning the Great Scientist on this now rather inexpensive technology due in 6 turns at mild financial deficit. As such, swapped away from Metal Casting for the time being in order to chase Drama.

1208AD

Sardis (Persia) is settled on our linking bridge island.

1214AD

A Japanese Longbow creeps towards Barcelona and pillages its Horses Pasture. The garrison there (two City Raider Axes and an Archer) don’t have convincing odds of taking this Longbow out, so we send for some Keshiks.

1220AD

The ‘domestic’ SoD of Keshiks in Old Sarai land north of Sardis. I begin promoting a few of them, and then hold off and decide that it’s better to capture than auto-raze the city, so I let it be for now.

Mecca’s Courthouse is whipped.

The Keshiks approaching the pillaging Longbow pass by a new Japanese settlement in Nara.

sgotm5_1190_end_nara.jpg

1226AD

Two Japanese Longbows head towards Nara, which is defended by a single Catapult. The Catapult and the good people of Nara perish.

1232AD

The approaching Japanese Longbows do a quick turn-about and disappear into the fog of war.

Murcia comes out of revolt, and starts on a semi-complete Courthouse thanks to the assistance of a couple of chops.

The dreaded pillaging Longbow too perishes – but not before destroying a Farm and taking out a Flanking II Keshik that failed to withdraw.

1238AD

Keshiks approach Edo for pillaging options, but in a moment of logical cowardice it’s decided to move them away due to lack of cover from support troops. Edo had three Spears and a variety of other nasties.

Alphabet is self-researched and Drama is next up. Note that Literature is a quick-research of about three turns thanks to the passive Barbarian effect; the Heroic Epic might be well worth considering in light of this.

1244AD

Old Sarai completes its Archer and a Catapult is queued.

A Catapult starts chipping away at the defences of Sardis and Galleys are moved out of the way in case Sardis chooses to work the seafood in order to grow. When it gets to two population I believe that we should take it.

Murcia’s Courthouse and Barcelona’s Hindu Temple are both whipped.

1250AD

Three Keshiks and an Axe are making their way to the lightly defended Delhi – just the one Longbow but it’s on a Hill with 45% defence. Could be achievable, but seems risky now.

sgotm5_1190_end_screenie.jpg

In order to open up the Forbidden Palace (Barcelona?), Ning Hsia’s Courthouse is whipped – making six in total. Seville is working on one nonetheless – but the :hammers: contribution is small.

Several units are making their way to Old Sarai for shipping off to new lands.

Cities at end of turn - Mecca can pop a Great Scientist 'at will' with very few :gp: points to go, although I opted to work the Cottages instead for much of my turnset;

ahh.. devious Cam! Editing the response. That's why I didnt receive a new message email....

Nice turnset. Good job capturing Murcia, good landing point for our troops.

Question, shouldnt our troops head for the continent? What is your rationale for taking Sardis first? Defense?

Our attack force and production base seems to be ramping up nicely. soon we'll have loads of cats swarming the continent.

cabert are you in the mood for war yet? Otherwise Stuge can go first.

I can't play really.
I'm sick, and can't focus on anything for long.
I'm not terribly sorry for ruining my own GotMs, but I don't want to spoil this game for you guys.
Better let someone whose eyes are open play the next set.
Hopefully I'll be back with a brain at the end of the week.

Cabert,

'Yes' - get well soon!

Patagonia,

Nice to see you're still checking in! :)

Remco,

I assumed that we're agreed to go for Domination, but until we get a lot more Catapults we'll be struggling. Taking Sardis ensures we keep the bridge to the main continent 'open' pre-Astronomy and capturing it will reduce the likelihood of Persian marauders near home and add a small % to land and population. I felt that it was useful strategically, although I agree that a few of the Keshiks could shuffle off to the main continent. I also assumed that we'd take Valencia too when we re-declare war on Isabella. With all that said - the roster may not wish to take this island in the short-term, which I guess we can discuss.

Looks like I'll be playing the Man Who Brings Good Children Catapults.

Tech

Researched drama and MC. Civil service is selected as next tech, 14 turns away.

Domestic

Mostly building catapults, though I started a forge in Mecca and a library in Karakorum. Ptolemy (GS) was born in Mecca, he'd bulb philosophy. Maybe an academy in Karakorum?

War

I decided to leave Delhi alone. Trying to hold on to it would have been too much of a stretch. I decided to raze Sardis instead. We have a settler waiting in New Sarai for that island.

Civ4ScreenShot0003-1.jpg

There's our fleet heading for the continent. Catapults and a keshik and an axe. I also added some workers, our mainland is quite fully improved.

Now here's the surprise:

Civ4ScreenShot0004.jpg

I'm sorry but I only spotted those suckers on my last turn. Those two empty Japanese galleys hung outside Beshbalik for the whole set, so I quickly stopped paying attention to the "the enemy has been spotted"-messages. I realised something was wrong when that longbow pillaged our iron mine.

I'm not sure if we can hold. I even sent the warrior from Beshbalik into Turfan for MP duty. Toku is willing to make peace for Barclona, though we have drama and currency to offer him. Perhaps he'd agree to a ceasefire?

Sorry for leaving such a mess for the next player. Stupid sneaky AI mind-trick...

Dealing with Toku..

Whip units in Ning shia and Beshablik. Probably axemen to deal with melee units. Send archer from Ning to Besha. Send units to Ning shia.

Got it.

I will play it later tonight. Well, it's better until that time, you guys recommend me what's better.

Thanks.

Will join you later.

^ Wondering the same thing!

As per usual ... I can't access the game (because of the 'weekend warrior' thing) so can't offer any meaningful insight to the Japanese invasion and 'what not'.

I have the feeling the game is set back a little by the recent event of Toku coming for tea. It's a nasty situation, but it is one we can deal with.

We do need to up naval defenses to prevent this happening again. Toku just sailed all the way till the end without us noticing.

lordofcivs seems to have gone awol, so we'll skip him.

The means the roster becomes:

Remconius (UP)
Cam_H (on deck)
cabert
Stuge
patagonia (skip till Sept 23)
lordofcivs (awol)

Lurking: Pigswill

But I think it is fair to give cabert his turn now for the one he missed. Then cabert can resume in the regular roster after me and Cam. This to compensate for missed turns.

Let us know, cabert if you are interested in the extra turn tomorrow/friday, or if you just want to pick up after Cam.
