SGOTM 13 - klarius

Don't worry about it. I hope you've got a working video card, anyway.

As nobody seems to want it.
I got it.

Will play a few turns and report.
Yes, we are far ahead, but stalling the game w/o even any discussion going on is never good.

Played. The save.

Summary. Well I don't know if we will ever finish this game. Inter turns are very long. If I'm not bored and sick at home as today, I would need several days for just a few turns.

We have sanitation and could trade for industrialism and fascism (we don't need that, but could be a nice gift :crazyeye:).

Captured Lagos, Oporto and Lisbon.

Diplomatic situation is not as complex anymore, but still trickier than some people might like.

Turn log:
Turn 0:
Rush all the temples on Iberian island. It's a big waste not using all the nice seafood.
Nagasaki doesn't need an aqueduct.
We will have hospitals in Nara and Iron Tip, then there will be just a few tiles left.
Change to frigate and rush. Privateers seem to be bugged (not adapted to differential naval movement).

Diplomacy:
Don't want to risk any more alliances against us with important civs.
France gets 117gpt for an alliance against Vikings and dutch.
That frees up an ivory, which I get for 26gpt.
Ottomans get 75gpt for an alliance against Vikings, trying to secure our big gpt trade.
Build embassy with Hittites. They are doing Ok with saltpeter in the capital and 4 muskets.
I make an alliance against Dutch, Vikings, Aztecs, Maya, Inca, English, Arabs, Zulu for free.
I hoped we could maybe now trade something from him, but no.

Byzantines against Vikings, Dutch and Spanish for 3gpt.
Sell them wines for 7gpt.

Peace with Rome for 2gpt. Embassy (pikes in the capital), alliance versus Dutch, Vikings and Spain for 25gpt. 15 gpt back for world map.

Peace with America for 3gpt. Embassy (muskets), alliance versus Dutch,Vikings, Spain and Iroquois for 116gpt.
Sell banking and chemistry for 151 gpt.

Finally peace with Germany. But as the MA is still far, I couple it with alliances (Vikings, Arabs, English, Zulu, Dutch). He gets a few techs in the process, but is still far away from IA.

A little bit map trading and that's it ;)

IBT:
Takes forever.
A few peaces. A few alliances. But nothing of big concern.
Ottomans sign still another trade embargo against us (zulu).

Turn 1:
Ferry army over to Iberia. A bit rushing.
Map trading. Buy cash from France, Ottomans and Babylon.
Workers and that's it.

IBT:
A bit peace and war as usual. Spain finally lands a reg knight.

Turn 2:
Kill Spanish knight.
Rush a little.
Make Portuguese furious, a lot alliances and boot order. They declare.
Kill first batch of Portuguese troops with army.
Celts had made peace with Vikings. Get alliance against Vikings, Dutch, Spain and Portugal for 202gpt.
Get 197 gpt back for steam.
Rome gets 67gpt for Portugal and Iroquois. 54gpt back for banking.

IBT:
Takes more than 20 minutes :(.
Byzantines declare on behalf of Russia.

Turn 3:
Not really much to do. Some small trades.
Build a city on the original island (we are gambling all the time with the FP build) and have now corruption problems.
Kill the last Portuguese pike, so the way is free for a city on north tip of Iberia.

Save game and restart conquests with NoAIPatrol=1, in the hope IBT gets faster.

IBT:
Only ;) about 10 minutes.

A bit peace and some trade embargoes, but nothing serious.

Turn 4:
Settle the Iberian northern tip city.
A bit MM, a bit movement.
Small trades.
Renegotiate the alliance with Ottomans against Dutch.

IBT:
England lands a spear and a longbow next to New World.

Turn 5:
Rush a bit. Move a bit. Trade a bit.
Kill invasion easily.

IBT:
The usual fare of war, peace and trade embargos.
FP completes.

Turn 6:
The usual.
Make peace with Russia. Then ally them again on Vikings and Dutch.

