SGOTM 16 - U'nu'sual S'us'pec'ts

You do have to be careful though, if you mine instead of chop, when the worker stops 1 turn before completion, you MUST mine the last turn, NOT chop.

@Trys, disagree. We want the settler. If we don't chop it, the galley should be close enough for the settler to board it. We need offshore cities more thasn good cities right now, its just a happy coincidence that Sheep Island gives us both (hopefully it is indeed offshore)

Sorry - is this the settler for the sheep/fish city? I thought we were talking about the next settler. If the latter is the case, I can see that anywhere else offshore would be good with the GLH, so yes, that makes sense. (Sorry, if I am getting lost in the details.)

Alright, here's more micro. I'm going to play up until maybe turn 95, which should be right before we settle. I'm getting a little overheated and don't want to make a dumb mistake. I'll play this turnset and then we can evaluate where we are.

I'll wait for some green lights.

EDIT: I've adjusted GP farm micro on my computer to reflect Neil's latest changes

Yes its the next settler we are talking about, but it won't be produced for another 10 turns or so, by which time we will know more of the map.

If the only island we see is the 1 tile one offshore, then that is where that settler should go. Hopefully we find something a bit nicer.
edit: Offshore trade routes are just too powerful to not prioritise.

Plan is GREEN from me, just to clarify, are worker 4 and settler boarding on t92?

Okay, so I hate to be a super killjoy!! But I've been summoned by someone who's summoning I can't refuse.

Soooo, I will let you guys go over this upcoming micro. Make sure everyone is good, and I will look to play in 11 hours (9 am NYC time).

Neil: They are both boarding on turn 92 to the tile 1NW of spices.

Sorry again for this massive anti-climax. As an added bonus I'm a little tired so this should increase the chances of me not doing something stupid tomorrow.

I'm convinced you and Neil have adequately worked this out. Green from me.

Edit: Benginal: No problem, play when you are ready.

Quick question - did we agree that we would open borders with Brennus when Writing comes in and are we sending a warriors exploring his land looking for troop buildup?

Separately - I think I mentioned i will be traveling beginning this weekend. Able to check in but not play. So will pass on turnsets until first week of Nov.

Finally - green from me. Great work neal, ben, try, on all the micro.

PS - Good luck Revent on University (hope you had built your lib).

Yes, we will OB with Brennus ASAP. I think the current plan is to send Woody2 through his territory.

OK - I will adjust the schedule accordingly. Thanks for letting me know.

Yes
- OB immediately.
- Woodie 2 warrior to explore Brennus Territory.

@ Ben, you had better be having sex right about now!!!!

The rules say "Don’t play when you are too tired. Don't play when your kids or spouse are talking to you." I absolutely support waiting until you can do it right.

I have tried a lot of variants, so I am happy with the plan.

But given that I have had some time to play it to death, I think the micro for GP Farm should be modified to use the PH mines and not GL mines and coast.

Firstly, some background info:
- The first unhappy face does not eat food if a worker or settler is being produced, which means
- City pop 4 with 1 unhappy face will produce a worker/settler at exactly the same rate as the city at pop 3. The extra pop is unhappy, and does not work a tile, but since they do not eat, there is no difference.

Microing it so that GP Farm grows to 4 the same turn the library is finished means:
- worker comes out 1 turn later, (this is only because of difference in overflow hammers)
- maintenance is 0.21 gpt more, (not sure if this pushes us over the limit, but its worth mentioning)
- if we do not build a worker/settler after the first one in GP Farm, then the unhappy citizen does now eat food and the city is 2fpt worse than if the city of pop 3.
- if we do build another worker next, then there is no difference in when it gets built anyway.

It only takes 1 turn to grow to pop 4 anyway, so it effectively means that we are swapping a 1 turn sooner worker for a later growth to pop 4, but the growth to pop 4 will still happen before we have 4 happy faces, so that is no loss at all.

edit: In case none of that is clear, I favour the earlier worker.

I have some scheduling-related questions:

vra379971 - Are you still participating? You have not posted since checking in.

Deckhand - Are you OK playing after Benginal if vra379971 is not around?

Yes.

I will be out of town Fri/Sat but available on Sunday. I can absorb Benginal's turnset Thursday night/Friday morning and maybe post a rough draft PPP or list of discussion questions on Friday morning.

Spoiler :
As I like to complain: I can't access civfanatics from work.
I just have few hours in the evening for civ.

In other news, just sent my university application off! Wish me luck!! :o

If you study as well as you analyse Civ 4 data, you'll be sorted.

Just remember "Alcahol is the cause of, and solution to, all of life's little problems."

Ahh, clever! I haven't done that on purpose in ages! :)

It is when a tile is jungled that you're better off chopping before putting down, chopping a forest decreases a tile yield, while chopping a jungle increases it.

Of course if you're chopping for hammers, then chop away, as you want them sooner over later.

Edit Plan is GREEN from me too.

Excitement :band:

I love 'baba yetu', its a shame its only in vanilla, i watch it on youtube with the kids all the time

Turn 85
Ramesses requests open borders: denied.

Turn 86
Not sure if it was a bug or not. But for a split second we say Brennus researching monotheism.
Writing In.
Start on Alphabet and set slider to 0%.
SH!T/SCORE: We popped gold in the plains hill 2W1S of Paris. I'm hesitant to stop again, but this throws all happy caps out of whack.

I'm waiting for a green to continue. Or Neil, would you prefer to stop and do this micro again?

This is definitely mostly a good thing, but it's sped everything else up and messed up timings dramatically in Paris and Production. It's also going to slow the speed with which we produce chariots in Paris. We may need to switch some of that responsibility to Production (which is now working 4 superb tiles).
