SGOTM 11 - Who Dat?

First off, congrats on the victory! I haven't had a chance to read through your thread fully but it looks like you lost a lot of time between finishing MM and winning the diplo vote, which is unfortunate. OSS planned on winning the UN vote on the first go-around and we shifted our diplo plans accordingly (i.e., making sure we had a good UN opponent).

OSS in SGOTM9 was a good example that lots of deity players did not make a good team. Team work skill is a more important factor than personal skill in SG.

Having been part of OSS SGOTM 9, I definitely agree with this  SGOTM 9 was ... rough. Team work is an important element of a successful SGOTM team.

While I agree, a lot of it is circular. There's also the old saying 'Too much is like too little' :p

I was thinking it would be all spam at the furious rate their were posting early on but it contains some very detailed posts/arguments like you say.

I would agree. If you have the experience to squash bad ideas and keep the convo on track you fare much better.

I am suprised 2 teams actually went for culture. We did consider this before liberalism but I thought we would be playing till 1750ad. Cottages early on would of crippled Delhi at start. Although with wonders it could of produce a huge amount of culture.

I think PD looked at a 1300ad culture date. Still left the problem of how do you get all the resources and where are they?

Seriously need to plan our starts much better and keep our long term goals on track.

Be fun to see if we get the wooden spoon or not.

Updated 10-Aug-2010.

I may be off by a turn or two depending on when victory was triggered. Asterisk/italics indicate teams' predictions for their finish date (except Fifth Element, which was predicted by kcd_swede)

Plastic Ducks: 930AD diplo (T238)
OSS: 1030AD diplo (T248)
*Barley Demons: 1160AD (t261)
Xteam: 1190AD diplo (T264)
Gypsy Kings: 1285AD (T277)
Fifth Element: 1315AD diplo (T283)
Unusual Suspects: 1320AD diplo (T284)
*ChokoMisfits: 1400AD/T300 diplo
Who Dat?: 1485AD diplo (T317)
Phoenix Rising: 1690AD diplo (T358)
*T'dr...: 1600AD culture (T340)
*Maple Sporks: 1690AD culture (T358)
Smurkz: retired

Looks like a close race for the bronze medal. Man, as a Who Dat? player, writing up that list really depressed me :(

Some notes:

Xteam: UN built on T254, and gifted to Toku. Finished with Communism as last tech. finished on T264 (1190AD), looking strong. Interesting technique of gaining diplo points with Free Religion rather than shared religion. Considering the religious setup in their came, perhaps not surprising!

ChokoMisfits: T290 now and about to complete the UN. Waiting 10 turns for the vote (did they include the SecGen vote as well?). Still some loose ends with spreading Hinduism and getting resources hooked up, but no problems expected. If it's 10 turns then ETA is T300/1400AD.

Fifth Element: Man, these guys discuss a lot ;). They're attacking Mehmed for silk and teching Mass Media at the moment. It's T269 right now (1240AD) and they just liberalized Radio. kcd_swede predicted T283 victory in the Unusual Suspects thread.

Maple Sporks: One of the culture victory teams, M.S. is engaged in a Rifling/Cannon war with Mehmed and Isabella to capture Silk. They just settled the small island between Zara and Isabella (it must have had a previous city that was razed). Victory estimate is 30 turns (1690AD)

T'dr...: Religion spread is in hand and culture win is predicted in 30 turns (T340, 1600AD). Do they have all their GP already? Both T'dr and Maple Sporks are eyeing each others' culture graphs :D

Gypsy Kings: Mass Media came in around T266 (1210AD), victory in 1258AD (T277)

Barley Demons: UN completed in 980AD (T243), and they just captured DevilsGate. They're about to settle a city on/next to furs and presumably have a missionary ready. Predicted victory 1160AD (T261) - looking strong!

