Welcome to your SGOTM 10 team thread. Please use it for all internal team communication, turn logs and discussions. Subscribe to it to receive notifications, and do not visit the other team threads for this game until you have finished. Please also subscribe to the Maintenance Thread for this game here, where teams and staff may post non-spoiler information of general interest. I hope you enjoy the game.

The starting saves will become available on the SGOTM Progress and Results page on May 7th, at midnight, server local time.

Thanks again to Gyathaar for coming up with the variant and developing the map.

You are Elizabeth of England, and your mission is simply to destroy the barbarians, who have evolved considerably in this game, having learnt a few tricks from their cousins in Civ4. They have advanced weaponry, they can build cities, and they have an uncanny capability to learn new technologies.

All victory conditions are switched on, but the winning team will be the one that achieves the destruction of the barbarian nation earliest.

Here's the start.

SGOTM10-start.jpg

Map Parameters
Playable Civ - England
Opponents - Six: Mayans, Byzantines, Dutch, Inca, Sumerians, Barbarians.
World size - Standard
Difficulty - Emperor
Landform - Mystery
Barbarians - Non-standard

The map is handbuilt, and therefore may not have a standard configuration.

Game mods:
The game uses the default rules as defined in the SGOTM Reference Thread, with the following modifications:

- Galleys can never enter ocean tiles.
- There are some unusual advanced/modified Barbarian units.
- The Barbarians have research capabilities, and can build cities and wonders.

The SGOTM Mediterranean resources are included, as you can see from the starting screenshot. If you have played SGOTM 9 then you will be ready. Other players will need to download and unzip this small graphics mod pack. Details are provided in the SGOTM Reference Thread..

Please ensure that you have incuded the line: NoAIPatrol=0 in your conquests.ini text file.

Please visit the following links to ensure that you are adequately prepared, skipping references to PtW or Vanilla versions of Civ3.

Notes:

A. ONLY Conquests version 1.22 (C3C) is supported for this SGOTM. All teams will compete for a single award.

B. All teams must play the sponsored variant - the laurels will be awarded for the fastest destruction of the Barbarian Nation. The wooden spoons will go to the team with the lowest final score.

C. You MUST play from the start file assigned to your team. All saved game files uploaded to the server are parsed through software that extracts and archives data about your save, including reload count for each turn set.

Have fun :D

civ_steve checking in. Welcome lots of former/current Peanut-y players, and greetings to Bahzell :wavey: . Off we go for another adventure - this one of the enforced C3C type (but that's OK).

We're definitely in this to have fun, learn a few things, and trounce the AI of course. Suggestions, discussion, strategy are always welcome, and we try to be constructive in any disagreements. Once someone's turn is up, they have about 2 days (48 hours) to post a 'got-it' and a total of about 3 days (72 hours) to play and post their turns and results. These are general suggestions to keep play moving; if someone is consistently late in posting a 'got-it' or to play, the Whip might have to come out! :) By setting up the turn sequence of players to span the time zones in order, there's usually a minimum of time between one player posting their results and the next player posting a 'got-it'. And there's no problem if you have to skip a turn - please post this and we can either trade that player's turn with another's or arrange for a make-up a little later.

We should get our time zones straightened out to set up a good turn sequence.

civ_steve - USA West Coast (GMT-8)
I believe AVN and Mathilda were Finland (GMT+2 ?)
Randy was USA East (GMT -5)
Keith - you were also USA East (?)
and Bahzell ...

Looking at the starting position, it looks pretty good. If we move one space NE (to the plains space) we can pick up the 2nd BG. Either way we can get to +5 food or more.

Hi all!

Well done Keith for getting back into this :goodjob:
Wellcome Bahz :wavey:

Steve, I think you are being a bit over generous with the 48 hours for a got-it, it's been 24 hours up till now and I'd certainly would like to keep it that way.

GMT+2 is correct for me and AVN.
I'll make a team world clock again and put it in my sig when we know everybody's locations (town, or closest big city name preferred).

As for the game itself, my main question atm is about the barbarian nation.
My interpretation/guess of them is that they are super babrbarians, which means that they can do all the things any civ can, but ALSO pop up in any shadow at any time. What pops there? Is it a camp with a setteler in it or a town straight away?
AVN's interpretation was that they are just like any other nation with the pop up possibilty.
The difference to how this will play out is quite big.
In any case we can expect this to be a tech race, as gallies can't travel oceans, so we'll need to get to at least astronomy asap.
But if they can pop up anywhere, it might take marines to clear all one tile islands.

So @ Alan or Gyathaar - can these barbs pop up?

I'm here.

I'll post some thoughts sometime Saturday.

And I'm still in Columbus, Ohio (USA Eastern Daylight Saving Time) so +4 or +5?

Gyathaar said:
THose barbarians that pop up are like your normal barbarians.. barbarian cities cant pop up
Thanks Gyathaar and sorry to be a pain. Does that mean that this barbarian nation can't pop up at all? Not even a 2hp warrior?

Ok, from Alan's clarification in the maintanance thread I deduce that the one tile islands are a worry.
So a tech race to marines?

