SGOTM 9 - tao

Ah, tao beat me to it. If you look at the towns suggested for capture you'll see they avoid us losing luxuries etc.

Good we now have a Forbidden Palace in the new lands, we can now develop those cities properly.

edit: at a settler/turn it doesn't take long to depopulate a city.

1798
Scroll through the towns selling off all Libs and Unis and switching most of the scientists to taxmen. Switch Linkoping to settler and move trops to provide corridor to Oslo instead of Nidaros.

1800
Take out a couple of Spanish troops to create another elite. Claer up some polution. Oooh-some units on auto move-where are they going?

1802
Indians have sent a sword towards Kalmar from Logrono; I encourage him in another direction. Deal with another Spanish unit.

IT
IA built and we need to rebuff rebels in Bj.

Sword is now just outside Oslo. Plant spy in India-sorry but I forgot before.

IT
Oslo is captured. Our MA is not happy but we tell him to calm down!

Rush Hospital in Camulodunum (should have done it last turn-sorry). Open up route to Nidaros. Take Murcia from the Spanish.

Rush FP in Cam. Remove troops around Bj now that the Indians are not at threat from Am.

Error message. I replay 1820 after loading an autosave and then save before pressing enter. I get the same error message.

I attach a save from the point where I press enter. Should I submit this or wait for help?

We are not about to win by domination or culture using data from MapStat and CAII (31 and 30 tiles short using these utilities and no culture expansions this turn). Have we lost? If we have; how?!!

I think the error is due to the missing Port of Entry in the pediaicons.txt.

Add lines in the appropriate place (it uses the lighthouse wonder splash):

1 for each Port of Entry? You may have some of these lines already, add any you don't have.

I've just tried it and it does build a Port of Entry 2 in Leptis Minor so the above should fix it.

Apologies for the automoves. it should just have been the transports that had been on ferry duty though unless there was a mismove on something.

Don't forget the pile of Settlers to populate the new-world cities now they are productive. It might be worth using some of our gold for rushes to Hospitals and stuff to keep the people happy.

As I have pressed enter to try it I attach the save at the beginning of the next turn as I suppose we should use that one rather than press enter again. I haven't done anything this turn.

Thanks, Furiey! I was worried that I had messed up.

I'll play another 5 turns or so after I've had some lunch and then someone else can take over.

I didn't want to build the extra cities due to the dom limit but I guess some can be squeezed in. Any suggestions as to locations?

You are suggestioning using the lux slider, right? If so i think that is a good idea. Should I start building some more troops as well or just leave the cities on wealth for now?

edit: just tested it and it works fine.

I was just thinking to add them to existing cities to boost population quickly, maybe save a couple if we need new cities. If it is taking too long to build Settlers to depopulate the southern cities now they are more corrupt, use Workers instead, we can add them just as well.

We have so much gold that we might as well use, there are cities that can't grow because they need hospitals, there are others that need markets. We get a bonus on Cathedrals and most of our home continent cities have them, see what is most efficient, either using the lux slider or happiness buildings so we can get the new continent cities up to size and productive.

If you think you need more troops then build some, we're currently paying 74gpt on unit maintenance.

Sorry about the lack of detail but nothing is really happening.

1822
(India has dec war on Am again.) I rush hospitals in our FP core and markets in Spanish cities. Join a couple of settlers to the new FP city.

Join some more settlers to FP ring cities.

1830
Open the doors to Linkoping but no activity from the Indians.

My 20 turns are up and we have just got an MGL.

Suggestions? Hubba is in Barcelona.

Our new 2nd core would benefit from cutural expansions but we are just over 20 tiles from domination. Do we donate a town somewhere else or just hope that India gets around to taking some of those presents that we've left them? Would they been more keen to attack if we were building Apollo ourselves?

On that note, no sign that India is building Apollo. Do we get a pop-up when it happens?

Save

Who's next?

We won't get a pop up when they start to build Apollo as it is only a small wonder. We will if they start to build a great wonder, they we can force them to cascade that build to Apollo (hopefully). We have Karakorum to beat them to it, and it may also be worth saving the leader in case they cascade to anther Wonder. We have Genetics that gives cure for cancer and longevity, we could gift this to the Americans and hope the Indians buy it (they have lots of gold) to give them 2 more Wonders to build. I don't know if this will encourage them to build a wonder or not. Probably best to wait to do this until the current wonders are taken or they will have too much to cascade to other than to apollo programme.

As for who's next, who can take it? AdrianE has had problems that may have been fixed by now, or tao perhaps, I'm busy at the moment and have visitors tomorrow.

It does seem strange looking at the screenie - a lone sword capturing a city surrounded by Modern Armour and Mechanised Infantry!

I can play some more if required, although it just felt as if I was drifting. Any critical comment will be received with grace.:) I cannot play in the early part of the coming week though. I'll wait for instructions from the boss.

I could take it tomorrow (Monday), but it would be nice if we get some more turns during the weekend by whoever is available.

