SGOTM 22 - Fifth Element

We should wait for judaism spread, but not necessairy convert until we have enough improved tiles to work or Organised religion ready to adopt. I noticed that AIs stop spreading religion when someone converts and then send missionairies to next AI. If we can wait with no cost for "free" spreads from Darius, it may save us some hammers. Let us convert when we really must

We may well be asked to convert, worth waiting for as it gives additional diplo bonus.

Our third city (Equus) has been founded. See 975bc save. I've PMed BSPollux and AlanH to inform them of the same. Equus starting on monument.

Judaism has spread to Rome, we haven't converted.

We'll be skint next turn (0 gold in bank) but agric will be in.

No new barbs. Time to move archers out of Rome.

what next?

Yeah, let's move this thing along.

I think the very next thing to do is whip the library. I would have said we need Monarchy before going for a fourth city, but if we convert to Judaism, we could pull it off. Just need to figure out how long it will take and where to put the city.

"Where" is easy - gold or silver spot further east

Played a couple more turns up to end of T78 (aka 925bc).

T76 (remainder)
Workers complete road to Equus. Archers move out from Rome.

T77.
Agric is in. 0 gold. 100% cash.
Porcy archer>gran.
No new barbs.
Workers start chopping monument for Equus.

T78.
Buddhism spreads to Porcy! Free culture.
New barb 2n of Equus.
Workers finish chop, 1 starts farming corn.
Euus completes monument next turn.

Which religion (if any)?
Rome can double whip library.
The economy is a mess unsurprisingly, unit maintenance and little commerce.
Our economy is a mess. Paying ?5gpt unit maintenance.
Where to locate archers?

So, I played another test to get a 4th city. I came to the conclusion that we can't really settle out east before we finish Monarchy. They just come in around the same time. The upshot of that is that there's no compelling reason to adopt a religion yet. Probably not until we can research Mono and run Org Rel.

We're breaking even around 60% research, so I don't think we're in bad shape yet. Still, we should start working at least one cottage in both Rome and Porcy.

Archer locations look good to me. It's going to be more difficult to pull 8 units back into Rome with them spread so far, but if we build 3 chariots it should be fine.

Test Game at T78 is attached. It's definitely not a perfect match, but should be good enough for the "big picture" over the next 25 turns. Oh, and don't be afraid to use Worldbuilder to delete some barbs; they still seem to be much worse in the test.

Bit of a plan.

Rome whips library now, then runs 2 scientists working commerce tiles while slow building another archer.

Porcy starts library now, works pigs and mines while growing to pop4 then whips library, regrows then runs 2 scientists while working commerce tiles.

Equus starts archer after monument working food while growing.

Rome worker starts cottages between Rome and Porcy. Equus workers build farm, then road corn, 1 worker starts on ghmine while other roads east towards archers.

Obviously want to road horses just before border pop then pasture asap.

Research PH>monarchy, keep binary research for the moment.

Jewish missionary may head north and if it survives likely to convert Hannibal (unless Hindu civs are closer to him), I won't adopt religion unless asked to do so, bit tricky if Saladin gets in first coz we lose turns switching in and out of religions.

Only thing I would add is that if Rome is going to grow into unhappiness, we should switch to Settler until the whip anger is gone. Not sure if that will be a problem while working 2 sci.

Also, can someone do screenshots of potential city sites again? The ones out east don't look that stellar to me.

I think it is good. Not sure about settler, as the next xity will ruin us for sure unless weak settling for deer and gems

Ended up playing a bunch of turns until discovery of monarchy T91 (575bc).

T78 (end) Rome whips library.

T79. Rome library>archer, will grow in 5.

T80 farm in Equus finished. Kill barb archer.

Porcy library>gran.

Discover Brennus to east, open borders with Brennus.
Porcy pops borders.

T87. Gil asks us to stop trading with Darius, refuse.
Barb axe to west of Rome.

T88. barb axe kills archer (geurilla1, forest hill etc). barb axe down to str 0.2. Move archer to discourage axe move and pillage. Equus horse roaded.

T89. barbe axe double promotion; 3.8str Combat2, kills archer. Rome defended by warrior. Whip archer in Rome!
Equus pops borders, start horse pasture.
Barb archer marauding near Equus.

T90. barb axe attacks archer in Rome and dies.
barb archer in Equus heading towards horses.
Whip chariot in Equus.
Locate Sumerian borders east of Brennus.
Brennus demands we stop trading with Zara, I refuse, he's annoyed.

T91. Chariot kills marauding archer in Equus.
Monarchy is in, no tech chosen, not yet revolted to HR.
Gallic warrior on border of Equus.
Brennus is annoyed and Has Enough on His Hands.
So we'll see what happens.

Wow, that was quite a run.

That one axe bloodied us pretty bad, but we've got chariots in the field now so we should be able to avoid that in the future.

enKage - I think we skipped you while you were away, but you might as well play the next set. I'm going to be away from computer for a week starting Saturday, so I'll try to say what I have to say in the next two days.

Its a bit quiet around here. Is anyone interested in playing this game?

I am still in game, but my problems keep me still away from my usual level of participation. Hoping midweek are finally gone and can take next set
