SGOTM 12 - Regular

Is it really me again?

Looks so.

Yes, I think I can play today or tomorrow.
I take a look into the save right now and maybe I am coming back with questions...

OK, so is the plan for the next turnset the following?

-Keep researching at full speed ( I think I stop before finishing research on Refining anyway)

-Try to get Hospitals into each city that can use them maybe by using Civ.Eng.

-Release Korea from its misery and take the last city

-Start shipping units to weak non-sci civs (England and Carthage first?)

-Don't build any wonder (Hoover and US might be a nice prebuild if we can't get the Palace cost up fast enough)

-Build some units but MM the cities who have all needed improvements for science.

Sorry, but by now I am in well over my head, having never really played industrial and never ever played Deity, so every turnset takes hours, because I am afraid of the mistakes. and I just don't have the time for that right now.

Haha, I know how you feel; each of my turns takes hours, never mind the turnsets. :) Well actually the turns get shorter throughout the turnset, as I work the micro back the way I like it... but anyway, if you want to grab a couple of turns any time, just let us know.

All sounds good to me. I am quite sure the English should be fragile. If we can attack them from Sumerian territory it might allow us to move faster in that war. Carthage is a tougher prospect as long as they have MPP with France. I would look towards Zululand first, and how about the Celts?

No need to build any wonders. France will get Suffrage in Orleans. Delhi could eventually build Hoover, but to no advantage. And I don't think Delhi can make 1000 shields fast enough to do UN for us.

But there is a problem. Kyoto has been irrigated up. Where are we going to build UN? We could just do it in Constan with a MASH prebuild. That's 500 shields. We would get UN 2 (if lucky) or 3 (pollution) turns after Fission and some careful micro.

Edit: a bit of double-counting there: using a MASH prebuild would let Constan do UN 3 or 4 turns after Fission.

Well it doesn't take to many worker turns to mine kyoto, and there is not much to be done there. But when I looked through the save I thought Cuzco would be a good place to build a wonder too.

Yes, you're quite right, fully improved for shields, Kyoto should be able to do UN in 15 or 16 turns. We have at least 28 turns of research left in the game, so we still have time to get it put back that way. In the meantime we can let it grow to pop 22 (i.e. whatever pop it will be able to support when fully mined). I suggest we get the power plant started there now though. Better to get these things done early than to find we don't quite have enough time later on.

I haven't really checked Cuzco out. It has plenty of shields I know, but also corruption. The big question is can it make 1000 shields in the next 30 turns? I want to use Kyoto because it already has a factory. We shouldn't build factories anywhere else (except Constan perhaps; maybe we would rather build infantry than knights?), because they won't pay back their shield investment in time.

Will Kyoto do 100 shields? wow.

Cuzco is currently running 30 shields at 30% corruption rate, so 21 uncorrupted shields. I don't know about timing, but it can still build factory, plant and ironworks. Finishing the hospital first would add another 7 or 8 base shields, but probably the same can be obtained by stopping growth and just mining one or two of the planes.

I'll start playing now, I guess I try to raise shield output in Cuzco after Hospital, it's no big loss trying there even if we decide to take Kyoto.

980 AD - Ship another army towards Korea.

MM...use some CE...

1000 AD - Arbai and France signed an alliance vs America.
Arabia and France sign an alliance vs Persians, so France declares...hopefully they won't take out another sci civ...

1010 AD - Carthage and Babylon are sending units to Korea...
We lose our supply of Furs.
Sell Greece Electricity for Furs.

Capture Seoul and release the Koreans from their misery...

1020 AD - Xerxes offers ROP. I agree, maybe that will lighten up his mood...
We lose our supply of Silks.

To next player (probably PB?):

-Should we rebuy Silks from Scandinavia?
-Should we send Workers to the Persian city and block the French this way from attacking them? I think we shoould do so, otehrwise it would have been of no use to save them.
-The armies in Pyongyang should heal and them move towards England (London still has only 2 spears in it)
-The other army is in a Galleon. We can decide whom we should attack in the South.
-I haven't MMed this turn.

I would go with the silk deal. We have a very thin military, so we probably won't ever have the opportunity to attack the Vikings - there will always be easier targets for picking off.
Blockading Persia sounds like a good plan, but our workers are precious; they can become citizens and generate beakers. So I would look for another unit to fill this role. Perhaps somewhere like Cuzco can quickly produce a gang of explorers.
I finally get to prosecute my long-awaited English campaign? :woohoo: Ah, I bet we'll get distracted by some idiot civ dowing us in Mongolia or something...

I will try to play tonight, taking us at least as far as Refining.

Well I don't think you will manage to make a full campaign out of it. but some nice little fast conquest may be in the books.

em, it is a pity. if I wipe Korea in my turnset or I prepare enough units we will get two citys from Korea. now the city belong to France.

Wasn't that the turnset where I left you with an attack 3 army and a couple of stray units to take out the rest of Korea? And you could have had two extra knights if I had taken them to war, and left the conscripts doing what they do best; sitting in town minding their own business. No, we surely couldn't have beaten France to the third Korean town with our current weedy military. We are rated average to France.

