SGOTM 9 Maintenance Thread

The idiots will be competing for nothing less than the spoon.
That being said, we were on route to play the full thing but don't mind if there is an alternate exit route out of enter-hitting boredom and if several teams use it.
The general opinion in Woody Woodpecker's presidential meeting room is best described as a mixture of nilpotency, acceptation of whatever happens and woodpeckers picking on wooden ustensils.

@leif: we suspect Jumbo is fueled by Gandhi's granny's bean soup. It makes for a good explosive jet propulsion.

Where can I get some?  :D

So is any team considering being satisfied by just Apollo, and will not be trying to get the elephants to space?

I think the XTeam would love to get to space. However, if the road there requires a hundred or more turns of cleaning up Nuked cities, chasing pollution and a race to hit the space bar, I think we would take Apollo and techs!

I can see the possibility that we could be at this until March or later... :coffee:
 :cringe: :hmm:

It might be of great interest if would we ever succeed and most (3 who showed up for discussion out of 5 total) CDZ team members might be willing to play it out to the end but also can stop as well. The team is apparently comfortable with any outcome.

Even though team Wacken decided to go for the space jumbo, i personally (not discussed with team) think the change is a good plan.

-India going to space will probably be a somewhat random event anyway.
-While everyone now is full of enthusiasm about the beautiful space jumbo, that enthusiasm might fade after 100 turns of nuclear war and it is good to have a way out.

OK. 'Nuf debate. I've seen no strong feelings expressed against the change of award criterion. It may disadvantage teams who are further ahead, but I think that's outweighed by the lottery and monotony of waiting for India to decide when to build the intergalactic cocktail lounge. So we'll go with the change.

So, laurels will go to the team in each competition who's India builds Apollo and learns all the space ship techs at the earliest date. And we'll award Mistfit's self-propelled Space-Dumbo to every team who succeeds in actually blasting Gandhi into space.

You may have experienced some problems uploading saves over the last 24 hours. This was due to some changes taking place as the gotm server migrates to new hardware. They exposed an upload script error that has been dormant for years. Now fixed.

Please don't feel you have to establish the precise date when India completes Apollo. As long as you keep enough of an eye on them to know that it has happened, and preferably in which city, I can extract the precise date from any save after that date.

I suggest each team lets me know by PM in case I miss the momentous event in your thread.

When you reach the end of your gme there's now a final spoiler where you can tell your story and exchange views about India's interest in space travel.

The more observant of you may have noticed that we don't have a GOTM server at the moment, and TF seems to think it could take a day or three to get it running again. He also warns of possible data loss. My last site backup was March 4th.

Please retain copies of your saves until we can process them. If you have any previous saves for the last month please don't delete them so that we can rebuild as complete an archive of the game as possible.

Sorry for the inconvenience. One day we'll look back on all this and have a good ....

Update: The server is back in business. We don't appear to have lost any data.

Hey Alan,

6 posts in a row over 2 months. Ever feel like you're talkin' to yourself?

Got to help you break it up a bit. :mischief:

Ahhh, any ideas of when SGOTM10 sign-ups might begin? :mischief: :mischief:

More mumbling to myself ....

1. Gyathaar has a new Civ3 SGOTM 10 concept almost ready to roll. We'll be starting the sign-up for that shortly. The bad news is, as I intimated in an earlier thread, it will be for C3C-only, in recognition of the likely reduction in player numbers as a result of Civ4's arrival on the scene.

Speaking of which ...

2. We're also opening the first Civ4 SGOTM for business in a few days. There's a new forum to host the competition. Those of you who want to extend your SGOTM skills to Civ4 and help to create new teams should keep a look out for further announcements.

The SGOTM 10 sign-up thread is now open for business.

We plan to start the new game on May 7th, so now's the time for you all to wrap up this marathon, which started in November 2005!

 I knew it had been going on for awhile but not that long. Our team thread was open 11/8th. We may need to drop the "M" from the title or add "(s)" to the end of it.

I've published the Results and Congratulations thread for this game. Feel free to upload any last minute saves to complete your marathons, and to publish your thoughts on the game in the final spoiler. There are still only two spoilers there.

And now back to the SGOTM 10 barbies.
