Ghostwind is up. Here's the save

Little bit of fixing to do. Workers need reassigning as we need a road through the mountains before we need a mine at Maui, and the trade deals can include maps so I trade our territory map for Mao's World Map and get Alex's map as part of the Maths-Philsosphy cash deal.

No one has gotten off the island yet.

Set the research path to Construction at 90% and wake up the settler sleeping at Newark to fill the last of the heartland.

There is irrigation that needs replacing at Resiopolis.

925
A Barb horseman comes out of the mountains to the south but commits suicide against the vet warrior on the mountain.

Build Morristown in the last of our core spots and start a catapault.

Not much doing for the rest of the round. Started a granary in Washington to power growth and got the mines dug around Resiopolis. There are three workers ready to drive the Eisenhower tunnel. Once that is done move them back to hook up the Dyes, we need the luxury.

Maui is building a settler towards its eventaul resettlement.

Trenton and Resiopolis will finish cats on the IT. Head 'em north. Washington will finish its granary in two. After the next turn put the citizens back into a high food configuration so that growth will come shortly after.

When a town grows always place the new citizen to get food and gold before shields. Growth and cash are our friends.

We have the FP available to us, and right now Newark is the logical candididate, but it needs to put out troops.

Road, but don't cut the forests at Newark as we will need the shields. Irrigate the plains at Morristown and Atlantic City before mining the regular grass, food and shield output is the same and it requires fewer worker turns.

The Chinese have a galley in the water so keep checking for maps and contacts. Check every turn!!!!! And buy one or the other as it makes monetary sense.

Hey! Another Jersey town. Nice. :)

It looks like China did in fact get off the island. They have a city on the little island just off the east coast.

I've been away for a few days and it looks like I got back right in time. I'll read all the posts I've missed and check in tomorrow afternoon before I take my turn.

Edit: Well, it seems like I missed a turn. I want to apologize to everyone for not being able to inform you all that I couldn't be here for a few days. Hopefully that won't happen again, but I am a truck driver (thus the 'chicken hauler' thing by my name) and occasionally I am in parts of the country where I do not have access to wifi. This is very rare though. I apologize in advance if it happens again, but really it only does every couple of months. I will be stuck in a motel room from Monday to Wednesday next week while I get truck upgrades/repairs. I am fairly sure they have internet access there (most chain motels like Best Western do these days, don't they?), but it is possible they don't.

Ok, on with the game. After reading back I had a fairly good grasp of what people are thinking, so I went ahead with my turns. However, I stopped at the end of turn 8 to discuss a couple of things with everyone.

Things aren't going particularly to my liking. I will go ahead and post my log for the 8 turns and then ask the question that needs to be asked after that.

After looking over the situation, I decided all was in order and went on to my first turn.

IBT: Greeks build Colossus, begin build on Mausoleum. The order of wealth in the world, from greatest to least, is as follows: Japan, USA, Vikings, English, Romans, Greeks, Chinese.

TURN 1: Began work on the tunnel. Trenton and Resiopolis build Cats and get set to build more. I considered building rax in both, but the two cities with them already could be pushing out archers while the smaller ones built cats, so I stuck with that. Cats and archers built will be sent to Maui for some R&R before the hard work to come. We chit chat with China and Greece but nothing comes of it.

TURN 2: WA build granary, then starts producing archers. The local citizens have been tasked with bringing in as much food and gold as possible for the upcoming conflagration. Philly builds a cat and switchers to worker. We plan to send 3 workers (once they are done with their present tasks) to build a road through the mountains to the gems in the southern end of our lands. Once there, they will colonize. Other Workers are irrigating plains near Morristown(?) and a couple of other places, but other than that, all seems peaceful. We speak to the Chinese and swap world maps. We discover that the Chinese have built a town on the island east of Maui and also crossed the water and built a settlement on the continent east of Washington. We decide to see if Greece has done the same. They want 12 gold on top of swapping world maps, so we haggle a little and bring them down to 10. Unfortunately, there isn't much to show from the deal. The Greeks haven't left the continent yet.

TURN 3: At the beginning of the turn we discover, to our surprise, that we have contacts with both England and Rome. The Chinese and/or Greeks must have sold contact with us for gold and/or techs. Indeed, we find they have. Suddenly, we are behind in tech significantly. Construction has dropped to 5 turns until discovery. The Chinese and Greeks don't seem all that much better, but the Romans and English have several techs that we don't. They also have contact with the Japanese, for which they will not trade under any circumstances. We also cannot buy world maps from them either. We are forced to trade our World Map for the English Territory Map AND we have to toss in 28 gold (after haggle). The Romans charge 32 for the same deal. Nobody will sell any techs, any world maps, or communication with Japan at any cost. Stingy folks, I say.

