Should I Go Up A Difficulty Level?

it's funny people say the step from regent to monarch is an easy one.
There are months that i have been playing on monarch and i still can't win a game on this level. I'm ok on regent i think, since on under every circumstances ( well +- :D ) i can a win the game on this level.
On monarch i'm always having problems with getting behind in techs, when to do the switch from despotism to republic. etc...

In my current game as the hittites i was thinking everything was going allright then i discovered i had no iron on my territory ( well not that big a problem i'll attack some neighbour and take over on an iron location) later on i discovered the only iron locations were located in american territory which has a large jungle border ( like 3,4 hexes wide) preventing me from using my ancient cavalry / 3 man charriot army ( Now that's a big problem  ) which means i couldn't produce knights.
On the other hand i have a load of ivory (i think 4 spots), 2 silks and 2 spices ( though 1 still needs a road).
I decided to switch to republic once i had finished my first war against Aztecs which was a kind of succesfull blitzkrieg in two parts. Then i made a break and decided to build lot of improvements in every towns i had until the discovery of military tradition. I was dreaming of a cavalry army, unfortunately no salpeter at all in my territory and even on the whole continent!!!

What should be my next step:

1) come on dude , your game is lost. Just start a new one.

2) find some cheats it works well

3) Just build an army of longbowman/spears it will work great you know

one day i'll succeed. When is the question?

Welcome to CFC, viridomaros!

1) come on dude , your game is lost. Just start a new one.

2) find some cheats it works well

3) Just build an army of longbowman/spears it will work great you know

4) buy some iron for the time being;

5) don't forget your trebs to go with those longbows and spears;

6) start a thread and post a save.

Good luck.

As I recall, jungles slow down, but don't stop ancient cavalry. So you can wait until you have a decent stack of them, and then go pound some iron out of Abe. Even better--if you get a leader out of this, you can make an ancient cavalry army, which kicks serious butt in the AA.

But it does stink when you can't use your UU because of terrain.

i just lost beacuse the iroquee won the space race
i have to start a new game now . I hope i'll have some iron and salpeter this time. Tough i feel it's more important to have luxuries than strategic ressources, am i wrong?

I have attached the sav just when i lost the game, could someone give me some advice about what to do and what to avoid in my next game.
I must say i felt overconfident when i had the whole continent in my hands, and hit modern times.

Offhand, I'd say that you didn't build enough workers, you built too many structures (like Temples and Colosseums and Hospitals). You should have also filled in your continent with more cities - as you conquered, you should have founded lots of cities in your new territory. Space 'em CxC, have a couple of citizens working food-rich tiles, and turn the extras into tax collectors or scientists - it adds quite a bit to your economy.

Finally, turn of Accelerated Production. The game plays a lot better without it.

played another game. one more loss
I decided to attack the Iroquee, i should have attacked the Mayas instead.
The Iroquee had built the Great wall. I had no iron, no horses. I had a lot of problems taking the first town. The war lasted a lot more than expected than i felt behind in techs and lost my army of 70 units in an attempt to take Chitzen Itza.

When i moved up levels I found the game far less confusing and time consuming cause you dont have nearly as many options....on the harder levels you cant just do as you please , you generally only have two or three courses of action that are any good......And I have lots more fun hanging on by my fingernails just to survive

Many new players think that accelerated production is helpful, but in reality, it helps the AI more than it helps the human. Especially at higher levels, the AI builds a unit every turn, in almost every town. Unless a wonder is being built, that is. Watch the wonders go through like crazy and the tech race go nuts. I think in Hawk 01, it added probably 50-100 turns to the game, and that was at Regent. The closest I have seen to AP in a regular game is Sid level. The unit level the AI has is insane!

i think you should go to emperor-youll have to up your game but monarchs a waste of time if you can do regent

Its worth doing, I can handle it ok, my play is up to scratch its terrain that gets me every time. You really need luxuries for Monarch and really really need them for Emperor.

I hope i'll have some iron and salpeter this time. Though i feel it's more important to have luxuries than strategic ressources, am i wrong?

Actually, I suspect strat resources are more important than lux resources, but I like your thinking. :goodjob: You shouldn't be afraid to use resourceless units. (Axes), archers, swords, longbows and maces all have the same ATT/shield ratio, so in the crudest terms they should all perform equally well as an attack force. Of course in practice, the resourceless units have drawbacks (more vulnerable to counterattack, lower chance of victory per combat means more enemy promotions and less chance to re-use your own units) which you can try to make up for by supporting them with more defensive cover and artillery.
As for luxury resources, they are handy for sure, but in several recent games I haven't been hurrying to settle on far-flung luxuries. Instead, I have just been living long-term on happiness provided by "unprovoked" dows from other civs.

I'm pretty sure Regent is a level playing field. I made the jump from chieftan to Regent not to long ago and haven't had any problems. Expansion and appeasement is key. Give in to the AI demands until you can fight back. Pick a civ with traits that fit your style, and more importantly, a UU that comes in the age in which you like to attack the AI.

I've won with France, and Germany and have games going with the Celts, and the Ottomans(both of which should be easy wins). I used France in my first Regent game, and it'is a great peaceful civ. They have the best economy in the game and their UU is one of the most dominant defensive units. However once your cities hit max production, you can start producing a huge military very quickly, and you won't have any problems coming up with the cash to upgrade it.
Germany is harder to expand with, but the Panzer is unbeatable and the scientific trait ensures that you will get Panzers before anyone gets Tanks. And once those Panzers do arrive expansion is no problem :) . Panzers also arrive after you have a great rail network, so they can capture enemy cities, your workers can lay rails up to the new city, and then you can move in more Panzers to take the next city. That extra movement point is the key.

Is Regent an "even" game with neither the player or AI receive bonus/crippled production? I'm looking forward to the tougher levels, but I want to give it a go once with a level field to better understand the mechanics at work. Thanks!

Regent is even. I hung around at Warlord for a while, played one regent, then instantly went to monarch. So far, so good in that game.