IBT:
A few Portuguese boats amble around.

Turn 7:
Russia, France and Ottomans have fascism now, but nothing else. All three are in anarchy.
The usual small trades. And peace with Carthage. Really them against our archenemies and Spain (costs 9gpt).
They then give 250gpt for nationalism.
I land army and 4 cavs on Portugals homeland, next to Lagos.

IBT:
Embargos against us. Alliances against others.
A knight leaves Lagos and zooms into the dark south.

Turn 8:
Mongols and Korea now have fascism also.c
Prepairing some cities for sanitation next turn.
Lagos: Army kills two muskets and takes the city.
Have a look on Oporto. Regular pike on top.
Victory, retreat, victory and Oporto is ours. We have spices, as long as nothing flips.
Korea talks. Peace then alliance against the archenemies for some gpt.

IBT:
Some Spaniards and Iroquois show up near our home island.
Abandon Shimonoseki for a settler.
Rush hospitals in New World,Kagoshima and Nara.

Turn 9:
Industrialism is in the wild. Trade/broker until I have it and even fascism as it was cheap to get from Korea.
Also quite a bit cash and gpt. And we rwally need the cash. Iron Tip is really behind in infra and wants factory, coal plant and the rest before we think of a pre-build.

I capture Lisbon from 3 muskets and a longbow. No losses.

Ok quit here, interturns take forever, with not much to do within the turn.
Nevertheless, it's important that we get our infra up, so concentrate to not forget the rushing/short-rushing.
We are on electricty and should stay there.
Golden age not earlier than midway through to electricty, can be even delayed to the begin of sci method.
Note Iron Tip will have 60spt in GA with factory and coal plant and we will only have a 500sh pre-build. No use to start a pre-build before start of sci method research.

seems it's only three of us playing at the moment and that put me up. If Wotan can play, you can go ahead as you haven't played in a while.

Questions:
- How many cities does Portugal have left? Are we planning to take both Portugal and Spain out?
- I assume we take the most expensive techs AT/electronics with ToE.

Portugal has 4 cities left and for sure we want to take them out. But we should probably progress slowly, as there might come other enemies. We should replace Lisbon and build some more cities to take advantage of food resources.
Note our war is not for dominating land. We want to build cities with a lot of population.

Spain is a totally different ballgame. We should not even think of keeping any of their cities (ok maybe the former Portuguese). We cannot expect fast progress with our limited troops.

So my take is Portugal first. Don't progress deep into Spain. Fill ex-Portugal with cities first. Kyoto goes to settler factory duty.

And sure AT and electronics with ToE. But that also takes still a bit time.

A nice start on the mainland. :goodjob:

Iron Tip should give its land tiles to other towns this IT, since we've rushed a factory there.

After the factory Iron Tip should rush a coal plant, then build the HE without further delay, since the ToE pre-build can wait.

I don't mind you take the next turnset Rat. I am up in SGOTM6 now and will probably have a difficult time trying to play both turn sets over the next couple of days. Playing the next turnset after you is definitely something I look forward too. And, nice progress klarious!

After the factory Iron Tip should rush a coal plant, then build the HE without further delay, since the ToE pre-build can wait.
I would like to have Uni (short-rushed with bank) and hospital (short-rush collosseum), before HE. After hospital the city should be pumped up to work all it's water tiles.

When I say short-rushed with, I mean to do a rush to worker from scratch (the 40gold wasted aren't really much relative to the total expense) , then rush the short-rush item. With coal plant we should have over 40spt, so these actions only take one turn.

played the first 5 turns, will continue..the game is pretty damn slow...
I posted the save so you can check out things and comment

Pre-Turn
it takes a long time to load this monster of a game
We do indeed have few troops
MM and we get electricity in 16 now

IT Portugal lands a pike next to Oporto

1.730AD
defeat the pike, land settler and get it into position
rush the coal plant, rush a cav as well as too many enemies around

