SGOTM 06 - Chokonuts

We shouldn't split up the forces too much. We become vulnerable to counterattack, travelling in large groups is much safer.

I've only managed to play one turn and we are in trouble.

Persian counterattacks have arrived from the south and the north. We are going to lose Rosskilde, Haithbu and Bjorgvin we have not enough consolidated troops near either city to be able to contemplate defending them. Most of our better troops i.e. Maces are CR promoted so cant defend. :(
I think the only option we have is to retreat as best we can. The troops in Bjorgvin are dead, Haithbu can retreat back to Niadoros/Uppsala and we have two boats to rescue some of the ones stranded near Rosskilde.
Where do we retreat to?? We can consolidate in Niadoros and Rosskilde but are we going to be able to hold on there until Chem?? Do we go all the way back to our continent until Chem??

I have attached the file here if people need to look. I can carry on when we have decided what to do. Do I need to upload it through the submission page??

Definitely retreat out of those front line cities. The Bjorgvin troops may live with a little luck, as they may just take the city on the next turn giving time to get the boats up. I don't know if leaving one unit as a sacrifice in the city is better than clearing the city out. My guess is complete abandonment is better since the AI may have these guys assigned to city capturing rather than opportunistic pillaging and killing.

Possibly try to assemble on the hill south of Haithbu for a counterattack. Once they are in the city our city raider promotions become good again.

As we go forward some defense promoted Musketmen are a must until the Grenadiers are on line. Our production might will ultimately prevail, but we will need some careful play in the meantime.

We should let the Great Defender (T3K) comment as he has some experience with pulling off desperate defenses.

I think we can try to make a stand at Haithabu. They key will be to keep the three main stacks of Cyrus’s troops from attacking one of the major Viking cities simultaneously while they are at full strength. To do this I would propose that:

• Withdraw all troops from Bjorgvin and send them to Haithabu except for the pikeman. I would promote our pikeman and leave him behind just so Saladin can’t march in with his lone camel archer and take the city. Given Cyrus’s troops are wounded, the hope is that when they take the city from pikeman they will stop to heal and will leave some of the troops in this stack behind for defense.
• Withdraw all troops possible from Roskilde. First, move all troops located on the outside of Roskilde into the city. Next, load the two Galleons with the war elephant, the maceman with 4 XP, the double city raider maceman, 1 regular macemen, and 2 full-strength trebs. 1 Mace and the rest of the trebs will have to stay behind and take their chances. Take these two loaded galleons directly into Haithabu, unload them, and then move out of the city (there is just enough movement points to do this).
• Move the archer in Nidaros toward Haithabu. It would be good to upgrade him to a LB if possible.
• There are 2 empty galleons and 1 loaded galleon just southwest of Uppsala. Send 1 of the empty galleons home. Next, drop off a pikeman into the city (without moving) from the loaded galleon then walk on both maceman (1 to the already loaded, 1 to the empty galleon). One the next turn these units can be unloaded directly into Haithabu and the galleons will have one remaining movement point to exit the city.
• Move up all troops near Haithabu into the city and promote them.
• Sacrifice the cat in Haithabu against the stack next to the city. The cat will have a 25% chance of withdrawal. The idea is to put some collateral damage on that stack while there is time. I have found that the AI tends to lose some aggressiveness if its stacks have taken some collateral damage.

With all of these moves you would have 10 macemen, 1 axeman (that you may want to consider paying the 179 gold to upgrade to another mace), 1 war elephant (4 star) and 2 trebs. The next turn 2 maceman, 1 pikeman and 1 treb will arrive from Uppsala galleons, 4 trebs and 2 cats will arrive from Bjorgvin, the archer (which could be an LB for 134 gold)from Nidaros, and, depending on where Cyrus hits, maybe the maceman and the remaining three trebs from Roskilde via galleon transport.

Assuming Cyrus doesn’t crush Haithabu on the next turn, we should then harass his stack or stacks near the city with cats and trebs. If we can weaken them enough then we should go on the offensive. The key is to try to trade 1 mace for 1 rifleman, with the idea that we lose the first mace on the attack but the second mace finishes the rifleman off.

Of course all of this will be heavily dependent on whether more Cyrus or Saladin troops show up. :shifty:

As far as back in the homeland, I few suggestions/comments:

• Khosian has a workboat that is setting on fish, but not working the fish. This one has been missed for a while.
• Take a quick look at general tile management for optimal usage.
• Need to get missionaries out to Dover and Brighton. The latter will allow culture expansion to get deer.

Anyway, that’s the suggestions. Thoughts?

