Very nice work col! I'd love to hear closer analysis & a bit more of your thought process during the game if you have the time & inclination.

I'll try and annotate it when I get back - I'm off to Vancouver this weekend.

Maybe we should all fly to the UK and play Col in a simultaneous exhibition (he's got to lose a few if we all gang up on him :D).

Narz vs. Sashie'

I resigned here because if Ra2 then Rc1+ and Sashie wins my rook. Not defending the pawn is fatal though since both the a & b pawns will drop & white will eventually get a queen.

I suppose I could have played on hoping Sashie would miss the check & fork but even without that his game is superior.

Another of life's little dissapointments. :D

I had the better position out of the opening (even after letting the h-pawn drop, IMO, which was not intentional nonetheless). I thought I had some powerful queenside pawn action going & toyed for a long time with 24. Bxa6!? but it just didn't seem to hold water with black's best replies.

I wonder also whether 30. Ne4 was a good move. Even though I won the exchange I had to (or so it seemed to me) to lose it right back to stop black's advanced pawn.

I'm sure I made plenty of boners (:D) as usual but it was fun to match wits with Sashie. I'll get you next time my pretty!!

It's frustrating. I just don't seem to have the finesse that pawn-storming, piece saccin', deep calculatin' masters do. Maybe some day I'll devote a good four or five months effort to deep study (instead of just playing alot & the occasional tactics puzzle) & see if I can't come up with some masterpieces instead of could-have-beens. :undecide:

In other news at least I got elvert pretty much dead in the water in our team match game.

I also think I will be beating DVJ though he may still have drawing chances as of this post (I just played 43. ... Rg1). I think I am in the clear in this game (unlike my loss against GatoNegro). Hopefully I won't have to eat my words again! :scared:

I'm hoping for a couple of draws, and maybe a win in my games. A draw against chatacouganee would be very nice, considering the 800 point defecit I'm facing.;)

...or Stockholm! (Well, I live 200km away but I went with a city you have probably heard of.)

I'm going to be calling in Stockholm next Summer. I have lots of Swedish friends in Ostersund in the North - I did a teacher exchange there a few years ago. Its a country I like very much

Talking about trips reminds me that soon I'll be moving to an apartment in town. :D

All of my games so far have been very interesting. I am hoping even to win a few of them.:D

Here is what you can do: Learn the piece count (queen=9, rook=5, bishop=3, knight=3, pawn=1) and make sure on every move you don't lose material.

There is nothing more important you can do each move then making sure you don't lose material. When you can play most games without dropping off material we can focus on tactics. I counted three separate times in your game when you failed to do this. Can you spot them?

Moves 11, 12, 16, 17, and 18 I believe. I found 5 times where I lost material.

Moves 11, 13, 16, 20 and 23 (though the material wasn't lost until 26). Move 17 was a simple trade of material, not a loss of material. Don't be so afraid of losing material that you avoid good trades. Move 29 didn't actually win a knight, since it was really losing a king (not that you had much left to do anyway).

Move 11: correct, you allow the bishop(3) to take your rook(5) for a net loss of 2 points.
Move 12: incorrect, you recapture the bishop(3) for a net gain of 3 points on this move. The fact that you lost 5 points on the previous move cannot be helped on this move.
Move 16: correct, you take a pawn(1) allowing your knight(3) to be recaptured for a net loss of 2 points.
Move 17: incorrect, you take a pawn(1) allowing your pawn(1) to be recaptured for no change in material balance.
Move 18: incorrect, you moved your queen for no change in material balance.
You missed move 20: You took a knight(3) allowing your queen(9) to be recaptured for a net loss of 6 points.

Notice you are only looking at your half-move, not what your opponent is doing on his half-move. When you can play most of your games spotting this before you make your moves and avoid losing material you'll be surprised how many games you will win. Keep practising.

civiijkw:

Move 13: incorrect, he moved a knight for no change in material balance
Move 23: incorrect, he captured a pawn(1) for a net gain of 1 point.

Notice that this is an exercise in counting material. We do not consider tactics at this point.

Here's a game that was relatively mainstream out to Black's 10th. 11 ... c5 transposed, which game explorer followed just fine. The database game had 13 ... Qb6 protecting the pawn on e6. I think black wanted to protect g7 by castling. The shock of what followed must have been too much. :D
