SGOTM 07 - Fifth Element

We could be shooting ourselves in the foot with the UN. By activating it, we could end up with someone else running the show. That would be a disaster...losing Bureaucracy. I can't see how the votes could ever work out. I don't think we can "get lucky". The voting is pretty cut and dried, not much if any randomness to their behavior.

You mean as opposed to having somebody else build it and not even be a candidate for the election? That sounds like a wonderful plan, let's do that.

We have many turns left and only computers-fission-Refrig-genetics-(maybe)ecology that are "normally" researched by the OCC. There is probably time to take the detour to artillary/Rocketry, but we would need to do it starting next turn if we want to do artill. Maybe just finish computers, then see if we can get Artill free and research Rocketry to give to Liz. Be sure to give steel and rifle to everyone immediately so they will get Artill. These are not techs that we should hang onto. Also, make sure they all have the pre-reqs for Biology so someone gets that soon.

Everyone? Even the "hated" civs?

I think I shouldn't have promoted our units before upgrading, and I'm not sure if I did all the trading/gifting correctly. But at least we didn't get attacked :p

Sounds like some good trading. Glad you weren't shy about passing things around. I thought we'd get Steel by now so we could get some insight into Artill. It'd be nice to trade for Steel and Artill and reserach Rocketry next. What else is open? Fission? That's usually something they need help researching. Do we have the prereqs to start that? If not then MassMedia could be an option if Biology is not ready to trade yet. I can't look at the save for a while.

Looks good dutch. I can't check the save right now either, but everything sounds good. I think we should get that DP with Asoka. He'll dump us when we go PA with Liz, but let's keep our options open as long as possible.

I decided to replay my old save but delay the PA this time to see if it would speed me along. It did. I see now that the PA does speed up research when you both research together, but the boost isn't as much as it appears from the tech time-bar jump because in a PA the techs cost more to get in the first place. (Thanks for pointing out that thread, dutchfire.) Trading is faster, but we'll have to watch for two things, I think. (1) I didn't have any problem losing my potential PA partner to another alliance, but I don't know how this will play out in the real game. (2) We shouldn't wait too long to PA or there will be a backlog of space parts for Liz to complete in her three-city empire. Thanks again for the insights, WastinTime. These "little" extras are the things that would take forever to find out on my own.

Turn 190, 1300 AD: Sparta has been captured by the Incan Empire!!!
Hmm... Alex is getting beaten up.

I think I shouldn't have promoted our units before upgrading
Then the units would've lost their XP, so you did well.

Nice sarcasm. ;) But the point is valid - won't someone else build it anyway, and so we are still at risk of enforced civic changes? I don't know... it's been ages since I've pursued late game diplo.

Nice TS anyway. I can't check the save, so can't really comment on future techs, but am loving the rate of trade. Can someone post a glance and tech trade s/s, pls?? Can anyone suggest a reason not to DP Asoka. ( - is that in bad taste?) Sounds ok to me.

edit: Power graphs - I was pretty sure some teams would go for conquest. I wonder what units they're going with? 1000AD - maybe upgrades to infantry?

Yea, those power jumps have to be conquest or Dom. I'll be very disappointed with the map/game designer if he made our continent large enough for domination without ever going to the other land mass. That's not really "world domination" is it? I don't have a lot of respect for conq/dom in general, but that's mostly because it's done at marathon speed. I'm sure normal speed, and OCC, and extra opponents make it a very challenging game.

domination OCC? That'd need a permanent alliance, wouldn't it?

In one of my games, 1820 AD launch, no one built the UN.

In my other game, 1750 AD launch, I gave Liz Radio so she got MassM and built the UN. Then, as soon as the vote pops up, I sign a PA with her. I use that event as a trigger to sign in most of my games like this.

However, since we only have 1 shot at this, I see your point and feel the fear too of losing civic options. Instead of ignoring the UN and hoping it's not a problem, I can support a more active role. Either, try to get Liz to built it and PA with her. Or build it ourselves. Has anyone done any analysis? like who are we up against? Who would likely vote for us? for them? etc. I think if we build it ourselves, that's not a big hit to research, but I'd really like to not research MassMedia. It's a much bigger gamble to trade for MM and built UN though. Discuss....

domination OCC? That'd need a permanent alliance, wouldn't it?

Yes, but if you just wipe out our continent except for 1, they will fill in the space. More likely the approach would be to beat a city down to 1 defender and let your partner take it.

Don't count this out as a path some will take. Some are like me and know only really one way to play. I like using these exercises to learn a few things.

The sheer number of troops required though could seriously nuke an economy if you aren't taking the cities. It would for sure require a PA.

Ummm... Who's up? On the last roster I could find it looked like Sweetaschon -- but if he can't play then it looks like it might be me. Wazzzup Sweeta? ;)

Still no go for me, I still haven't recovered the lost items from my wallet, so it could be a few more days. Skip me until further notice. Also, I notice that the game has been extended until August 2?th, so no rush.

The UN - I'm really uninformed without the save or other info, so I can't really comment. To be honest, I don't recall having too much trouble with UN civic votes in my test wins, especially if MM is not pursued, as the time between UN and launch is small. What have other people found in tests?

I think Saladin would be our main opponent in a vote, I suppose, since he seems to be the biggest. I don't think he has many good friends.

Okay, I've got the save. Will post a plan by tomorrow and plan to play Monday night or Tuesday depending on how the discussion goes. I'll aim for 10 turns (191-201), unless someone wants to suggest something different. (Were we going to go by techs researched, or not?)

Can someone post a glance and tech trade s/s, pls??
Ask and ye shall receive... ;)
I'll try to provide more details on available trades once I've had a chance to review the situation in-game.

Surely take steam power from Cyrus for Electricity. Then trade that to Liz/Asoka hopefully for steel or biology. What are we researching next? We did not plan so well for post-computers. It would be a good time for Anarchy if we needed to change something, but I don't think we do. If we can get Bio then we only waste that 1 turn.
