SGOTM 9 - Bede

It looks as though the decision of whether to fight Carthage or Mongols may be made for us :(
AI almost never sends Settlers across borders unless there is settlable (is that a word?) space on the other side.

Four things we want to accomplish (NOT necessarily in this order)
1. Move military units up to our Northern borders (both arms)
2. Get a Settler up to fill that space east of the dye field.
3. Get a couple of ships into the Great Lake to shuttle units from one arm to the other as needed.
4. Get Carthage to attack Mongols (or vice versa) rather than attacking us.

50 BC : Gifted the Ottomans into MA – got Engineering. That was too late. I was too hasty this evening and wanted to get my turns done to be able to leave for the weekend. So I read the comments when I stopped at half turn. Wouldn’t have been a problem if Turkey would have gotten feudalism, but … This strategy was new to me. I normally do not gift anybody so far behind, since I believed I would lose more by enabling this civ to trade the techs to all my other stronger opponents. But it has worked fine so far – so I apologize!

10 BC : Bede’s last settler reaches its destiny and founds Twonkys Outlook. Nice to know about one lurker we have – Hi!

Twonkys_outlook_10BC.JPG

10 AD Jesus was born (and is now 10 years old) – somewhere in a different world - they have no jews here in civ3 , haven’t they? So what is AD standing for?
Now we have 2 galleys in the mediterranean. Naval forces are building up, one further galley in the east ocean. Aarhus takes over galley production from Madville that switches back to archers.

30 AD : Spain is discovered, probably on an island NE of the Celtic lands.

Spain_discovered.JPG

50 AD : (Mind the gap!) New town Hammerfest is filling the eastmost gap in the ridge

Mind_the_gap.JPG

So, Mongols have been first on the east island; shshshshsh…….! OK, we are in any case preparing war. Second AC is heading NE to form the core of army group east (AGE)

Mongols_first.JPG

India is still not able to write – in 50 AD!

Crakie - in reserve
madviking - made us kings
crazybeard - kept the faith
Bede - made us new friends
Marc Aurel - kept the path

Nice going there, Mason. We are getting to where we need to be, I think.

I have no clue how to get India to enlightenment, short of the GreatLib gambit and wiping the other guys off the continent then letting them expand into the western reaches, at some point. I have absolutely no feel for the timing....

So I think we just keep on keeping on, put together a force to waste the Mongols and the Phonecians (Carthage). The Ottoman should be our most favored nation, at least until we can trade our overseas contacts around.

Archers, boats and Invention.

Markets get useful for happiness once you have three luxuries hooked up and once you can reduce the slider allocations so that more cash goes to the treasury rather than entertainment or science. Until you get to that point they are a greater drag on the economy than MP's in a Monarchy government. Also the population should be above 8 or so. It's another one of those situational analyses so common to this game.

Well we have 4 lux's. Ivory, Lambs, Dye's and Incense.

Here's the save. http://gotm.civfanatics.net/saves/sgotm9/Bede_SG009_AD0250_01.SAV

I'll have turn log posted later as I'm still typing it up.

Now if anyone can give me clearer instructions on how to post multiple screenshots, it would be much appreciated when I post my turn log. I'll have
2 turnlogs posted when I do it, the short turnlog and a detailed turnlog of everything I did.

@Bahz The best way is to have a separate server to which you can upload the pictures. Then you just use the IMG tags to imbed the pic. One advantage of this is that if you upload a corrected pic to your server (with the same name) the link automatically updates the pic.

Turn 0
IBT. We lost the Galley in Treachous waters. Why was it in open waters when it could have been closer to shore?

There is a big Problem and here it is.

The Indians are way behind in technology and it is a situation we must address. It would be very easy for us to cheat and give them the techs ourselves and then redeclare war, but tht is not on because it is cheating, so I have come up with a solution to that. I say that we go to the other continent and make it ours. That way we will be able to allow india to gain some ground where we once were while protecting the land so that India can become large enough to be able to research on par with the other nations. Does that sound like a good Idea? If you agree with me then we need to get the the othe Continent fast and that would mean that we would neeed o maek a beeline to navigation since it is the easiest way for us to get the the other Continent.

Also, the Celts have invention because they are building Leo's Workshop.

Turn 1.
I put the slider down one notch because we where losing too much money. Right now it will cost us one more turn more. Basically I just moved some units around. At first i did not realise the movement cost for being on the coast and sea. Inv in 11 turns

IBT. Nothing of note

Turn 2.
I am starting to build some more barracks because soon we need o start building vets instead of reg. One of my thought patterns is a two pronged assault on the other continent. The first part is to attack the coastal cities with our awesome UU, the berserk. Once we have taken the the coastal cities with the berserks, we can then use calvaries to go inland and defeat the cities that we cannot get to. I have done some micromanaging so that we can get more shields so that we can get more units and/ot wonders up and running. If have got CCC (Crazybeard's Crazy City) producing Palace as a pre build for Leo's. This has sacrificed some commerce for the moment. INV in 10

IBT. We lost another galley in treachous waters.

Turn 3. Nothing of note. Inv in 9.

A thought. Is it illegal for us to disban sities for the express purpose of giving the land to the Indians while making sure that they can grab the land while making sure tha other nations will not be able to get to ther land?

I just bolded this and enlarged it so that it is notice amounst all the writing.

IBT. Nothing

Turn 4.
Risor built a Library. I am now starting to navigate around the other continent to see where the best vantage point. INv 8

IBT. Nothing

Turn 5.
We built a building in a city but i forgot what city and what building. We have another AC. Our empire is starting to grow. Workers are making our nation great.