IT Spain lands a conquistador
Germany + Vikings peace, then Germany declares on us

2.740AD
short rush bank via worker -> just nice for uni
defeat conquistador, found Suo...even that takes ages
do rush another cavalry, too many enemies for comfort

make peace with Byzantines, ally them against Dutch, Vikings, Spain and Iro for free
sell a few maps

attack Guimares and take it after taking out 2 muskets + 1 pike + 1 LB
it takes ages to get the city

IT Iros land 2 knights, Spain a conquistador
England lands spear

3. 750AD
defeat conquistador, steal two Portuguese workers
we have 3 units to defeat 3 enemies on Island #2, tricky as the landed units disrupted the cav build
defeat knight and cav promotes, cav defeats mace and promotes, mace goes red but defeats spear
we are good for now
swap the cav prebuild to hospital as it was short of 1shield
Kagoshima is at 20spt, rushes cav
rush hospital in Iron Tip via worker/coloseum
as Toyama grows, rush harbor there, as well as in Suo
Izumo gets hospital, Matsuyama a library

get Hittites against Iro and Vikings for 65gpt, sell them nationalism for 42gpt

IT scary moment as Portugal shows up with a knight, but it goes round Guimares...what did they :smoke:
two more LBs show up as well. we need more units

 desert ridden Sinop finishes Shakespeare, a cascade follows with Newton for France
we would like to see all wonders go

4. 760AD
pump workers into Iron Tip, electricity drops to 10 turns
defeat all 3 Portuguese units in the hopes of a MGL, not to be.
rush factory in Kagoshima, we need a 2 turn cav city
merge a few more workers

IT Spain attacks Guimares with conquistador but loses
I would like to take out Portugal so we can then defend the front properly without flip risk
we lack the units though
Vikings and Korea peace
Iro galley attacks our galleon but loses

then a lot of Civs sign peace with Portugal
we can now build BM as prebuild

5.770AD
rush court in Matsuyama
nothing much else, leave the questions
there is still no other tech around, we get electricity in 9 turns

Questions:
- do we develop Kyoto? If so, I am going to rush library -> aqueduct etc
- I would rush the coal plant and make Kagoshima a cav pump for now, we really need more units to feel better
- what do we do with Nagoya?
- Iron Tip can get HE in 3 with slight starvation, I would do that

We need settlers for Portugal, perfect job for Kyoto.
Don't stop the worker pump at Nagoya, give the clams back. None of the big cities (Ok, New World can a bit) should grow with the big food box, but grow by worker merges.
If you think you have enough worker, ship them abroad. There isn't even the start of a tactical railnet there.
I don't think the factory in Izumo will pay off.
After electricity we will want to irrigate some tiles for even more scientists. I see only Iron Tip and Kagoshima as production centers. Later (when we are thinking in direction of space ship) maybe Kyoto.

HE fast is OK.

BTW, trade maps please. You don't have to do it every turn, like I do, but every now and then. Even if you pay now 50-60 gold for the first, you will get a profit and all maps updated.

I did not mention it, but traded maps when cash was avalaible. In fact there is quite some dough around, just that we have nothing to bait at the moment. I expect the AI to come up with a new tech anytime.
I think once electricity is around (or we got it first via our own research), we should kick off our Golden Age.

I started to ship workers already. The issue right now is that we are thin on galleons and got attacked by Iro's. That disrupted the chain from island #2 to #3.

As for productive cities, there is one that has a potential on Island #3 (can't remember the name right now).

Well, Osman asks ~50 g for his map, so you didn't buy it lately. That's what I mean, get maps from all and trade around, so our map stays accurate. We will make some gold in the brokering, but that's not the point.

Well, there's no need to ship currently, we have enough cities to fill (that was the first point). But really we need more workers. We still have to keep a pollution counter gang for Iron Tip. That madness will start soon with factory and coal plant.

Sure there may be some other decent cities. But for our New World island, I think we really restrict it to two and irrigate the rest for max scientists.

