SGOTM8 - Cutlery

This 1st one is a bit late, but I felt like posting the F3 anyways:

As for shield locations, I would see 3 good ones:
- Where Argos is, the shields would be awesome, but getting there and irrigating will make it much tougher to get our money's worth
- On the wines W of Sparta looks fairly ridiculous, eventually, but is it worth Beijing?

- Beijing is no one to be put aside considerations: 4 hills is good and it allows for a lot of mined tiles.

My vote for Beijing with the FP rush, otherwise build it in WK or in that place just S of the mountains.

edit: X-post, he's got 8 actually, with that insignificant but Hoplite-guarded city on the east coast, just out of Dyes' range.

OK, got it. Probably won't be able to play until Sunday, though.

On the FP: building it early is generally preferable to waiting for an optimal location. So I don't think we should postpone it until we conquer Greece. And if we build it too far from our core, it'll have less of an effect. Beijing is probably as good a place as any.

On armies: We won't be able to transport an army off of our continent, but since we might be facing superior Greek troops, an army might be helpful (maybe even a spear army to protect a stack of cats and archers/longbows). It'll also let us build the Heroic Epic and Military Academy, which might come in handy once we're in a position to start exporting the American Way to other landmasses.

More Deep Thoughts (tm) tomorrow, when I've had a chance to read the discussion more fully. Did anybody ever tell you guys you talk too much?

OK, reviewing the discussion, the plan for the immediate future seems to be:

1) Take Beijing.
2) Get peace with Mao and hopefully an overseas city or two (once the MA with Alex ends).
3) Build up for war with Greece.
4) Squeeze in as many libraries and markets as possible while doing the first 3.

Sound good to everybody?

And what's the consensus for a leader, should I happen to get one on my turns? Should we build an army, for the reasons I mentioned in my last post? Or should we go ahead and rush the FP and hope we get another one? I'm not sure which would be better.

I'm not sure the GL would be worth the effort. Once we have our continent secured and developed, our research power should be pretty good. But I do like Beorn's idea of starting a FP building (probably in the town south of the mountains) and then switching it to a wonder if we end up rishing the FP.

Sounds good to me. any MGL -> army for pounding hoplites. Try to get Tatung from Mao first & then Tientsin or whatever else he has. Tientsin doesn't have much expansion potential as Tatung has.

Beijing or WFCity would probably be best for FP pre-build.

MM, take out the Chinese settler pair too. Slaves are always nice. :)

Looks like it's 2-2 for the FP/Army debate. SW, jb ?

If the army is a must to bust Hoplites then go for it. However, I would use the first GL to rush the FP since I'm not a big fan of an army with a defense of 1.

SW left to vote. A defence-one army is indeed too short lived for our conquest aims IMO. Bad thing is we won't have iron until we've gone all the way through greece, and that makes an army forcedly made out of horsies.

As for the getting an actual leader, well we're not quite there yet. We've only got one single elite. I'll offer 10 of my finest warriors in sacrifice to the RNG gods tonight.

We could always throw a spear in there with a couple of archers. They'd move quicker.

But we can't airlift armies, not that I know.

Actually, I was thinking more of a spear army. I think we can take hoplites if we get a nice SoD of catapults and archers/horses together, but it's not going to be too long before Alex is throwing MDIs and knights at us, and it would be nice to have something better than spears to cover the stack.

But I do think rushing the FP will probably help us more. We'll figure out something to do about Alex, one way or the other.

Of course, having had all this discussion, there's no way I'm going to get a leader now. :)

I'm with the FP plan. In the long run, we're going to have a long period of building and self-research, and an early FP is going to make that a lot easier. And as earlier noted, I think Beijing is an ideal location.

I guess the FP has majority support. I was really on the fence and could have gone either way but I chose the losing side it looks like.

But MM is right now that we have 30-50 posts about a leader, we might not see one at all now. :undecide:
