SGOTM 08 - Chokonuts

As Oz said we should retake Nobamba asap.

When Ulundi comes back online we should use the whip here to get some needed buildings online asap eg chouse granary library.

We are 7 turns away from first GP in Central and 4 turns away from HG. Is it worth moving a couple of citizens away from working hills to other squares. This would improve growth and science and improve percentage for Priest slightly.

As for techs I think IW or Aesthetics. Probably Aesthetics as OZ suggested we will be able to trade for IW soon Ai tends not to research Aesthetics.

We're going to peaceful expansion and wonder building stage now and Aesthetics has at least 2 wonders with it (Statue of Zeus and Parthenon). We do need Iron Working sooner rather than later so wer can get cottages up and running.

We also need another settler (maybe out of elephant city) for around the choke point.

Ok - I can play tomorrow night.

I will take Nobamba, grab Aesthetics then IW, and start building up the cities. Also possibly kick off another settler.

If we are looking to build another wonder straight away should we change to Monotheism first then do double civic switch to OR for production bonus.

10 more turns complete:

- captured Nobamba...Shaka is no longer!
- researched Monotheism to get Organized
- started IW because we need cottage help and are still able to build other wonders before getting Aesthetics (3 turns left)
- revolted to Organized Religion and Slavery
- Completed Hanging Gardens
- Started Pyramids (11 turns to go...we might actually get this with a chop coming and some slavery)
- Great Prophet born and used for Shrine

Notes for coming up play:
- found Joao just west of Shaka's land
- found barb city just south of Nobamba
- have not used slavery yet and we need to in Elephantastic

Now we're in Organised Religion and have a shrine, we should get missionaries out of the holy city and spread confusedness.

I would definately chop rather than whip in the capital, its strength is the production at high population. Happy to whip courhtouses, granaries, libraries and the like in other cities though.

Pyramids are a good wonder for us (GE points and representation).

If I get a chance I'll download the save and check it out for more comments.

I think mc-red is UP.

Great stuff everyone. I'll pick up the save later today. I'll probably have some questions at that point.

edit: Now have the save.

Had a quick look at the save...

Chokocentral is at happy cap and is working a 1f1h tile, when there is a 1f2h tile not being worked, switching does not bring Pyramids down but does give an extra hammer per turn. After Pyramids, if we switch to representation, we can go Artemis or Chichen Itza (Artemis for me), might want to throw a granary in first.

Jumbo City is unhappy. I'd swap from a 2f tile to the jumbos (1f2h1g), starts to starve but we'll want to whip this one (maybe a colosseum or baray or settler).

Ulundi needs workers to mine those hills. This is another super production city and can get some wonders produced. Maybe whip the courthouse in 2 turns into a worker and then Chichen Itza?

Nobamba needs to whip the courthouse when it can then produce missionaries.

Thoughts?

ok read all the comments in last few posts will try to incorporate as much as I can.

Some pre flight comments and will wait before playing if someone wants to add anything:

Chokocentral: Chop+mine will complete in 4 then worker will go chop something else.
move to 2h+1f tile. Leave GG for now? what if i get pyramids do i settle to get the beakers in rep.

elephantastic: will build baray for a couple of turns then whip and should end up with lib+baray turn 4 or 5 then i think settler or do i grow while building something else then go to settler. Will switch to phants.
Worker building cottage in 4 do will start clearing jungle/buildng cottage with this worker. Food and health poor i think baray is a good build.

Ulundi: what is long plan for this city has decent production capability (though shares one gh with nobama). GP farm? cottage spam on lots of grassland? will immediately whip court for 2 pop. Regrow while building lib.
worker completes mine in 6 then riverside cottage.

nobama: will this be ultimately the wall street city. Does that mean farms for merchants or usual cottage spam? will whip court for two pop around turn 5-6 and then build missionary.

IW in three then aesthetics don't see any easy way to get marble hooked for now.

-1 gpt currently i think whip in ulundi will fix that

milatary: Does cat continue to explore Jao terriotry or come bank and join southern axe for eventaul assault on barb city.

potential city site sw of pigs and the rice/cow/fish city 2 north of gungun's rice. THe latter should be pretty nice once the jungle is cleared.

this will leave one nice tile for a panama canal sw of where gungun stood.
axe in north west continues north exploring.
axe in north goes east to clear two dark coastal tiles and then back to rice/cow/fish city site.