I was able to play 10 turns (till 1862AD), but are too tired for a detailed report. Sorry.

Inda has tanks.

India captured Oslo, Göteborg, Kalmer; burned Linköping.

Lots of polution to clean.

I hurried excessively, since India always gets lots of cash with the cities: a pity.

Who can play next?

lurker's comment: Sorry, I haven't been able to work out what AdrianE's Mac problem is. His symptoms don't make much sense. About the only things I can suggest are:

1. Quit Civ3 and delete both Preferences files in ~/Library/Preferences/. They are called 'CivIII Preferences' and 'com.westlake.Civ3.plist'. See if that works. If not ...

2. Delete the preference files again, then reinstall Civ3 plus 1.29b2 patch plus GOTM installer from scratch.

I have a very tight window of opportunity to play after Furiey, assuming that Adrian cannot get it sorted (although I hope that Alan's suggestions are succesful). Work will be hellish over the next two days and I'm moving house on Saturday. This means that Wed/Thurs evening are possible days for me to pick up a save. After that I'm in the hands of ntl as to when my internet is reconnected. Last time I moved I remember they were very efficient but who knows this time.

In short, don't hang around if you don't get a 'got it' from me after Friday morning.

I'll make sure I get played before Wednesday evening then - I should be able to finish off Wednesday morning if needs be (I'll be off work). I hope your move goes well, I've always found NTL to be efficient too but I know everyone doesn't have the same experience. I've just got notification from them that my broadband is being increased from 2MB to 4MB in June at no extra cost - yipee!

Furiey said:

..or at least by the end of Weds (if you are able to). I can play Thursday afternoon/evening.

BTW it sounds like we have the same internet service. I'm more than happy with 2Mb but I certainly won't complain about 4Mb-when I first signed up it was only 56Kb IIRC!

Still no sign of India building Apollo Programme.

43 tiles to win by domination according to MapStat. Houston expands next turn

1862 AD (Turn 0): some more rushes, India will only capture the gold. Catch one last bit of pollution. Overfly Oslo and India has Mech Infantry.

1864 AD (Turn 1): clear pollution, kill Indian Infantry, Zzzzz

1866 AD (Turn 2): Indians have founded Madras last IBT

1868 AD (Turn 3): another Spanish Militia bites the dust and a Battleship polishes off a Spanish Galleon

1870 AD (Turn 4): Zzzzz

1872 AD (Turn 5): Indians have finally moved a Tank towards Vasteraas so sell appropriate improvements. IBT: Indians capture Vasteras and 170 gold.

1874 AD (Turn 6): Zzzzz

1876 AD (Turn 7): excitement – Spanish send 2 Infantry not one!

1878 AD (Turn 8): realise Shakespear’s theatre has not yet been built and the other Civs have researched that path so trade for the techs so we can build it first and force a cascade if India start it. Get fed up bombarding the second source of Spanish Uranium so move to take Valencia as we have sufficient territory in hand. IBT: India and America sign peace.

1880 AD (Turn 9):.Kill Indian Militia approaching cities we will not let them have. IBT: America signs an alliance with India against us.

1882 AD (Turn 10): ?

1884 AD (Turn 11): realise I have lost track of turns and it’s 1884 not 1880 as I thought – not sure where the turns are missing but they’ve not been exactly exciting. Decide to build Apollo Programme to see it that triggers the Indians to do so.

1886 AD (Turn 12): move to take out the Spanish cities on the ring while we still have access.

1888 AD (Turn 13): move next to the Spanish cities on the ring. IBT Kalmar wishes to rejoin our empire, I rebuff the rebells

1890 AD (Turn 14): 8 MLRSs fail to hit the regular Infantry in Logrono, but Modern Armour raze the city. Move in on Valladaloid. Investigate Bjoergovin which is building a Worker. IBT complete Apollo Programme.

1892 AD (Turn 15): raze Valladaloid. IBT Ghandia will accept Peace if we give him Free Artistry. I tell him where to go - Alpha Centauri please!.

1894 AD (Turn 16): Zzzz

1896 AD (Turn 17): Zzzz

1898 AD (Turn 18): Zzzz

1900 AD (Turn 19): Zzzz well I say that but there’s always pollution to clear and a Spanish Militia to kill. IBT: Goteburg tries to rejoin our empire – I rebuff the rebels.

1902 AD (Turn 20): IBT: not even any pollution to clear or Spanish to kill.

Treasury: 11384 gold, +1281 gpt, Amphibias Warfare in 33 (0%)

The Save

Sorry. I'm really behind with my packing and I'm not sure if I'll have internet connection tomorrow so I'll have to be skipped.

I'll post here when I'm reconnected at my new home. Hopefully this will be Saturday afternoon, although I've had a few problems so I'm not certain of this. I'll post again (or edit this post) when I'm back.

Sorry to do this when we're short of players but I should be back around soon. Same as last year; I'll make sure that computer is one of the first things that I unpack! :)

(I'll have to stop moving as it gets in the way of SGs!)
