SGOTM 11 - One Short Straw

Agree. DS!

One thing: I think the settler may as well start on the PH in this kind of scenario. A few people invariably convince themselves not to make the obvious move, fearing they'll get screwed by the mapmakers.

I think the inherent uncertainty of the variant is what's always gonna be unfair to culture attempts. Also, it seems pretty obvious now that diplo's faster, if there was any doubt initially.

I think we kept the option open for culture but interest in it faded pretty quickly in our game. The super fast culture attempts posted in the HOF require early war declarations to pick up an extra AI capital or two so it was unlikely that a team would be able to repeat that here, especially with the war declaration limitation. If we were allowed to eliminate AI's and war as much as we wanted, I can see an early culture victory being possible here with Delhi, double fish/cow (artist farm), and Aksum (via early war declaration). Although I'm not convinced that you can break the 1000 AD wall given how tough that is for vanilla culture attempts with no constraints.

And I definitely agree on about the very well designed map by DS! :goodjob:

But if you knew the trade-off was grassland copper for 1 turn lost at start + silver + a 2 hammer city center, which would you take? I don't think the answer to that question is so easy as copper is a great production tile.

Still the silver, but without 2 pages of discussion :). Production is rarely the limiting factor, especially with double corn and that many forests around to speed it up.

I think it is pretty easy. We did know it was copper, and chose without knowing we'd get silver. +1hpt > copper, because it speeds up the 2-corn start. The important thing is silver, though - blasts through all early techs.

About the map, one thing I think is regrettable is the opening settlement.

My point is that the exploration of Turn 0 doesn't NECESSARILY lead us to the conclusion that the PH is a better place than SIP. However, it turns out that settling on the PH is MUCH superior to SIP. I think it would be quite unfair to the team settling in place.

I saw that. I love the report with the big red arrows.

Edit:

Yeah, they popped the GE. BD seems to me to be in the better position ATM.

Clearly worried about the threat our team posed.:lol:

I am sure Alanh will take any necessary action here. If all other teams get banned PR could yet win this. hehe.

@Mutineer,

Yeah, the last 3-4 turnsets were pretty straightforward. We just tried to shave a turn or two off with some MM.

Edit: We've started another game in the regular SG forum in the meantime.

Anyone given ideas for next SGOTM? I would like to see some Roman challenge. Be it a military conquest or something else. Perhaps a challenge limiting us to settling only one city. Afterall the great Roman empire mainly focused on Rome.

I am sure some other conditions could be added. needs to be a challenge too.

Am i right in thinking only 1 team is still playing now?

Well there is no SGOTM12 ideas post. Perhaps suggest it to AlanH?

I am glad i did find the right thread. One thing that does seem to be a pattern is us starting with one Ai on an island. I think the map creators fear us just dominating a map.

I once tried a imperialist game on here. Every Ai was imperialist. It actually made quite a test. In fact a lot of people claimed it was too tough. Trouble is it could be determined on luck. Which would be unfair. hmmm

Looks like there will be an SGOTM12! If you're interested in remaining on OSS, please post or PM me. to what looks like another fun game. And we can't lose a city to barbs like in SGOTM 10
