SGOTM 20 - Misfit Gypsy Nuts

Plan sounds fine to me. Just saying that building units for HR happiness doesn't make too much sense if the whole idea of attacking Peter is getting the mids and switching to rep (or PS). On the granary issue, I haven't got a really informed opinion, but never even contemplated working an inferior tile just before a granary completes until Ron mentioned it this game. It feels counter intuitive to say the least, but I'll leave it up to Sleepless here to decide. :p

Have to agree building MP's to work inferior tiles isn't generally worth it. Much better to 2 pop whip into other things and keep cities around 5 or 6 size early on. Generally that is. :)

Noted about the furs and will try and keep an eye on happiness. Still unhappy citizens can be forced into riding phants in the very near future...

Begging cash?

I know from previous SP games begging 40 generally worked if you was able. Could we risk the 50 from Cathie? I know AJ is good at working these things out.. :)

Good to have you on the active roster, Sleepless! :D

- Former Suleiman cities, I would avoid building HAs without stables. (And barracks, obviously!) We are planning enough warring, with HAs and elephants and maybe knights later on, that the stables should be worthwhile. Alternate idea would be to use those cities for our non-mounted troops: axes, catapults, archers. (Note that there are a couple cities with HA garrisons because we had nothing else available. Builds a few archers and free up those HAs.)

Good luck!

Yep that was the plan. Release some of the HA's and prioritise mounted from the stable cities.

I guess it depends on how you define "inferior tiles". For our largest cities the extra pop is all going for some form of commerce/research: cottage tiles and scientists. I like having at least some semblance of an actual economy, even if our main focus is on conquest at the moment. Our rivals are not standing still, with many of them reaching and switching to HR recently. Their cities will be expanding and producing more with their increased happy caps. It would be good for our cities to do the same.

Real quick on the granary thing. In this case growth to size 4 is dependent on tile use of course. But using an "inferior" now tile puts us 1 food head 3 turns from now.

I am not in favor of building additional mp's in general. Possibly in SL, but I haven't looked that close.

Have fun sleepless!

Edit: xpost, reaction to haph.

^ Sure, but wasn't it the idea to do that through representation thanks to the mids we'll conquer shortly? If so, I must insist that if we plan to switch out of HR in maybe 5 turns from now, more units just for happy isn't going to make much sense any more. ;)

Again, I would need to see an example to believe this. I read the linked article and worked through some numbers for comparison, and the not-work-food case never came out ahead.

We do need happiness right now, though. And the HR garrison units are not going to be useless if/when we switch to Rep -- they can be shuffled around to serve as garrison for cities captured from Peter.

Here is the test I built with the current options for tile use. Play a couple turns each way and you can see for yourself. I find it a tad insulting that you believe I would be untruthful.

More to follow.. :)

Here is the test I built with the current options for tile use. Play a couple turns each way and you can see for yourself. I find it a tad insulting that you believe I would be untruthful.

I don't think you are not telling the truth -- I apologize if you felt I was questioning you on that level. That was not my intent.

I think we are miscommunicating somewhere and are not looking at the same scenarios. So you see one thing, and I see another thing, and it is because we are not actually looking at the same thing.

What are you doing on the initial turn? I think I am probably misunderstanding your suggestion to use an inferior tile, and that is leading to the different outcomes we are seeing.

I used your granary test save and tried two scenarios. I am assuming all pop after size 2 work 1F tiles, since that is all we have available at Ghuzz right now after the wheat and seafood. (The actual value of such pop should not matter as long as we treat them the same way for the tests.)

Scenario A we work both improved food sources on the initial turn (IT + 0):

IT + 0: 10/24 food in bar; 0 stored in granary (not built yet); +8 food surplus; size 2
IT + 1: 18/24 food in bar; 0 stored in granary (just finished); +8 food surplus; size 2
IT + 2: 10/26 food in bar; 8 stored in granary; +7 food surplus; size 3
IT + 3: 17/26 food in bar; 13 stored in granary (max); + 7 food surplus; size 3

Scenario B we work one improved food source on the initial turn, and the other pop generates no food (basic citizen for 1H):

IT + 0: 10/24 food in bar; 0 stored in granary (not built yet); +3 food surplus; size 2
IT + 1: 13/24 food in bar; 0 stored in granary (just finished); back to +8 food surplus; size 2
IT + 2: 21/24 food in bar; 8 stored in granary; +8 food surplus; size 2
IT + 3: 17/26 food in bar; 13 stored in granary (max); + 7 food surplus; size 3

Note that the IT + 3 result is identical to scenario A, except that in scenario A the city grew to size 3 a turn earlier and thus got whatever value that additional pop point produced. So scenario A is superior.

