Simple, do they get the +25% defensive bonus? Can they even be attacked? And what happens if a ship enters a fort which is guarded by a milatery unit? What if the fort has a worker/settler in it?

I could World Builder it to see what happens, but my computer is hot enough as it is, and I've got to do my turnset for tommorows story. So if someone else could answer these (wierd) questions, it would be helpful ALOT :D

As far as I've observed, it's just like moving a ship into a coastal city. So, no, I don't think they can be attacked in forts. If you mean a rival's fort with the other two questions, I'm pretty sure you have to have open borders to move a ship into another civ's fort. It seems like I tried with an empty fort during wartime and wasn't able to, but I don't really remember, so take that part with a grain of salt.

Just tested in the WB. You can't move a ship into even an empty fort when at war. Obviously, if you're at peace and don't have open borders, it's not an issue unless you're sending a caravel through, but since the caravel can't enter a city and the fort mimics a city in every other regard, I suspect you won't have access to the fort in that case. Ships can not attack enemy ships which are in forts, either.

I Built 3 forts across an isthmus which allowed my caravels to travel from one side of a continent ti the other in one turn. A bit like the Panama, Suez or Kiel Canals. The forts were occupied by my own troops and i haven't tried it with unoccupied forts. Either way a nice little bonus for any Civ.

If the forts are inside your borders, it doesn't matter what troops or units are in them. Occupied or unoccupied, the ships will be able to sail through. A good rule of thumb, whether the fort is in your borders or a rival's, is that it behaves just like a city.

Another note just to ward off any potential confusion: for a ship to enter a fort, that fort has to be touching a water tile. So the middle fort in your three-fort canal would have to have some kind of coast. If you had something like this:

CGGGC
CFFFC
CGGGC

where C is coast, G is grassland (or any land tile, for that matter) and F is a fort, that would not be a viable canal, since the middle fort isn't bordered by a water tile, and thus can not accept ships. It's the same way with cities, incidentally. On the other hand, the following would be a valid canal, because the middle fort has a water tile adjacent to it. Note also that the middle fort isn't technically needed to build that canal:

CGGGC
CGCGC
CFFFC

What if during war, one of your ships is parked in your fort defended by your units and the enemy kills all those land units and occupies the plot?

I am fairly certain the ship would be destroyed, just as if it were in a regular city. Submarines might be an exception.

One of the things that peeves me about forts (and cities, too) is that ships cannot be bombarded when they enter them. I mean, really, how realistic is it for a ship to be "hands off" once it enters port? I guess Pearl Harbor means nothing in Civ. :crazyeye: (At least in Civ 4; the earlier versions got it right--air bombing damage was increased for ships in port.)