Checking in. I'm in Arizona, so stuck in Mountain standard time as we do not play with the clock.(Don't know what that is in GMT)

I agree with civ_steve as to moving 1 ne to grab 2nd BG and still retain all the bonus tiles.

Questions

1. What shall we Research first?
2. What attitude shall we take with the non barbarian nations when we meet them?
3. What kind of city placement are we going for? OCP, CxxxC or CxxC?

My Suggestions to my Questions

1. Need to beeline to Map Making (we need to find out what the map looks like and make contacts asap)

2. I'd have to say peaceful, unless we need more room or we think another nation is getting to big. Destruction of the Barbarians is the main objective of this game and the sooner the better.

3. I'd go OCP for the captol then CxxxC for 1st ring and CxxC from then on. This way our capitol will be a powerhouse at whatever we develop it for and our 1st ring will be productive, 2nd Ring+ will be mainly for Troop support.

Ok, can I stick you down for Phoenix?

1. I don't expect map making to matter much as

I'd go for writing anyway as we already start with writing and pottery.
Early second tier tech for trading will eb good and getting the freee tech from philo will keep us nicely up in techs. And I'd like litterature early to get libraries to help to keep research up to speed. And republic of course.

2. No need for early wars. Let's see how it goes with resources.
Lots of trading, both techs and luxes, is good :)

3. Since this is C3C, there's no need for ring city placement, so OCP seems to make most sense. I'd actually say spread out as much as possible. Just to reduce the amount of shaded areas for the nasty barbs to pop up in.

Also I'd be very careful to not have settlers going out uncovered and to have all outer cities well defended at all times.

Time for me to check-in.

And a welcome to our new team member Bahzell :)

There are two points I like to discuss atm.
1) Who will be our team-captain ? IMHO civ_steve would be the first candidate as the longest member of this team. Do you want to do that ?
(in case civ_steve doesn't want to do it, Mathilda has after him the most experience in this team, so IMHO she should be the second candidate.

2) If I understand it correctly we only need to destroy the barbarian civilization (or let it do by an AI-civ). The other (normal) barbarians are not important for achieving this victory. Is this interpretation correct ?

It's unclear if the barbarian nation can pop up units, but I guess that's not the case. The barb civ is IMO a civilization and therefore can not pop-up units, but I'm aware that surpises regarding this are possible. As I expect other surprises with the barb state.

Finally one comment for the new team members just for clarification.
Mathilda and I are living together.

Team world clock is now in my sig, in case you ever wonder what time it is where somoene else is.
It sure helps me :)
Let me know if you want any changes in it.

I agree with civ_steve as to moving 1 ne.

I'd flat out study for a Republic sling shot.

Who will be our team-captain ? IMHO civ_steve agree. Mathilda 2nd agree.

Play order?

Mathilda
civ_steve
Keith Larson
AVN
Bahzell
Randy (I played our last turn last game)

Thoughts

1-try to make a fast pace science game.
2-keep all AI alive and almost as stronge as us. (They can help kill barbs).
3-if the barbs are on their own island (as I suspect) we can gift cities we take to the AI. Then we need vary little defence. We keep cities only long enough to use as M.A.S.H. (First Aid) or Foward attack bases.
4-build a lot of strong offence units. We may need a Navy but only transports.
5-build no wonders.
6-kill barbs
7-as soon as we can reach the Barb Nation and after we are a republic. Study techs that give us the fastest strongest offence units.

I saw a few teams did this last game:

They were on line for the first turn sets and were able to talk about the first few turns in almost real time.

We could try this?

Yikes. I'm still nerveous about starting a game.
But I guess it's time. This is my sixth round as a Peanuttian.
I'd swap Keith and Bahz around in that to make it:
Math
Steve
Bahz
AVN
Keith
Randy

Thoughts
5-build no wonders.
Any thoughts about golden age?
I don't think I've ever played England, do we get it with Man O War sinking a ship?
Is that the time we want to have our GA?

Works for me.
How's you all's schedules for tomorrow?
(Tomorrow I don't plan to be up this late, as there's work again monday morning.)

Yeah, Phoenix works.

Just give me a time for Sunday and I'll be on as long as nothing unexpected happens.

As for team capt. civ_steve or Mathilda is fine with me.

After 6:00 PM my time is good, all the way to about 3:00 AM when I go to bed. Any time in that window works for me.

But as Mathilda is first she should pick the time. She's half way ahead of us around the world so we may not all be able to help.

I'm afraid that makes it from 1am to 10 am my time and as I start work at 7am, it doesn't seem like the best time to be starting a sgotm.

Anyway - still about the actual game.
We still have two interpretations of wether BBBs (big bad barbs) can pop up or not.
Any votes for either?

Or we can discuss strategy for a day or two then start the game say tues.

It warms my eccentric ol' heart to see the nutty tradition continues with what looks like quite a strong team. Good to see you back again Keith, and the rest of you veteran nutty warriors ! Bahzell - I hope you enjoy the experience.

I wish you all a very successful game, and I hope that the Peanut banner will fly proudly on the centre flagpole when the award presentation ceremony comes around.

I will emerge occasionally from the dark depths of my workload just to check that you are maintaining the finest of the Team Peanut traditions - having lots of fun playing :) !
