SGOTM 9 - Bede

Marc Aurel - up
Crakie - on deck
Bede - wrapped the box for our hero
classical hero - opened the box to find Pandora
crazybeard - held the ground
Bazhell - WW1 :woohoo: :goodjog:

Keep the Transport (with the Army in it) in port until the turn before you're ready to dispatch the task force. That way the Army can be dispatched to any point on the homeland continent that's it's needed. [added:] Keep in mind that every tile on both the home and Spanish continents are railed, so that verything at one point on the continent is effectively at every other point on the continent. The trick is moving between continents. Brennus and Lincoln aren't worried because they're using East Isle as a staging area.

I'm really concerned about the time element. It doesn't look like we will be able to mount a meaningful offensive for some time. We need to get all those bottom-row techs before we can move on to the MT techs, and then we need several of those techs. Osman and Lincoln can't be relied upon to help in that regard. Meanwhile, Brennus' "culture clock" is ticking, and I don't see bombing his cities as being an effective strategy right now (approx half of the Bombers I sent were shot down, and it looks like Bahz lost more like 2/3).

Right now, every one of the four active civs (ie. not counting India) is at war with two of the others, can this be a good thing?

Roster recheck

Bede - wrapped the box for our hero
classical hero - opened the box to find Pandora
crazybeard - held the ground
Bazhell - WW1 :goodjob:
Marc Aurel - hasn't been seen in these precincts for a while now and is at 36 hours and counting so I'll take it as a skip

I'm still here! But I will not be able to play before Sunday. A switch would be nice, otherwise I need to skip.

Also still there, but won't be able to play before monday. Since we swapped in the last round, Bede, I think we can swap back and you, Bede continue with the save.

I've got the time and I've got the save.

Just because I hate being left out ;)

I'm here and I can play, I just don't want to just yet

I fear the End is Nigh

Here is where we stand. Brennus is almost to the 90K culture mark and has three spaceship bits in the bin.

Queue up the Intelligence Agency in Bedeville, we need the intel and the ability to steal and do sabotage. Then spend some time realigning the citizens so I can get 4 turns to Medicine.

Not sure why we are sending tanks by transport when they can airlift so I unload and fly them to Spanish isle and load some more artillery.

Coastal artillery and some depth charge runs deal with him

1834_01.jpg

Well I thought they would but Brennus brought flak coverage and killed a bomber. Fortunately the first load of tanks survived the airlift and did not get hurt in the Celtic bomber runs.

So I blitz a MechInf and a tank and promote a tanker, then blitz the surviving tank and flak and promote another.

Then sink the fleet losing a bomber to destroyer ack-ack.

The gunnery is pretty decent, whittling the MechInfantry down to size. it leaves a couple of wounded tanks, though. It costs two tanks and three leg infantry to bring the boatload down to a single crippled Mech Inf. One tank gets promoted though for killing two MechInf. The Bradley will have to wait for the tank to finish him off.

Then like an idiot I lose half the air force trying to whittle Eboracum's jet fighters down.

1840

There is another Celtic fleet sailing to the west of Spanish isle so I hit with coastal artillery, then lose two bombers sinking a battlewagon.

A mid term report:

1846.jpg

Now 5 parts complete and a culture count over 91K. Rate of growth over
eight turns is 588cpt.

The after landing action is horrible. Brennus hits the infantry armies with every bpmber in his fleet, then takes them both down with Modern Armor. so much for the western half of the pincers on Richborough,

Then he hits the Spanish isle with Tactical Nukes!! And most of the air arm is vaporized....

1848
The Intelligence Agency finishes but the attempt to plant a spy in Entrmont fails. (1856 will be the next opportunity)

And at his very next opportunity Brennus' Modern Armor takes out the tank army.

1850
My attempt to put a spy into Delhi also failed.

The Celt rate of cultural growth has gone up by 2cpt in the last two turns dropped, the other bad news is that they started with 3 spaceship parts and now have 5.

I am stymied, stumped and baffled...Bombers are useless against jets, and armies are but snacks for the bombers and Modern Armor. I don't see any way to stop the Celt juggernaut, they will either win on culture or launch a space ship before India breaks out. We are 12-14 turns out from entering the Modern Era, and Brennus is within ten turns of a cultural victory.

Crakie - up - I'm afraid you get to preside over our demise, sorry.
classical hero - on deck - if needed
Marc Aurel - hasn't been seen in these precincts for a while now and is at 36 hours and counting so I'll take it as a skip
crazybeard - held the ground
Bazhell - WW1
Bede - hashed another landing, and won't be given another chance

Not sure if you will like it.. but did you look at the status for the other cultural victory condition?

It looks like the 20000 cultural victory will be the one that is breached first. It looks like that we will lose lkise via 20k on city cultural loss. I knew we should have gone after the Celts first.

20k Cultural loss in 1856 AD. Nothing I could do... It has been a while since I lost a monarch game ;) Time to study the other teams!

Definately looks like it was a mistake that you went after spain first instead of celts.

Sorry you lost.. to the wrong AI :)

Suddenly, the Domination Victory we were worried about a few turnsets ago doesn't look so bad. ;)

Oh well, we all did our best, I guess. When does SGOTM 10 start?

Sorry to see that, Team Bede. You gave it a good shot, but the Celts were always going to be your nemesis. Better luck in the next game :)

Nice job from everybody. I really enjoyed listening to the different analyses in the early game.

Unfortunately, Brennus got away from us when we took that little excursus through Spain. (Isabella was more fun anyway!!!)

Thanks to all for the good times.

And a special thanks to the GOTM staff for holding this all together. But especially to mad-bax for putting it together in the first place.

As I said in another thread it is time to move on to C4 so this is the last incarnation of Team Bede for this game. I'll be back for SGOTM C4, though. I've met some good people and good players in this series (way too many to mention individually), and had lots of good times.

:salute:

Sorry to see you go, Bede. I cannot run C4 yet, so I will stick around for a while longer... cannot wait until the next SGOTM!

I am in the same boat. I totally agree. It was a shame that my first foray into this was a loss.

@classical & Crakie

If you look back to SGOTM1 you will note that my first foray into the series was an embarassing conquest defeat on Regent. So stick with it and a laurel will be yours!

That laurel will be mine as soon as

a) Wacken and Klarius quit

or

b) I join team Wacken or team Klarius

;)
