While I think the tech-trading discussion is important, I think the main focus should be to make the AI tech better in the first place. As stated in a thread for beginners, one of the best ways to start a game is to build almost only buildings like +food, +hammers and +beakers (except the occasional defensive unit, hunter, and a few gatherers), and beeline through the tech tree accordingly to key tech such as for example Hard Hammer Percussion (?) (Stone Tools Workshop) and Ritualism (Knowledge Inheritance), and then beeline a religion, or animal riding, or boat building, or just go straight to Sedentary Lifestyle. However, I think the AI focuses too much time and hammers into producing units, that do not really add that much more than protection. If that is the goal, make the Tribal Guardian better at defense, and let the AI do as humans do, build buildings, and hook up resources. I don't know if there is a pattern to AI teching, but they should plan ahead in some way, the way experienced players do. That way, they will be more competitive, and the tech trading discussion will be less important.