Smurkz: Xcalibrator played a turnset with the interesting leadin "You rule! We're doomed". It's 1300AD (T280) and they are having difficulty gathering the required votes. Their friends are Sal, Mehmed, and Izzy and they want to add Zara. UN is due in 7 turns (T287). They threw in the towel (despite still having the chance to crush Who Dat's finish time :D )

Unusual Suspects: Win in 1320AD (T284)

Thanks! Just noticed the game summary that BBP did on OSS's page one - it's really good.

We managed the diplo situation well. The problem was building UN in a captured city, and getting silk and dye from Mehmed by war. Avoiding the war probably would have saved us many turns, and not cost that many diplo points with our friends. Maybe I can talk pnp_dredd into replaying the last 50 turns ;)

Be fun to see if we get the wooden spoon or not.

Gumbolt, looks like Smurkz will snatch the non-maple non-spork away from Phoenix ...

Nah: I'm replaying the game, going for culture to see what I can do. That's more my thing rather than replaying a diplo endgame.

The level of play that some people posses is simply astounding. They are making decisions on options that us mortals don't even realise exist.

We've got a good solid team, however I think we're all a bit too similar to be really effective - we're all immortalish players, none of us are diety legends, micro fiends or hardcore gameplay-mechanics delvers to the extent that other players are.

But I definately have fun playing these games - the lively discussions make this thread the first thing that I check on the internet each day. The social aspect is a great addition to a classic game!

Well given we went for diplomatic win we should really of been way ahead of 1690ad. Too many error and a game glitch that cost us the GE. We also didnt settle the plains hill at start which really did hammer our start. We lost out on the silver and early production was much weaker.

Looking back settling the plain hill was optimum start. Of course you needed to find the silver too. Silver and 2 corn was such a powerful food and teching start. With a few fast workers you can chop out 2-3 cities in no time. ;)

I think it is just as important to have a team that gel as well as high level players. You could have a team of 5 deity players. If all they do is argue then the team will die a sorry death. I think this didn't help a certain team last SGOTM. No doubt I will obliterate this post later. :)

I doubt Smurkz will get wooden spoon. To quote Alanh from SGOTM 10 results .

'You have to finish - win or lose - to qualify for the spoons. Neither team finished. '

So there is honour in finishing at least for us. :)

Hey folks, SGOTM12 signup thread is open. It's an interesting one ...

By the way, should we add a few more players? It got a bit thin around the middle when a few of us were on holiday, and at the end with 4 to 5 players left. I think we could do with 2 or3 more players to make up the numbers, and some extra voices might bring in some new ideas ...

I was quite disappointed at the lack of activity this time around, which admittedly made me lose some interest. Our overly rushed endgame (with time to spare) reflects this. So I'll say we need new blood/a merger to continue. I'll sign up tentatively for now, but I will hope to have a more active team this time around. But still, a team built around the Who Dat? core is preferable.

I was just poking around and saw this post. As a member of Fifth Element, I resemble this remark! :p

FYI, the reason we had so many posts is that a couple of people on the team were seriously into MM and willing to optimize plans with a test game in order to squeeze every hammer, coin and food out of our empire. The rest of the team prefered to shoot from the hip and let things happen with a focus on the macro only. It led to a LOT of discussion regarding how much information was required in a Pre-Play Plan and how much testing the up player should perform. Many feathers were ruffled... :mischief:

Cheers for the PMs guys. My lappy is having brain surgery at the moment to get more memory as a stop gap before a new machine... So I haven't been on this website much...typing on my phone at the moment. I do love a bit of gadge. SGOTM 12 looks cool, and has come round faster than I was expecting.

Hey guys, haven't heard any objections, so I'm assuming we are going ahead with a merger with the storied Fifth Element team ... I still like 'Fifth Element - Who Dat' as a team name but I recognize it's a bit clunky ;)

P.S. Orb, what kind of phone did you get? I need to replace my crappy Windows 6.1 Samsung i780, and I was thinking of an Android phone ... need a physical keyboard though ...
