SGOTM 11 - Team Newbie

I'll continue playing now. Maybe I'll kill two civs in one turn (or two)...

 America and England right? ;)

continued at 470 AD

Make embassies with Germans and Egyptians. No one on Beta knows Korea and we want to DOW Egypt, so no chance for some free money.

480 AD (3) :

England declared war on Vikings.
Forget what I wrote about the free money. Someone has researched PP and has traded it around, so the Germans have contact to Korea!
But we have no tech to sell and can't sell them luxuries, so really no chance...
Damn, our rep is broken! I can't buy a tech for gpt. They say we have broken a deal with Korea. Damn, that ruins our strategy.
Now we only have fake peace treaties to buy our techs. Not that we need PP now.

Capture Pusan but Korea hasn't gone. Sign peace. Luckily we don't have to win via Conquest but Domination, so we don't need to care about their Settler somewhere.

DOW on Egypt and take Hierancopolis losing ine Knight to a Spear (another one retreats).
Capture all 5 Arabian towns but...although I never have seen an Arabian boat, they have some Settler around, bah, we could lose a twon to an Ansar that is running around.

Upgrade some horses, MM and rush some horses.

490 AD (4):

The Ansar captures Beijing with TGWall. recapture Beijing losing an AC first.

Kill off some units...MM and rush horses.

500 AD (5) :

Mecca deposes with 3 units in it(the flip risk was not THAT high...). Recapture it.

Move armies out of cities. CAII shows a big range for flip risk, but it is probably at the lower end as CAII doesn't know that Arabia has no capital.
We are already seeing some War Weariness.

510 AD (6) :

England declared war on the French and Germany on English.

Founded Zinguin to close a gap between Arabian lands.
We can take the Russian iron city ( I hope they only have one) next turn.
There are workers at the isthmus which can help roading to our conquered towns.
I have spend most of our money on upgrades, Banking has been researched, our allies on Beta have it. We can take the Egyptian horseoffline next turn. But they have some muskets, so they are not that easy to kill, Ottomans seem like a weaker target (with Leo's).
The cities are MMed, I don't like the governor.

I'll stop here for today. Bucephalus, if you wanna play today, go ahead, otherwise I'll play some more turns tomorrow.

Thebes and Berlin at 470AD.

The territory graph looks nice with those 6 captured and 1 founded towns...

"I have spend most of our money on upgrades"

Nicely done - & and @PaperBeetle - told you so!

With regards to Korea - that is who I declared war on when I false ROP raped India and China BUT......

The only deal we had with them was peace* and there is supposedly no peace rep!

* I know this because I always declare war via the reneogiate deals screen just in case I break a deal by accident.

Hmm...strange, did we sell them ressources at some point where the connection got lost?

I suspect that dow breaking the 20 turn peace deal was the culprit. The point about there being no such thing as a peace rep (if it is true, which I'm not convinced about) is not that 20-turn peace doesn't count as a per-turn deal, but that you can keep doing phoney peace deals and the AI keeps falling for it. i.e. We broke that peace with Korea, but if we try to get peace with them now, they will still consider it, and give hard goods (if they had any) for it.
The fact that the peace deal is a 20-turner is a seperate issue.

But anyway, war was needed, and we couldn't just hang around waiting for these peace deals to expire. As for tech, we are only really interested in two more - Metallurgy and Mil Trad. If getting hold of them becomes a problem, we can research them ourselves . We've got plenty of land for science farming.
What matters most to me is whether we still have our ROP rep. Without that we have a hard fight on Beta ahead of us.

ROP rep is (should be) intact, I had no problems signing ROPs with Arabia and Ottomans and I had no unist inside Egyptian territory when declaring on them.

We can still buy chump change for gpt; the damage to our rep has just made everything so expensive (Ragnar would sell 19g for 6gpt) that tech purchases are made difficult. Difficult, but not out of the question: 131gpt would get Printing from Ragnar. Banking is more expensive. They need to see the gpt to agree to these deals though. We can temporarily get up to about 300gpt just by setting everyone in the provinces to tax.

Oh I forgot to mention this before the start of the turnset, but... we are running 10% lux that we don't need!

If we are going to take Leonardo soon, we should start saving cash until we get it. We could raise additional funds by allying with Bismark against the Anglophone bloc. He would pay us 28gpt. It might not last long, but unless we are going to need peace with those guys soon, there seems no reason not to go for it. Ragnar would stump up 5gpt too, and we could leave Joan out of the deals in case we changed our minds, and wanted to trigger war with the Europeans.

What are we? Damn, I am playing almost half an hour per turn and didn't see that! Might give us some score points... (I know we are not playing a GOTM...)

@ socralynnek: Looks like a nicely played turnset so far.

Should we post a spoiler? If so who wants to write it, and how much of our strategy should we give away?

Oh and btw, PaperBeetle thinks we don't yet have enough of the map to be in the spoiler thread.

There are islands north of the Vikings where we don't have full coastal knowledge, so we have to wait until we can read it.
We shouldn't post our spoiler too early, other teams might copy our strategy then...but I'd like to see a spoiler.
We could do a team effort for that.

Team effort: That reminds me of something....ah yes, I'll play a few more turns now.

continued

520 AD (7) - Take Yaroslavl.
Galley sees an Arabian galley..:::!!!...hope we are faster.BTW the Arabs are in Anarchy now...probably their Settler is unhappy...
Take Egyptian horse offline.
Capture Edrine.

Edrine and Yaroslavl have a much too high flip risk, I'll give them up next turn. Set lux to 0%.
Sell some useless harbors (if a corrupt city can get to size 4 using +2fpt-tiles without it then a harbor just costs us money.

530 AD (8) - The arab galley moves directly next to us....tadaddadaadadaadaa the Arabs are gone!
Kill off some units, rush some...otherwise quiet turn.

540 AD (9) - No flips. Found Bapedi.

550 AD(10) - No flips. only move a few units and found Hlobane. Cities aren't MMed yet.
The army near Thebes is on pillaging mission, please continue that, especially disconnect saltpeter and the capital.
Keep flip risk for Ottoman towns and Russian towns in mind.
If we have more settlers we could just raze towns without wonders but atm I think it's better to flip/recapture them to get their population down.

Here is a pic of our continent. Bucephalus, good luck!