Hmmm, you mention 1 additional food after three turns. What happens if we run a Scenario C where we work one improved food source on the initial turn, and the other pop works a 1F tile:

IT + 0: 10/24 food in bar; 0 stored in granary (not built yet); +4 food surplus; size 2
IT + 1: 14/24 food in bar; 0 stored in granary (just finished); back to +8 food surplus; size 2
IT + 2: 22/24 food in bar; 8 stored in granary; +8 food surplus; size 2
IT + 3: 18/26 food in bar; 13 stored in granary (max); + 7 food surplus; size 3

So we do see 1 additional food after three turns. But similar to scenario B we are growing to size 3 one turn later than in Scenario A. Is the 1 additional food worth the loss of 1 turn of that additional pop point? Note that scenario A does assume 1F produced by the pop point, so we are really comparing 1 additional food in the bar to (1 turn of pop value after 1F). Given the tiles we have at Ghuzz right now that would be either 1H1C (a riverside plains tile) or 2C (a coast tile).

That is a pretty minor difference, overall. If we had a better tile for the third pop point to work then Scenario A would come out further ahead, but I am not sure our workers could complete any improvement in time (especially with the Augustus archer threatening the area). Still, I like scenario A personally -- intentionally not using a strong tile just offends my Civ sensabilities.

So does Scenario C match what you were seeing, or am I still missing something?

Awesome work, Sleepless! :goodjob: Bit of bad luck with the defenders at Yekaterinberg, but we had some decent luck earlier. Our chariot losing to a scout was just sad, though. Although I guess the chariot started injured, so it's not quite as bad.

And we met Churchill! :D We need to contact the admins and find out about the hidden requirement. I am very curious to know just what (else) we have to do to "end the madness" and win the game.

Construction and CoL completed, very nice. :D What do we want to research next? Are any trades available? With silver, gems, and soon gold (if we can take the Smolensk site) MC and forges would be very nice. Calendar offers value for improving bananas and incense tiles. Maybe other?

Too many numbers.
Please play around with this test.

Some Screenies...

Spoiler :

Seemed a pretty basic turnset. RNG could have been a bit better but nothing really to worry about.

Found Churchill or rather he found us. The English must be West of the Romans I would guess.

Managed to tech both CoL and construction so whipping a few courthouses should help our economy. Not sure where to go from here but I believe vassals is on so perhaps chain capitulating to a conquest victory would be the fastest. I do need to read up a bit more on the extra winning requirements..

Begged 50 gold from Cathie. Louis can be begged from atm. Note if we change to caste/rep for faster teching we will lose the opportunity to beg from Louis.

Early peace with Augustus. Killed off one of his archers he had floating around and he gave us 65 gold for the pleasure so no real concerns there. He did demand priesthood which I gave as there was no real downside not to.

War.. I fancy carrying on the war to Cathie next. Relieve a bit of pressure from her plus she seems pretty weak. Perhaps whipping a spy from somewhere to see if we can steal aesthetics wouldn't be a bad idea either.

World Wonders.. We have stone next turn so perhaps a run at the Hanging Gardens in a city would be a cheap build for the extra pop?

Couple of units still to be moved South of Yekat and pile a few more troops in Rostov as its under pressure from Cathie and does have the Mids so we don't want to lose that one..

Smolensk site has already been settled by Louis. From what I've seen he is very weak so a quick attack on Cathie then back for him seems best to me.. :)

OK can't win by conquest and I'm guessing the madness is between the opposing civs but how were meant to stop that?? Plus side I'll message AlanH/BSPollux that we've met all the civs.

Edit.. PM sent

Ronnie1, I am not sure what I am supposed to see in the saves? There is the 1 food difference, but looking at the starting save I still see the work-both-food scenario getting the growth to size 3 a turn sooner. This matches the tests I ran before, so I am do not see anything different.

Sleepless, both Catherine and Louis are a problem due to cultural pressure. :( But Catherine has no real room to expand, while Louis has been planting a lot of cities. Catherine also has horse archers while Louis does not. I think Louis is the better target, so we can claim more land and cities against weaker opposition. Also, with Catherine knowing Aesthetics I think she is more likely to build additional wonders for us. :D But I am fine with either as the next target.

Hanging Gardens is an interesting possibility, especially since we have a couple hammams built. The AI often does not build aquaducts for a while, so once the stone is online we might want to give the wonder a shot.

Building a spy and sending it to steal Aesthetics from Catherine also sounds good to me. I am not a big user of espionage so I am not very familiar with how much such missions cost, but it would be good to get something for all our EP.

When do we want to go after a barb holy city? We are going to need a lot of religous spread and temples built, so getting a source of religion so we can start getting free spreads would be nice. Even with a holy city free spreads take time. We could also benefit from religious civics, and maybe from +diplo once the religion spreads to neighbors. Of course, fighting those neighbors would then give unhappiness....

Also, what about Suleiman? We should finish him off at some point to remove the "yearn to join the motherland" unhappiness from some of our cities. Not sure when the best time would be, but now that we can build some cats and elephants stomping his one city should not be too difficult.

Another thought: once the stone is online we can build Moai cheaply. Do we want to put it in MA? Or do we have other national wonders we would rather put there, such as National Epic to go with all the food? We need to think about where we want to put our national wonders.
