SGOTM 9 - Bede

For the new page the obligatory roster check

So the roster remains:

Crakie - playing now
madviking - make war not love
crazybeard - kept the faith
Bede - made us new friends
Marc Aurel - kept the path
Bahzel - done his daring deeds, watch out for those nasty sea tiles, though!
classical_hero - finished his first round

I made some choices during my turns, I hope everyone agrees with them.

450 AD - check our status

I note that India has writing now, but still not MM. The Celts seem to be doing very well, but we cannot get to them before navigation.

We need to go to war as soon as possible. To finance our upgrades, I set research and luxes to 0 %, getting us 73 gpt, almost a Beserker per 2 turns when upgraded from an archer. Research on gunpowder is continued with a single scientist.

To get our economy going I make sure core cities have, or start building, aquaducts and marketplaces. We are overirrigating grassland and workers are clearing jungle while the core is not optimized. I will get some workers to mine the core.

460 AD

The Celts finish Leo's :( Switch Bedeville to Sun Tzu, Crazybeard will waste shields to build an aquaduct next turn.

I trade spices+54 gold+7gpt for invention. I could have traded luxes but this way our rep will not be ruined when the traderoute is shot (I don't see the traderoute anyway).

470 - 500 AD

Upgrade some vet archers, Beserkers move to Ivory Woods, as do some the galleys. ACs are going to Iron City. Yes, this means I picked Carthage as our first target. I build horsemen in core cities from now on, they will upgrade to knights/cavalry. Non-essential cities with barracks build beserkers.

We complete Sun Tzu in Bedeville.

510 AD

Our scouting galleys reveal that Spain has to be on an island with no land connection to the Celts. This is good! Let's see if I can get Spain to fight the Celts for us, thus slowing the Celts a bit down. I establish an embassy with Spain, but she won't fight for everything we got. Trade mono for invention+13g+9pgt.

520 - 550 AD

Some core cities still need a market or an aqua, but our economy should get going pretty soon. Troops are in place or have marching orders. I suggest to go to war next turnset. We should be able to get research going again soon, making 93 gpt right now.

The save

This, to me, is great news. It means that we can set our sights on Spain as soon as Carthage is dealt with. Getting Spain to declare on Celts sounds good on paper, but the Celts will roll right over them, probably denying us that island. Uness we can manage to get Spain and America to attack simultaneously, which I doubt.

Yep, Crakie, your decisions are OK. Let's go to war with Carthage! Pity that the Celts also got Leo's. Would have been terribly effective. But doesn't really matter. Way is clear now. It's a good time for our GA!

@crazybeard: I disagree. The AI is silly when it comes to oversea invasions. Spain has pikes and the Celts nothing better than knights. A war between those two would have potentially bought us quite some time.

I really do not like the idea of us attacking anyone from our continent. I believe that we need as many friends for India to have on this continent and remove everyone but those who are slow in the tech race, I.E, America. I believe that the two nations that we should kill are Spain and the Celts, with my preference being Celts then Spain.

@CH: We need to 'make room' for our Indian friends first. Otherwise they will never catch up. Celts and/or Spain can be dealt with after we reach navigation.

As to the civs on the "other continent" (Celts, Spain, America), nothing can be done until we have Navigation and can actually send our troops there in sufficient numbers.

As to our continent, obviously, until India starts expanding, we must not only leave them be, but protect them from the other civs. Ottomans are also protected as a Scientific Civ. So, if we are going to take anybody out (and I agree that we have to start "thinning the herd"), it has to be Carthage or Mongols. Carthage seems the larger threat, and they have access to the inland sea, which makes them a threat to India. In fact, I wouldn't be adverse to takeing that city away from Carthage, and then leaving it undefended for the Indians to capture, thus giving them access to the rest of the world.

As to the Celts rolling over the Spanish, I had forgotten how awful the AI is at invasions by sea. As to "nothing better than Knights", why does everyone constantly discount the Gallic Swordsman? I just wish we could engineer a war between Celts on one side and a Spanish-American alliance on the other.

@mv: I hope you're making a shambles of the Carthaginians. Remember, *I* have to take up the reigns after you :p

Roster check

crazybeard - CHARGE!! :ninja:
Bede - made us new friends
Marc Aurel - kept the path
Bahzel - done his daring deeds, watch out for those nasty sea tiles, though!
classical_hero - finished his first round
Crakie - got us set
madviking - made war not love, but a little mre detail in the log would help :whipped:

I have the save, and I'm about to do a preliminary check.

A little guidance please, especially on whether this is to the death, or I can accept a peace offer.

Generally if we have the horsepower on tap I wuld finish the war with the death of Carthage. I really hate leaving opponents alive when they serve no purpose and I can reach them. So press on...

We are enjoying a GA so production of troops should not be problem. Just keep building zerks and boats and sending them at the Carthaginans.

I'm going to take a day to allow the rest of the team to comment.

It looks as if we nearly have enough in the field now to take out Carthage, depending on exactly what's defending the capitol, I'll start a couple of Settlers to keep Genghis from land-grabbing. It doesn't look like he cares about the conflict one way or the other.

Speaking of Settlers, I take it we are *not* using the "raze & replace" method.

Inida is still not capable of building Galleys, so a direct route through the Inland Sea will probably take out the Carthaginian city in the SW corner.

Do we want to guard our World Map? We appear to be the only civ who knows of both continents, and I suspect we want to stay that way.

World Maps can be worth a lot of money, so keep that in mind. If nobody knows Navigation or Magnetism they are not going to come calling in any case.

DO we know Printing yet? If we do we want to sell the other continent a dinner date with India.

No one has Printing Press yet. Theology, the gateway tech for it, is only known to the Celts (of course) and Spain (!). Celts and Spain must be trading, since those two and the Mongols are the only ones who know Gunpowder. It was in checking on the price of Gunpowder that I found that the Celts will knock about 125 gold off the price if we give them our World Map. But they will throw their World Map into the deal (WM and Gunpowder for WM and 430 gold)

Yeah, I agree we should take Carthage out and start lining up to do the same with the Mongols.

For techs we may want to buy a few things since we're falling behind a bit. Another option would be to get ourselves to a point where we can research techs impopular with the AI (banking comes to mind).
