SGOTM 16 - U'nu'sual S'us'pec'ts

Excellent work Benginal! :goodjob:

I would vote for you to continue for a few more turns, since you are most familiar with the current micro state. Of course if you would rather pass the save to the next player, that's fine as well.

Getting the gold in Paris is fantastic. Settling Paris south looks even better now. And forges are looking better too. :)

I agree with the plan for alternate city site on sheep island, but let's get a chariot there to scout a bit. Maybe we could find copper that would alter whether we place the first city near the fish or clams.

In production we're going to get an unhappy face very shortly which is screaming for a 2-pop whip. The logical choices are galley, barracks, or forge. Do I hear votes for any of those? Or votes not to whip?

Chris, I agree that we should land a chariot with the first wave. It might be possible to load a chariot and settler on the first boat. Then whip in a second galley very soon after to bring over a worker. That way we get the 2-pop whip we need in Production and get a second galley which will be useful for the eventual assault on barb-sheep.

We probably can make do with just the one galley, though. Comments?

I think we should do whatever expedites capturing the barb cities. I would lean toward a forge if that ends up speeding chariot production. Can we use a single galley to bridge between the PH on our continent and the sheep tile next to the barb city? Or is that too risky?

I love 'baba yetu', its a shame its only in vanilla, i watch it on youtube with the kids all the time

Under Options > Graphics, you can click on "Opening Menu" and select "CivilizationIV" to get the Vanilla menu and music.

Those forges have suddenly become a whole bunch more appealing.

Its funny really, you do all this testing and something (awesome) like this happens

Yeah... all my evil plans foiled by one RNG! I won't be wishing you "good luck" anymore... you've gotten your fair share of it already. Make the most of it!:goodjob:

Paris has trade routes with Bibracte, Vienne, and Tolosa. GP Farm has a trade route with Gergovia. Commerce only has one trade route!!!

Commerce isn't coastal, so it should only have one trade route at this point, yes?

Great job on the play Ben!! :) Anyway, that barb city might have some (good) surprises that are in the black zone. I've almost always found barb cities to be settled pretty good.

and thanks guys! I hope it's as easy as analysing Civ 4 :p Speaking of that, I sent freedom of information acts to every university I applied to asking for statistics on past data  A bit over the top, but I need to make sure I apply to my strengths :)

Wooooo!!! on the gold :D :D :D :D That can be game changing! Early higher happy cap, a significant proportion added to our commerce and an extra reason to build cheap forges everywhere! :)

Oh, I am so doing that. I much prefer the Vanilla music to BtS.

If by some miracle we win, the other teams will all point at this event.

Back to strategy discussion:
- Agreed about sending settler & chariot :) to barb island first.
- Agreed about location of said settler
- I am favouring a 2 pop whip of Barracks at Production. It should hopefully mean that instead of at least one dead Chariot, we have a heavily promoted one.
- After we get to 5 Chariots, take the barb city immediately while building a few more replacements for the ones that perish.
- One galley will be fine for now.
- Brennus Archer/Axe combo in our territory looks scary  keep a close eye on it.
- Road from Clams back to Paris. Clams will be Brennus' target if he attacks us.
- Whip the Granary in Clams into some units at pop 4.
- Forges in Paris & Prod after Chariots.

Wait, what, where is this? I didn't see that in the report writeup!

Vienne is guarded by an axe and a chariot.

The gold isn't THAT good that it'll win us the game! And be positive! We have a chance :) A good chance at that!

From those 10 objectives, a lot of them are pretty straight forward or we are already on our way to them :)

Humbaba-no matter how strong he is, at the end game, we will be on the verge of winning, even if he's on a single tile island and has every promotion in the game, is immune to seige attack or whatever, we just nuke that tile twice and he'll be gone. Easy as that.
We are going to be killing Brennus AND Ramesses so the conquer an AI is pretty much in the bag.
IW is the same.
We've already got one shrine in the bag :) (Brennus built SH and will get a GP probably..)
we're almost at 100 turns!

Be positive!!!!

Also, Brennus's ratio with Ramesses is 302/367 and with us is 278/332.

Does that say anything...?

The gold doesn't mean we will win, but if we do win the other teams will say it was luck.

There is a Brennus Axe & Archer, standing on our Gems, in our territory, 2S of Clams.

Humbaba will be Mobile Artillery

edit: and I'm not being negative, I just know the opposition

Yeah, but considering Clams doesn't have any units, its still a bit scary.

Thankfully we haven't seen any spears yet.

Once we get Alpha, we can beg Hunting from Brennus and get 10 turns guaranteed peace.

edit:
@ EP, Poor Brennus, he is being targeted by both Ramesses and us. No wonder his graph looked the way it did.

We need a settler 1E of the wheat ASAP. Let's focus our cottage building in the overlap we get on wheat city and commerce city so that when the happiness cap becomes super high, commerce will have lots of developed cottages to work.

On the bright side, it seems that we have a good bureaucracy capital site. Brennus's capital looks like it is riverside and has already built at least one cottage for us there.

I like Tolosa's position and Vienne is alright, 1SE could've been better IMO but it does the job.

Also guys, I'm becoming a bit more iffy about a space race VC. Time is of the essence, isn't it? We want to time our win so that we win as soon as we research Future Tech. If we do go down the space route, we have to research 3 extra techs for space parts AND then build them AND launch the ship. That is a long detour from FT. We have to research Ecology, Fiber Optics and Fusion which are not necessary techs for FT. Making a detour of lots of turns researching them I think is sub optimal and will cost us the first place we are aiming for. We need to aim for victories that are easily accessible from the moment we research FT. The ones that seem likely to me are conquest, culture and diplomatic/religious. So if we can time everything perfectly, we should not need to go down the Ecology to Fusion path saving us many many turns.

@neil, he is coded to place emphasis on the espionage slider so I think it may have been like that regardless :)

I am liking Paris for a beuro cap more and more. Its got Gold, great food and lots of riverside tiles (albeit plains and not grass) what more do you want?

Yes, we need to fill in some of the gaps, but the 2 best city sites we see are currently occupied by barbs. Lets get those first.

edit: Happy to not do space, domination / culture is also a good combination. Lots of Sushi resources for a late Culture surge.

I have a feeling Brennu's capital is better :p
I was just looking at the tech tree and it seemed silly that we would research 3 unnecessary techs to spend time on building parts that will delay our victory

1) The spear/axe of Brennus has been behaving exaclty as an AI scouting group usually does. They left from Celtia a few turns ago towards the coast and have been exploring northward. I thought they were going to be with the settler party, but then didn't.

2) I'm a bit busy at the moment still, but I'll post a thorough PPP sometime tonight or tomorrow. Keep up the good discussion and if anyone wants to start on a very rough draft of a PPP (aka a compilation of all the ideas already in the thread) that would be appreciated, but certainly not necessary.
