Some of us were already wondering about this symbol:

There was what seemed like a shipwreck resource icon we could safely categorize under what have you

attachment.php

Now Ed Beach just tweeted "So is there any truth to these reports of mysterious shipwrecks in Civilization VI?" with a link of the discovering of the HMS Terror remains.

Following a mechanic already used in Beyond Earth, it might be safe to assume that Civ IV will have aquatic archeological sites from previous naval battles in the game.

What do you think?

Sure the ship wreck is interesting (thanks for posting!) but the real question is... Why does Preslav have a settler?

2 possibilities.

1) captured settlers stay settlers in civvi
2) City States are really minor civilizations, not competing for the victory, but expanding very slowly (and that's why we haven't seen it yet). It would explain why they have their own icon now, if they can settle new cities.

3rd : a bug. I remember having that problem in my mod with cs making settlers.

They are not forbidden to make it in civ5 but their weight is set at 0.

I hope #2 is the right answer!

It would be cool if you could find something like the Vasa which you could put in a museum for a significant amount of tourism and culture as a great work.

I was hoping that shipwrecks could be coastal version of goody huts/ruins rather than archeological sites. Having a reason to build ships early would be cool. Also makes coastal city centres useful.

Given the time frame of the screenshot, that's unlikely, also there is a land site as well, giving the impression that they are showing both of them off together

I know canoes and rafts were built before 4000BC, but it would be rather strange to see lots of shipwrecks along the coast at the start of the game before anyone have a shipbuilding tech.

(Sure they could be generated after someone discover sailing)

Am I the only one hoping for a more robust naval/nautical/ocean resources side to the game, perhaps in a future DLC? What I've seen so far is kind of underwhelming in those areas.

I want ocean cities a la Beyond Earth: Rising Tides. Let's add the techs beyond nanotech to advanced marine structures.

I am loving the effort they are putting in the marine aspect of the game.

Shipwrecks are for sure a sort of artifacts and will come later in the game and even though I would like marine goody huts it wouldn't have much historical sense. Norway can access coastal goody huts with their ships. Also I would expect a sort of small bonus like in Civ V for discovering natural wonders (first one gets a higher bonus) and this is a sort of goody hut you will get for exploring the sea.

Also considering how luxuries work now the deep sea ocean tiles with resources (eg: wales) will be far more valuable as you will need multiple copies for wide empires.

Would love a DLC focused on economy/trade and as a consequence also on the sea resources and marine aspect in general.

Agree that late cities on the water wouldn't work in a regular game BUT strongly expect a scenario with a late start (industrial/atomic era) that goes beyond our times in which cities on water could work out very well.

This is the one point where the Call to Power games were better than the original civilization series : being able to expand under water.

But I doubt cities on water will make it to civilization 6, even in a dlc package.

Ruins don't make much sense to begin with to be honest. But having submerged ruins (ancient civilisation caught in a land slide/earthquake and swallowed by the sea) is no more implausible to me.

Submerged ruins would make sense, if you could discover them with submarines.

My only complaint about that shipwreck graphic is that the mast on the sunken ship looks to me like a Christian cross. It's a bit confusing.