Have had tinternet issues last couple of days only just got back on. I havn't checked the details but I trust the big mans ideas. By my judgement?? I think the land to the SW of the front is a small area cut off from the main area of Cyrus/Saladin. Thus, not many more troops will appear from there more likely to come from the north if this helps in anyway??

What are the implications if Cyrus attacks our 6 cats/trebs on the way to Haithabu from Bjorgvin rather than directly attacking the city?? These would be easy kills and if it gains his troops promotions they could gain extra advantage. Is the AI likely to do this??

I'm going to be away for weekend and thinking that there is a deadline fast approaching for this game maybe should pass it on, I think Termi is next up anyway and as he has been labelled the great defender maybe is time to bring in the specialists!!

I will upload the current save so it can be taken up whilst Im away whatever is decided.

T3K lives for this kind of thing. I am good with his plan.

Oh sure. Significantly out-gunned is always the most fun position to play from. Heaven forbid I have a game where I'm the big-guy and get to cut through the enemy like a hot knife through butter! :mischief:

Having said that ....

I have the game and will play shortly. Wish me luck!

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times ....

First, the bad news ....

I did everything I could, but as of the my last turn I abandoned Haithabu for the AI to capture unopposed next turn.

I was able to fend off Cyrus and his riflemen for 9 turns. However, when Cyrus sent a third round of reinforcements combined with a few Viking riflemen and Arabian camel archers, it was finally too much. The last straw was some amazing die rolls for the AI where 4 of Saladin's troops took out units that they shouldn't have (the 2 camel archers took out a war elephant and a pikeman, a crossbowman took out a barely-wounded triple city defender LB, etc.). :gripe:

Now for the good news ...

We have musketman. :woohoo:
We were the first to circumnavigate the globe. :cooool:
We are 8-10 turns from grenadiers.
Religion has been spread to 4 additional cities.
The economy is a bit more stabilized. :king:
I started pilliaging the AI's fishing resources. :mischief:

My suggestions:

  • Ask Cubbies to play next while MD is out of pocket
  • Possibly set up a defensive position on the hill that is between Nidaros and Haithabu. The next fall back position would be Nidaros. See the attached screenshot.

    SGOTM6 - Defend Hill0000.JPG
  • Keep producing musketmen for defense. The LBs were holding their own against riflemen with the auto promotions. Musketmen should be a noticable improvement.
  • Continue pushing out missionaries. Liverpool and Uppsala still need religion (the heathens!).
  • Continue using a couple of galleons to pilliage the AI fisihing resources.
Once we get grenadiers I think we can really begin a solid push into enemy lands. We just need to play the next couple of turn sets carefully and watch the seas that enemy galleons don't show up on our homeland.

Looks like April 14th may be the deadline. Apparently most teams have finished already.

The tactics are pretty straight forward from here, Chemistry and Steel, grennies and cannons, try to take over the world.

We should try and rotate the save a squick as we can. Still stop if a tricky situation comes up or you're unsure what to do but otherwise just push on.

We're not yet quite at the SGOTM01 rush yet, where I think the remaining team (me, ngraner, Terminator and McArine) all played twice in three days or something like that

Well...I basically held our position with the mentality that they will not get by our defensive hill...mission accomplished.

We now have chemistry! and numerous grenadiers in production. I selected steel, but we could easily grab drama.

No one has astronomy yet which is very good.

Spread religion to those heathens in Liverpool and Uppsala .

Great General was born and since I wasn't sure what to do with him, I let him sleep in Athens.

I'm attaching a screenshot of our forces on the hill - remember that musketmen get that nice hill defense upgrade.

We should definitely be able to hold our position for now - we just need to get grenadiers up and running now.

Unfortunately I did not make a lot of progress other than attrition of enemy units and Grenadier production. We have 39.5% of the land and Steel in 10. There is one Settler on a boat and another in production. Haitabu was taken and then given back. We are held up on our defensive hill position.

Merged the Great General into Athens as it is our Heroic Epic city. Switching this cities tiles over to production is planned.
Switched research to get Drama in 3 and build up funds for upgrades.
We received a Great Engineer in Athens. We could use him for the Ironworks or a Golden Age if we can get one more GP.
1655: We recapture Haitabu.
1664: A ferocious battle a Bjorkvin. Saladin came at us with a large stack of Camel Archers and other units. The Camel Archers rolled well and killed many Musketmen in the IBT. Since our remaining units including 6 healthy Trebuchet were sitting ducks, we attacked the city killing 5 units as compensation.
1667: More ferocious fighting at Haitabu. We pull back to our defensive hill and abandon Haitabu, but the enemy has also been hurt.