BTW, two good production cities is IME enough for all the space ship parts.

Continuation:
rush coal plant in Kagoshima, speed up HE and do more trading of WM

IT well, well, Iron tip get polluted already...there goes the HE on time

6.780AD
rush hospital in Mitaka
attack Sagres, take out 3 units, fail to take city as cav retreats, defeat 2 LB's in vicinity, army redlined...

IT quite a few trade embargoes against us
Portuguese do not attack but drop a musket in our backyard

7.790AD
defeat another 2 spears and take Sagres, which takes ages of course
redline landed musket and defeat it, no leader
ship 3 workers and a settler to the main continent

unfortunately a huge payment has just ended...too bad as income drops to 215gpt
rush uni in Matsuyama

IT Spains sends a conquistador and cavalry at Sagres and we defeat both with our cavs on defense
I want more units there as this can get ugly
Iros land 2 units on island #1

bad news as Arabs and Babylon sign against us

Oporto deposes us, but there is no unit inside

8.800AD
 take back Oporto and gain another leader
now, a second army will make things easier for us really, take out another LB there

lose my first unit of the set against the landed musket
take that and 1 MW out with 2 more cavs

leave the situation here for now to get th next player to trade (maps as well and maybe alliances etc) and rush things
The Arabs are getting annoying and we might want to have some alliances against them
Coal deal will run out next turn as well

Next player be warned: The inter turns are very slow. Spain is pretty much at the beginning of the AI set, Portugal towards the end
I am very confident that the next player can take out Portugal with 2 armies at our disposal

Electricity is due in 6 turns and I think the timing might be right for a BM prebuild for the ToE once HE is done

We also have a settler in place to grab more sea resources. Another settler is in a galleon near our capital

Too early for BM pre-build. I would change HE to academy to avoid the waste by the pollution.
Also HE slightly increases the chance to get leaders, but MA gives you the ability to rush armies, if you have the money. And it beefs up existing armies.

Could we get some orderly MM in our big cities please ;). Kagoshima could be exactly 40sh, which allows Mitaka exactly 20.

We need more workers. Many more. We probably need another worker pump on the Iberian island. And even another on the mainland. Rush some granaries.

Destroying Portugal now is Ok and necessary, but then we have to get our new land developed. And I don't want new adventures, before the rail net and ship chains allow to get everywhere in the empire within a turn.

Build some samurai. GA is Ok now or in a few turns.

Edit:
Renegotiate the coal deal already now. You then don't have to scan the interturn messages for the important one.

Could we get some orderly MM in our big cities please . Kagoshima could be exactly 40sh, which allows Mitaka exactly 20.
As long as no enemy is around, this should be ok. It was the landings that made things more complicated and why I ran more than 40spt. Now, it should be fine.

I kept 12 workers on Island #1 on purpose for cleaning goo. I would keep that amount there. We can ship more units from our capital Island over though.

We still need several workers on the home island to join in cities. And Nara could also use at least 4-5, if we find a boat.
One worker pump is just not enough. And slow building workers in new cities is also not right. The cities are still not totally corrupt. We want them to grow fast.

OK, got it. With the long absense from play I will have a thorough look at the save prior to psting a plan and playing.

klarius post #234 pretty much sums it up. I will follow it and plan on playing saturday morning. So plenty of time for additional discussion.

QSC statistics
is up. We are doing well. :D
I feared that others would have emphasized the western ocean earlier than we, but doesn't look like.
In fact not having contacts by QSC for several teams looks like bad use of suicide curraghs (or extremely bad luck).

Only Smurkz seem to have a pre-build (and quite a bit behind ours), so the others probably go for map making and settling the island.
With what we know now (only Byzantines for some brokering available for a long time), these teams will have a hard time to catch up.

Before playing a few questions:

The coal deal to renegotiate, a quick recap on it would be great.

Do we keep towns or destroy and resettle? I seem to see both methods in place at the same time.