If make the tile swap in Jumbo City, library comes down to 1 turn, let it finish then start colosseum, settler or baray and then 2-whip it.

Explore as much as possible with whatever we have, we need to find other AI, so we can start trading.

I see Ulundi as a secondary wonder producing city.

This is a weird game, so don't think about cities in the traditional sense (GP farm, Wall St City etc), just how we can get wonders out of them (this of cource includes national wonders). I'd say we set Chokocentral and Ulundi up as our world wonder centres and cottage everything else we can afford to to finance our empire.

Completed turnset:
The first attachment is the state of the world.
Our axes uncovered clams north of phantatstic and marble beyond a chokepoint north west of ulundi. Southern lands beyond the barbs are shown in the final attachment.
We finished iron working to discover iron in the mysteriously bald spot in the jungle (mystery solved ;) )
Bad news struck twice as you can see in attachment 2 and 3. A slave revolt in ulundi and we were pipped to the pyramids but not before sinking two forest chops into the disappointment . I hope that SOB Capac is not out there in the fog.
I built a granary in 1 and then decided to spend a turn building a confused missionary before starting on chichen itza. Missionary successfully spread the confusion to phantastic.
Ulundi went to work on TOA after whipping court.
Luckily I chose to build settler in phantasic and whipped for two pop. He went on to found yodhaspura (aka yoda) which now has access to fish/rice/cows/iron. Decided to promote growth with a granary as first build.
Nobama whipped a court and sent a :crazyeye: missionary towards yoda. I sunk a turns worth of hammers into another missionary before realizing i didn't need another one so switched to lib.
Built at least one cottage in Nobama and two in phantastic. The phantastic one just completed.
Our power graph is falling off against jao. He is also sniffing around with a chariot and archer so should keep an eye on him.

Note to next player: maybe should switch the worked plain hill to the new cottage in phantastic. Will reach happy cap quicker and once whip weariness burns off can whip the court.
Don't forget the partially built missionary in Nobama if and when we get another city built.

edit: BTW Jao is way behind in culture so its unlikely he is doing us a favor by building us wonders.

Looking over the situation we're looking OK. Could use more workers though.

We spread confusedness to Yoda and now have all our cities confused , would like to send Joao a missionary to get him friendly.

Joao is researching Alpabet (in 9) which could be huge for us.

Get this event. I didn't spend any money trying for the extra 100 beakers as in my experience they never work.

Aesthetics comes in and I chose Literature, for the epics and Great Library.

civ4screenshot0001og9.jpg

At the end of 10 we research Literature, research set on Metal Casing (but no beakers), we lose Temple of Artemis in Ulundi with 1 turn left , I put it on temple to let it grow (at happy limit), then Shwedagon Paya maybe.

We can deal with Joao now but not sure we need to (maybe HR will help us out).

When our axe heal down south we might want to look at taking the barb city (one archer left).

Choko Central should look at Great Library next I think and Nobamba crank out a settler for the north west (marble copper cows).

We need 3 monuments to be able to build statue of zeus as well.

I think take the Monarchy/Agriculture trade and revolt to Hereditary Rule.

I have a missionary on auto pilot to joao as well.

We have explored his lands and it looks like we're alone (he has tonnes of cities). Our iron is being hooked up as well. We will have to deal with him at some stage but not for a while hopefully.

Where do we want the Epics? National in Choko Central and Heroic in best hammer non wonder-producing city maybe. Probably best to leave them until we get marble on-line (in north west).

Good round ozbenno. Definately need some wonder boosting resources to avoid being beaten so the north west city sooner then later and then the epics sounds good. I have played a few big and small map situations. iirc it is rare to not to be able to make contact with the other civs. It does look like Jao hasn't met anyone else yet but either he or we will. Maybe need a galley for exploring to the east more likely up north where we can see some land above the marble city site.

Guys Im moving house in the next couple of days. I'm not sure how long its going to be until get everything sorted in new digs so I'll be off the roster until further notice.

Good luck with the move Mighty. Hope you can get soted sooner than later.
:)
