SGOTM 11 - klarius

I just noted another thing, I overlooked until now.
America would make peace and RoP.
Might be a good thing for killing them in one go and we could already position settlers while at peace.

Yes, that seems much the best plan, if it's possible.

It's too late for me to be up, so no photos. Anyway it is over.

850ad
63.8% of land according to Mapstat with 1621 tiles. So we need 285 more to reach 75%.

switch a number of rubbish towns to wealth and get to 542gpt from 513.

Talk to Abe: give him 5gpt, magnetism, wm, for his wm ROP and alliance v France and Vikings.

ibt
Berlin(empty) stolen by french cav. In new Umtala a cav survives a French cav attack.

860ad
kill vet muskeeteer rushed in Berlin by the French, redlining a cav.
kill the French cav in Berlin and retake the town: size 1 now.

A cav kills a spear in Oxford, the island German town in the south.
A cav dies attacking another spear in Oxford.

On a better note a cav army kills 3 vet pikes in Oslo and takes the town.

Upgrade 4 horses and spend the rest rushing settlers in England.

ibt
York (empty fortunately) flips to France.
lose a cav in berlin to French attack.

870
retake York (reg muskeeteer)
kill French cav out of Berlin.

It takes 3 cav to kill a French Musket that had landed near Kyoto.
Kill a German longbow outside Oxford with the remaining cav there.

Bergen:
knight army kills vet pike.
knight army kills reg musket.
knight army kills reg musket and takes the town.

reposition to attack America next turn.
Still only 65%.

ibt
lose a cav to a French cav.
A galleon survives an attack from the vikings.

880
attack America
Philidelphia:
elite cav retreats from spear.
vet cav killed by spear: I will never win at this rate.
elite cav kills spear.
elite cav kills other spear and takes the town.

Atlanta
elite cav kills spear.
elite cav retreats from spear which is undamaged.
elite cav redlines killing spear.
elite cav kills last spear and we take Magellens.

Seattle
cav army kills 3 spear and takes city.

Boston
2 cav kill 2 spear and take town.

Miami
4 cav kill 3 spear and a longbow to take the town and an industrial worker.

Washington
cav army kills 3 spear.
cav kill a fouth spear but there are still more.

Aarhus
cav army kills pike and musket to take town.

Stockholm
army kills a pike.
cav kills a pike and takes it.

ibt
oslo (empty) deposed to viking

890
retake Oslo with cav v one spear.

Washington
elite cav kills crusader
elite cav kills spear.
elite cav kills spear and takes it.

Chicago
cav army kills 2 spear and takes it.

Copenhagen
cav retrats from pike
2 cav kill 2 pike and take town.

Reyjavik
cav kill vet musket.
cav kill pike and takes it.

Birka cav retreats from pike.

game crashes.
reload

I can't quite get to 75%
Attack Avigvon
army kills a musket.
cav kills another musket but the town is still defended.

2 more armies reach trondheim and kill a defender each to take the city.

Kill a pike in Birka.
transport a settler and cav by ship chain from Amitulu to Scandinavia, and take Birka.
The vikings are off the main continent now.

On 74.4%: frustrating. I make that 17 tiles short.
The reinforcements on the German island have just landed but can't attack til next turn.

found a city next to Hastings to reach 1903 tiles: that is 75.0% in mapstat but just 74% in the victory screen.
Check civ assist2: 1 tile from domination!

find one more tile I can claim with a settler, but although civ assist now allows me the dom limit, the victory screen stays at 74%.

one more settler in hastings has movement and can just reach a tile this turn to grab a few more tile: 75% at last.
Let's just hope there isn't a culture flip or a captured town.
abandon Warwick to found new Umtata2 gets another 3 tiles: 6 over limit now.

kill berserk outside Stockholm with wounded cav.

wait and hope.

ibt
no flips, no lost towns.
Domination win.
That is the first time I finished a sgotm. It is in fact the first game of civ I've finished all year.

I haven't started looking at where we stand relative to the other teams, but in any case, an excellent finish. That was a lot of work to do in four turns.

Now everyone looking at the forum will now we both finished...hehe...

Good job!

Nice job Offa. That was quicker than I expected.

Skimming the other teams threads reminded me of sgotm8 in which I watched another team beat our time (albeit using a tactic that we had felt beneath us :twitch: so far beneath us in fact that we never thought of it), a less comfortable memory for me I guess than for the rest of this team.

Anyway, whether or not Shaka beats our finish, they have certainly whalloped us on the post count. On another front, Wotan seems even more splenetic than K.

Indeed. This is worth quoting here:

I just had to open the save. This is utter chaos. How could you possibly make such a mess of the game in just 10 turns? How can Z. be at size 3 about to grow to size 4 with citizens working tiles for 11 spt with 1 food left to produce? Where is the 5 fpt plan we should follow. Food is the most important factor in Civ, yet you totally ignore this simple fact and run it at 3 fpt??? Was that so difficult to follow? Being in GA disrupts the settler factory, that I know but it should absolutely not affect the food production so that part is totally your doing. It has 25 shields produced with 5 left on the Settler. You have managed to totally disrupt the Settler factory and my enthusiasm for this game. It is a team game, if you can't play the game to the ability required don't join a SGOTM, please! You managed to disrupt a simple plan last turnset too costing us a warrior to save the situation, this time it is absolutely amazing how you have managed to mismanage the builds. I thought it was impossible to not understand how to run the production, but I underestimated you, you have the capacity to destroy a perfectly good game.

Oh, me? I'm just an old softy at heart... ;)

Seriously, we tried to make this new player understand the mechanics of Civ. But the response was nonexistant so finally I snapped. I am a bit surprised someone would join a competitive game like SGOTM without at least a working understaning of Civ3.

BTW, great game guys! I am sure we would not have been able to beat that finishdate even if the unmentioned was not on our team...

Thank you. We won't win, though. No Republic slingshot, bad ToA location, and our unusually ragged early play proved too much to overcome.

As usual, it's a pleasure to read your spoilers.
