SGOTM 07 - Unusual Suspects

Off we go!

Turn 11

Beijing completes a worker, and Starts barracks [15].

Turn 12 Hindu FIDL!

Turn 16 Masonry in. We start wheel, and switch production to Pyramids. Worker will start working stone, and then wheel should be in by that time.

Yes indeed, I didn't read between the lines.;) It happened before masonry was researched. :D

Well, enough for today...:sleep:

Fantastic.

I'm going to say accept the offer, and revolt back when we can if Washington isn't going to go after us. A free +1 is always nice.

I would agree with turning down Asoka's conversion request. Looks like we share borders with only Washington, so best to be careful not to tick him off. And although our immediate neighbors are not aggressive, having only Warriors for defense makes me a bit nervous. Maybe we'll need Archery as insurance if a more aggressive civ is out there with open borders with Washington later on.

Fantastic.

If we were spiritual then yes I would have to agree. Since we’re not, we lose 2 turns in anarchy which is costly. Notice we have furs and we should control that silver node south before Washington, which is plenty for now.

About defense. Let’s be realistic, we do have a warrior only, but after pyramids we get barracks in 3 turns, and walls soon enough as well. Don't forget they all count in power graph as soldiers. Besides, we get archery from alphabet soon enough. Chances of Washington going after us with archers is virtually zero. We don't even have a single diplomatic modifier with him.

Let’s not get sidetracked here. This will obviously be a quick tech race, and with OCC everything small counts,ie. what tiles to work and when , and what should worker do and when.

I encourage you all to do some testing here (if you have time of course) especially now that we know our immediate neighbors. I guess we can use our old test games just throw in these 3 civs. See if you can beat the GL before 975BC on our test games. I’ll lay down the exact plan how to do this.

As I suspected, we are being given every possible favour in this game because it is Deity!!! I imagine we'll easily have all future resources in our boundaries as well.

I found using the currently suggested tech tree works, while aiming for Alphabet, there wasn't much to build (barracks & walls) so built up a few archers and got the boats out on the crabs... once having your first archer build time isn't as critical (until we hit our tech aims) so getting some growth into the city is gold. Build library ASAP and when thats done should be set for the GL... with that strategy I had no problem getting GL, it actually felt like a leisurely pace.

We need to be nice to America because their city is right on our border and they're going to be miffed about that... So I agree about turning Asoka down, but whats the likely hood of us still getting Buddhism (or are we hoping that America will change?).

Good show!

Well after barracks, the best course of action is for Beijing to stay at size 3 until we have barracks [2] and a work boat [2] done simlpy because this will net greater production/food/research output later. Beijing will then start walls but continue with library, and finish walls after it. Now the trick here will be to find the best way to utilize those tiles (clams, fur, mines, representation scientists) so we get best overal output after we build library (right now the best date for Alphabet is move 63! Working tiles differently net us 64,65 etc, but i never get it before 63.). I did some testing and will post it tomorrow. For now, here's the pic from my last move, I turned down Asoka, if anything, religion can get us in trouble early here so no need to risk it.

I think we might as well stay the course on our plan on the way to the Great Libiary.

From there we should of course build the Epic. We might consider a music detour for the artist to settle.

From then, the question is do we want to go 'Wondering'? Production will be amazing and it will cost us little to build wonders inbetween troops...thoughts?

Let's not rush here let's sit on this position for a couple of days, looks like we'r the only team who played this far.

hmm i guess after we get the Great Library since we wont have time before that.
Adopting a religion will be very powerful in this game - pacifism/org. religion, but we should be careful when we get it.

On a more strategic issue/geography
so far we see two choke points, one on Washington’s border and one inside India. Controlling (read: defending) these points might prove useful later.

Okay, questions!

Why build the barracks and not the granary now?

I see you researched Fishing - is it currently of any use? Why did we need to self-research it instead of waiting for Alphabet?