Turn 4: Earlier, we had sent a warrior into the mountains south of Philly to deal with a barb camp. He attacks it now, taking it in a hard fought battle. The warrior becomes elite.
Either this turn or the next one, I can't recall, the workers finish the tunnel and head over to Maui to connect the dyes. Other workers are roading the forests near Newark, and a couple are still irrigating and roading near Mo town.

Turn 5: Workers begin connecting dyes. Other workers busy building a tunnel to gems. Other than workers doing their jobs, everything seems peaceful.

Turn 6: Same as turn 5

IBT: Japan builds TOA. Greece and China have signed a military alliance against Rome. Before we begin turn 7, we discover that all other civs Have 4 more techs than we do: Map Making, HB Riding, Polytheism, and Construction, except China, which lacks Construction and one other I think.

Turn 7: Barb camp NW of Newark discovered. Archers from Maui and Newark take out a roaming barb and the camp. One of them is redlined, the other becomes elite. We discover, now that we are 1 turn from Construction and research has been dropped so we make 19 gold this turn, that we can buy contact with the Japs for 107 gold, 3 GPT, and our world map. We decide this is just too large a price. If the japs have built TOA already, it is likely they have all the techs the other civs do, and we'd be no better off than before. We turn down the deal, for the moment. If we are broke, we can't build embassies to sign alliances that may produce tech in the process. We decide that once we decide what to research after Construction, we'll re-evaluate.

IBT: Rome is building Great Wall and the English are building the Great Lighthouse.

Turn 8: Set research to Republic in 24 turns at -3 gold per turn. We have 126 gold in the treasury. Washington is at pop 7, 2 from pop 8. Workers finished connecting dyes. The move west to mine the BG west of Maui. I shouldn't have sent all three to do it. My mistake. Sorry. I stop playing and save my game.

Basically I want to ask a couple of questions. I just went back and and chatted with each civ and we have 1 trade available. We can sell Construction to the Chinese for HB Riding and Poly (or was it MM sheesh, I'm tired. It's 5 AM here) and some coin. How much I don't know. They want a little more thrown in than just the tech. I am thinking perhaps 20 will do it, but some times when they say that, I can incrementally increase forever, it seems, before they accept. I was thinking a ceiling of 50 gold seemed good for a deal.

As far as the next tech researched, I am thinking Republic, but sometimes under these circumstances, I will go Literature and prebuild for the GL. What do you all think? Monarchy, maybe? Go for the army support? With a war coming soon, it seems to me to be a pretty important decision.

Ok, I'm beat. Had a rough day. There may be some minor errors in my log. I short handed some things but didn't want to get all specific. I don't have all that much time. Odd that this post got so long then, eh?

Anyhow, when I get up I'll have a look at what you all have to say. I'll then finish my turn and hand off the save and get back on the road for another day.

Once again, sorry for missing my turn without notice. I didn't anticipate it.

-Ghostwind

Edit again: Ok, I am so tired I can't sleep. Strange thing. I decided to go back and just do the deal with the Chinese so things would be a bit clearer. We got HB Riding and MM for Construction, 30 gold, and our world map. I'm gonna hit the sack.....

Hello team,

Sorry, went out after I posted my log. I guess I didn't do too good on my turn set, I hear some grumbling :(

We did not win the philo race, as you have by now, figured out. After it was done, I chose Math because I knew we were going to need cats. And, after the fact of course, I now see where I could have sent that settler I had standing around doing nothing.

On my worker assignments, the main thing I kept in my when assigning orders was to try to keep food at 5fpt, if the city had that, then I usually devote the rest of the city's land to mines for shields. Is this not the way to go, or should I try not to use such a hard and fast rule?

Sorry guys, if I performed poorly, have patience with me, I AM learning things.

:P

Ghostwind, the map you posted looks rather fuzzy. If you can get two techs from China, it's probably worth it. I'd stay on the Republic track. Monarchy is the government for when you spend a lot of time at war. We want short wars, and once Greece and China are off our landmass, we'll likely be at peace for a long time.

I like the Great Library, but in this case, I would probably pass. That requires a strong shield city, and we need those to build military.

As far as the FP goes, the corruption is so minimal in Newark you may want to think about it. My favorite spot is actually for a city-to-be-settled later 1W, 1SW of Chengdu. True, it's in the interior, but it's a river position that can work 3 BGs and 2 hills. My $.02 on that one.

so did ghostwind finish his 10 turns?? i guess im up, unless he hasnt completed?

@ 'tiger, no grumbling, jsut exercising the grumpy. :D

Rule o' thumb:
In depotism mine green and irrigate brown, except when you have four floodplains, then mine everything that doesn't flood. Irrigated grass under depotism does nothing for you. When you change governments you may want to come back and irrigate where you have mined before, but in this case we lack hills, mountains and forests to work so we going to have to stick to mining green whatever the government.