IBT. We lost another galley in treachous waters.

Turn 6.
We built barracks in Birka. Now we will build some archers and then Berserks. I just found the Celtic Capital.

Turn 7. We are slowly building an army to bring terror.

Turn 8. We built an archer.

Turn 9. We built a few more barracks and a few more units.

Turn 10. We built another AC. More Barracks and Archers were produced.

Turn 11. More Archers and a barrack were built.

Turn 12. We built a courthouse in Tromso. We have silks for 20 turns.. I had to give currency for it but it was worth it.

Turn 13. We are almost with Invention. This will be my last turn for tonight since I am tired. I will play the rest tomorrow.

 I have writting (editing) up something for turns 14 to 17 and some how the page when back to the main SGOTM forum loosing what I had written. Here is what i can remember.
Spain is now Building Sun Tzu's and the Celts are now building Sistines. This is making it clear to me at least that we should start to plan an invasion of the celts since they are way too strong. We also got another AC.

Turn 18. We now have enough money to upgrade one Archer.

So for 26 upgrade we need to have 3,900 gold. With leo's it will mean that we will need 1,950 gold for those upgrades. This makes Leo's a much better proposition than Sun Tzu's which is why I have now have Bedeville building Leo's and CCC building Sun Tzu's. We have our first berserk.

Turn 19. We have built an aquaduct. Some more are coming online so that we can get a greater increase in unit support.

turn 20. We have another AC. And here is the end of my turn. I will post more pictures later. I am still tired and i am a bit sick ATM. A summary of my 20 turns will occur.

As I understand the victory conditions for this scenario, evacuating cities and allowing the Indians to take them was envisiioned by the admin and permitted.

No big thing, but I think you were only supposed to do 10 turns.

There is a problem now, or lets say many of them – the Celts. Their capitol has produced 5 Great wonders now and must be awesome effective. Looking at the situation it is the civ I suspected Gyathaar would have set to win the spacerace without our intervention. Having that productive city they also build spaceship parts terribly fast so even if India could possibly get up in tech race – the Celts will outproduce them in the spacerace. Entremont needs our attention – question is - when? I agree that we have to go for navigation asap, but that is the smallest of our problems. The war on our continnet may be seen in another light with this background. If we assume that the Celts must be attacked to be weakend enough, attacking both Carthage and Mongolia will probably leave too few civs helping India’s tech development. Spain should not be touched. Also America may live on. Problem is that Entremont is half around the earth (I would also have placed it there) From the point of war logistics alone, we have to optimise the way by reaching for our farest enemy. Looking at this the Carthaginian lands seem to be more effective as the starting bridge for our operation Naval Invasion of the Celtic lands. (NICEL). So I plead for turning our armies westward and let them drive through the Carthaginian land, even if that’s worse with respect to UU and GA compared to a Mongolian war. – We want our preparation room for operation NICEL and a short way over sea for caravel chain (fewer boats)!

Easy there, mv. classical still has seven to go as he was on holiday for the first pass, and I am not going to ask him to take a pass on the last seven.

So the roster remains:

classical_hero - finishing his first round
Crakie - on deck
madviking - made us kings
crazybeard - kept the faith
Bede - made us new friends
Marc Aurel - kept the path
Bahzel - done his daring deeds, watch out for those nasty sea tiles, though!

The Celts will get there comeuppance when the time comes, probably with "zerks and cavalry landing from galleons, or even tanks and ariplanes from transports and carriers. I'm not in too much of a hurry about them as they are the only ones holding a decetn set od cards from the tech deck. everybody else is ignorant and poor. It may be that we will come down to a grind it out victory while we protect the Indians SS capabilties, but if we take everybody down too soon then India will take forever and a day past 2050 to get that last SS tech learned, since we can't help him out directly. There has to be some one left for him to buy from, or even sell to to keep his research machine humming. It is going to need a serious jumpstart, though.

Turn 10 250 AD

Moved Galley in Isabella's territory west in hopes of getting out in safe waters. no such luck.

Notes: Got some Galleys with Troops on them holding up in Fauske and Odense in case someone north of us decides to get stupid. In retrospect I should have went ahead and pissed Isabella off, not like she can do us any harm atm. The 2 galleys the inner sea near India are there to keep an eye on the Indians and Carthage. Galley near Mongol territory will hopefully find the back door to the other continent. Complete log will be attached. Let me know if the complete turn log was necessary as it took a good bit of time to type it into notepad.

@Bazh - your summary of events is just right. The detail isn't really necessary. You are telling a story, not creating an inventory, so long as the important events are described with a timeline of when they happened, you're good.

For many of the same reasons already given by Bede, I'm for making nice to the Celts until late in the Industrial Ages, I don't see much success against them with wooden ships and iron swords. Bullets, bombs, and shells are the way to go there, IMHO.

Of course, both our UUs will be obsolete by then, but we'll get plenty of milage with the Berserks against Mongols/Carthage, and maybe Spain.

Depending ont he exact situation over there, I'd like to wipe out Spain or America (preferably Spain if they are, indeed, on their own island), and then somehow orchestrate it so that India takes over that area. We can then use our Zerks to help them out by "bumping" their Palace over there. Just a thought.

@Bahz: Like Bede said (ain't I the little kissup tonight?), post #157 was more than sufficient. However, bravo on the work that went into the turnlog.