Why did we go to Writing through Pottery, not through Animal Husbandry?

I'm having problems.

I don't have BTS. I have Warlords. I have the latest HOF.

I tried to open the file. I get a note that assets are protected...I click OK and game crashes. Help?

...And, I think we can finish both before the city wants to grow again. And, I think that is because a grainery is of more use to us than the alternatives. Which leads into the then obvious Fishing tech choice.

You need to be in vanilla version of the game. This is not Warlords or BTS. I have got the game so I will have a look at the game later on today and give some insights into the game. So far our first objective has been done. :D

So as far as I am correct, we are going for straight for Alpha now?

@Vra
Well, well, you haven't been reading what I was writing, now were you?:trouble: ;)

You are playing the HOF-1.74.002 mod with BTS dll's, are you?:hmm:

Don't think that it matters where you have Civ4 installed. You just load the HOF mod first and then the save I've posted. You also need to have BTS installed or corresponding BTS dll's. I suggest you download the current GOTM and try loading it. Test game I posted will open without this requirements, it isn't protected.

Are you sure about the dates? I've just checked my autolog:

T31(2760 BC) Stonehenge
T46(2160 BC) The Pyramids
T54(1840 BC) missed Parthenon

1560 BC and 1520 BC is T61 and T62, you must have built it before that.

Tried twice, same result.

In another game, AI built Pyramids before 2160 BC , that's why my idea for this game was to skip Stonehenge and go directly for Pyramids.

We are playing the same game! I also still don't understand why you didn't have trouble with WFYBTA. Strange:confused:
Sorry for asking again, but do you have HOF mod loaded and BTS dll's?

Ok, I have just opened the save.

Here are some ideas:

1) Barracks were in the queue before we started with The Pyramids. They will be built in 2 turns, it is logical to finish them. Regarding power, we also have to remember that population also counts!

The Inner Workings of the Demographics Screen Explained by Robi D

Spoiler :

Factor 1- Population points. For every two population points from all your cities you get 1000 soldiers. So;
1pop = 0 soldiers
2pop= 1000
3pop= 1000
4pop= 2000
5pop= 2000
6pop= 3000 and so on.

Not so much, but still.

2) Let's start with workboat while stagnant next. When fish gets harvested, switch from stone to fish, while building a granary.
I haven't tested this with the old test game, but it seems to me this is best.

3) Just before the population increases, let's revolt to representation. It is better to revolt earlier when we are producing less than later when we'll be producing more. We don't get slavery here, but we can get it later after we get GL if we have to.

4) I suggest we play for ~10 turns each at this point, there is a lot of micro management to do.

...looks like we'r the only team who played this far.

Yes, what are the other teams plotting? ;)
Those graphs on the progress page are really interesting!

I Suspect(TM) that:

1) Trash Team have decided for more initial defense then others
2) CRC are growing a bit slower than we are for some reason
3) Misfits and Smurkz have the same strategy: going stagnant on size 2 and rushing for SH

Are they going for The Pyramids as well? Will they miss the GL?
Will Asoka attack the infidels or will Toku wake up one morning with a strange concept of "opening borders" on his mind? :lol:

What will happen next, ladies and gentlemen? Stay tuned for the next episodes of SGOTM 7! ;)

Oh, and I've just made three posts in a row, maybe I should go and do some RL work now! :lol:

Glad you decided to join us ba|bes. All those question have been answered already…like a 100 times. But I will make a short summary again. Since you are a member of this team anyway maybe you could grant us with your calculations instead of only questions?

1 Barracks have to be finished , they were in queue before pyramids. They also count as soldiers in power graph and we still only have a warrior.
2 Fishing is of IMMIDIATE use, because right after barracks, we are building 2 work boats, to work clams (4f3c) in preparation for library , alphabet, and great library. Because of this...
3 We don't need Animal Husbandry. Sheep on plains are not good for us right now.
4 Edited. I'll post new findings later.