@Ghostwind, play on, stay on the Republic track. I had picked Construction and should have picked Currency :spank:, as money always makes better trade bait than bricks. Don't research literature for the Library, research it for the librairies, but we are still a ways from putting up cash eating buildings.

@juballs, GW has not submitted a save to the scores page so we are still a'waitin results, but once they are in you are up unless azzaman checks in. He was three days away from playing three days ago.

Good progress on getting to know everybody. That will help.

The military composition for our northward march should be 4-6 archers, at least as many cats and at least two spears, better three. All military should be vets. Keep 'em together, don'r chase stray units and go straight for the objective city(s).

Ok, I went ahead and finished the last two turns. When I uploaded the save, I discovered that Japan was on our contact list. This is odd, because I could swear that last night they weren't there when I saved. I must have been really tired or something. I managed to buy their world map, then I traded that map to each civ, pretty much breaking even in process. We now know the general area the Vikings live, but that's all. Nobody has a contact with them to sell, which is odd.

Turn 9: Moved workers about, sent cats and archers to maui, began clearing jungle on dyes for food and money when we road and mine. I put Newark on aqueduct and switch to shields to build it ASAP.

Turn 10: Well, switching to shields in Neward made some people there unhappy. I had forgotten about this. Sorry. Washington hits pop 8, and will be in civil unrest next turn. I set the lux slider so Newark and WA will be fine next turn. This lowers our research a bit, but oh well. Atlantic City builds rax; I switch them to spearman.

Edit: One last thing: We are now only behind one tech (Poly) that everyone has (save the Vikings probably).

I've saved the game and I will upload it to the site. I'm unsure of how to put a link to it specifically in my post, so the next player may have to go to the site.

Edit: Good thing for instructions on the submission page. Save is at the top of the post.

Here's a a little map of where the Vikings are. Their mainland is a little west and south of this island, but they are closer now.

It looks like we may or may not be first to Republic. There's 81 in the treasury, 27 turns to go at -3 gpt. The problem is we only have one more free unit, then we start paying for the extra troops.

For the SoD, I'd tweak the numbers up to about 8 archers and min 6 cats with the 3 spears. 6 and 6 works well with swords. Also plan on a settler or two to cover auto-razes. We don't want the AI gobbling up any spare land.

Azzaman333 has posted a spoiler for GOTM 46. so s/he is active. Has anyone PM'd with a reminder?

Thanks for the tip, Alan. PM on its way to 'zman.

IBT China demands territory map and 22 gold. We give it to them to keep the peace for now.

1 530BC Scout is moving towards Maui, catapults and archer moving towards Maui, one worker is on gems, his 2 assistants have moved back closer to philly.

IBT China and Japan have Republic.

2 510BC Scouts and 2 cats make their way into Maui. Gems connected, drop lux slider to 20%, raise sci slider to 70% gaining 1gpt. This cuts 2 turns off republic.

IBT Morristown grows, workers clear dyes jungle

3 490BC Workers start tunneling towards Chinese cities. Newly built archer and cat start moving towards Maui.

IBT Newark riots, without warning.

4 470BC Workers do their jobs, archers and cats move towards Maui. Slider goes back to (1.6.3)

IBT !@#$! China builds the Great Wall, triggering their golden age. Also, Rome built the Pyramids.

5 450BC No one knows the Vikings yet. The troops are coming together well in Maui. We trade world maps with everyine, making a small profit.

IBT Nothing.

6 430BC China and Japan are the only ones with Republic. The SoD is coming together quite nicely, but our army is weak compared to Rome and Japan, and average compared to everyone else.

IBT Rome, England, Greece and Japan all went MA. England still dont have Republic. Greece built the Mausolleum, bringing about their golden age. There was also a barbarian uprising near Newark.

7 410BC Lose one archer when attacking the barbs, so i stop. No cats or archers are endangered

IBT Barns start spreading and kill an archer. China learns Lit.

8 390BC We connect to China and Greece. In a bold plan i move all the troops in Maui 1W to hopefully fight off the barbs.

IBT We have 1 battle with barbs. Vet spear fortified vs conscript horse. horse wins. i hate the RNG.

9 370BC Start moving norther worker back towards Maui. I also prepare a sacrifice for the RNG gods.

IBT We dont lose any units to barbs, but rome builds Hanging Gardens, and England builds the Great Lighthouse, triggering their golden age.

10 350BC We clean our territory of barbs, and start preparing another sacrifice to the RNG gods. Hopefully they will be as kind this time as they were last time.

Barbarian Problems

 Okay. I knew we shared the island with Greece and China. But nobody mentioned the men in white! Nice little settlement they have there. Yikes. China gets the great wall - just great. At least that little wonder will look nice in an American city instead.