Anyway, I have got the save and am playing now. Sorry for the delay, I just got Tomb Raider Anniversary... reliving some fond memories. :)

Okay, I have gone up to 1100 ad

And my full turn log:
Spoiler 1020ad to 1100ad :

1020 ad

Give Ragnar Medicine for silks + 6g + w map.

Mine a grass at Kyoto. It isn't quite as strong a town as I thought; the UN schedule is going to be tight. Run 5 Engineers in there to get the coal plant hurried up.
Use engineers to get Osaka's hospital in 1 turn.
Switch Teo to courthouse; it can make up 2 extra beakers this way!
Switch Tarsus to market; no point building a hospital if we can't keep pop working.
Switch Hattusas to court; no point building stuff that won't be ready before we win.
Draft in Amsterdam, which will fill its food box before hospital is ready.
Irrigate at Memphis to allow 2-turn growth.
Switch Thebes to artillery and irrigate there; factory won't pay off in time.
Switch Persep to infantry; again, completing the factory will generate less usable shields for us by the time we win, and they will have come later.
Irrigate at Rome; one turn worker pump 6>7!
Draft, disband, whip in Bombay.
Finish irrigating Delhi and bring it to size 23.
Bring Copan to pop 11. Growth to 12 and hospital build both come next turn.

Try to get the ship chain back into shape.

Use the whip in Amsterdam and Memphis.
Disband a conscript in Pasar for hospital in 1 turn.
Finish mining Kyoto for a pitiful total of 50spt. Put 2 cops in there for -1fpt, 54spt. That will get UN in 19 or 20 turns, which should be fine with our research rate.

I can see 7 Celtic land tiles; they contain 18 early medieval units.

Colony a dye between the two English towns, to get a road down faster.

Bring Amsterdam and Lisbon to size 16.

Summary to follow.

Research
We got Refining in 4 turns, for a total of 8 turns for the tech; that's a turn later than the schedule. Combustion has 2 turns left to go, which is the planned duration for that tech.

Kills
France killed the Persians. I was a turn too late getting a blockade down there, and then there was also a Persian unit blocking the road. I even gifted X-man up to Atomic in the hope he would buy peace, but no luck. There's no helping some people is there?
We killed the English. The were seven battles (a couple were just leader fishing), all of which we won. I took an army over there which didn't even see any action.

Zulus
Having finished with the English, most of our spare military is heading down to the Zulu island. There is a landing area on the east coast which is not in their territory, so we can gather our forces there before moving out. The saltpeter mountain looks like an excellent first step in the attack; the arts can bombard Zimbabwe and then the fast movers can run straight over and take the town.
We can also bring our armies up to size 4 now; by the time we have finished with the Zulus, we will have access to transports.

Other Targets
Capturing all four Zulu towns will bring the palace prebuild up to 900 shields. We would then need a further three towns to get it up to 1000 shields. I can't see three easily reachable towns unless we are prepared to go to war with France.
The Celtic island is a short trip from Mongolia, but it looks like they have a lot of units over there; a galleon/explorer combo is over there. Brennus has asked us to leave, so the galleon should head out this turn. Maybe drop the explorer off for a more detailed look around?
Most of our military will be on the Zulu island though, so from there the nearest targets would be the Iroquois to the east or the Americans to the northwest.

The UN
Kyoto is busy with the prebuild, and has made better progress than expected - very little pollution there so far. It has 320 shields in the box, and is running at 54spt with two cops and -1fpt. So we can afford to (indeed we need to) ease up on this place a bit. We expect to reach the modern era in 16 to 18 turns. Assuming we can get the palace prebuild up to 900 shields, we want to aim for about 890 shields in the box after 15 more turns. That works out to a mere 38spt. Four irrigations and switching the cops to scientists should get us down to that level. But we need to be ready to get the shields back up to ~60spt ready for the interturn in which we go modern.

Workers
Keep the workers flowing people! Pasar is still running as a 1 turn pump, although I let the hopital finish there. Rome is also doing 1 turn workers, and Oporto is still doing 2-turners. Remember the point of these workers is not to improve the land (although there is still some work to be done; some irrigation is still needed, and our newly captured towns could use some attention) but to join into towns which are growing beyond size 12.

Colosseums Rule
Just kidding. :) There are several colosseum builds going on. They are all prebuilds for docks. I think we get docks for 80 shields, being SEA, in which case the prebuilds are mostly planned to come in at the same time as Mass Prod. I am assuming we can do that tech in 5 turns as scheduled.

I think the Iroqouis are a good target after the Zulu. Our ships are pretty fast and they don't have Rifles, not even Knights or Muskets.

And from there we can go after China and Carthage (depending on MPP).
It's at least worth a try.

France has researched Music Theory. What a waste... I guess they won't research something really helpful for us (we could buy it on the Mod. Age interturn from them to trade it but else...)

Who's next? Kulko? archphoenix?

I can play tomorrow, Kulko if you like to please pick it.
if not I will pick tomorrow and follow these:
keep tech pace.
get 7 citys in 16 turns to get 1000s palace.
ensure kyoto building.
ensure worker pop and add to other citys.
don't forgot switch Colosseums to docks.
